Before: Bell enjoying a mild summer sojourn in England, takes time off for a tiff. Tonight she's on Brighton Beach in a ring set up on the hardpack sand beach just above the high tide line. Temporary bleachers in front of the boardwalk seat for nearly 10,000 with another 3-5,000 standees expected. The crowd began forming mid-afternoon for the 10PM “main event”... which is flexible since this fight will be live in the States as part of FCBA's mammoth PPV event with fights in several different cities, countries and venues.
9 of Jaye Jacobs 10 wins were by KO - she packs a wallop! Her problem? She's lost 6 of 10 by KO. So while there's no question about her power, there are questions about her chin! That's something Bell should exploit early – because at 47 years old, Cat can't risk hanging around long with a woman who has demonstrated that kind of power!
Bell's record in her most recent 17 fights is 7-10 (ALL TEN by KO!) and only 1 of her last 17 fights lasted more than 6 rounds! Even worse, Bell hasn't survived long enough to lose a decision in all that time. In fact, her most recent “loss by decision” came over four years ago (April, 2011)! Amazingly, Cat Bell is still ranked; finding herself comfortably in the “top 100” FCBA welterweights.
There have been 2 common opponents for Bell & Jacobs. Gena Lee Nolin (both lost the last time they met her); and Michelle Marsh (Jacobs beat Marsh; Bell lost - badly). The Marsh bouts are most instructive. Jacobs KOed Marsh in six four years ago (201l) but Marsh ended her brief “retirement” (Feb-July) and stopped Bell like a clock with a dead battery last month (July 31st; KO5)! Unfortunately for Marsh, her shocking upset victory was largely overshadowed by the ensuing brawl that involved not only Marsh and several of her rivals, but audience members as well!
Overall, Jacobs career hasn't been as successful as Bell's with only 10 wins to Bell's 100+ victories, but there's a 14 year age difference to keep hope alive for a Jacobs upset, and to keep punters engaged! Hovering in the background is Michelle Marsh. She lost to Jacobs four years ago, but whipped Bell a month or so ago. So while “career wins” heavily favors Bell, Jacobs isn't without opportunity here.
Jacobs wearing black lingerie (basque, panties, thigh-hi stockings and matching shoes) her hair shoulder length and loosely pulled back in a messy ponytail. Bell going with her old, tried and true, blue JAG bikini. It's a tad snug in the hips, but up top (where it counts) it fits her like a soft, Corinthian leather, glove! Blue gloves and matching shoes for 'La Gata' Grande (The Big Cat); short hair that harkens back to her former JAG hair style.
R1: Jacobs coming forward with a springy step; behind crisp jabbing; circling with smooth, gliding, strides. Bell getting spanked by the jab, backing up as Jacobs - looking like a hawk seeking prey - applies pressure. Cat finally stops retreating, plants herself in the middle of the ring, pivoting on her front (left) foot and lets the brunette British babe do most of the work in what turns out to be an even - and rather dull - opening round. Neither woman landed a telling blow, and while Jacobs was the clear aggressor, landing significantly more numerous punches while those that Bell did land seemed to arrive with greater impact. Whatever, it wasn't all that exciting for the fans but Jacobs' aggression was excuse enough for the judges to award her ten points to Bell's nine. (Jacobs close)
R2: Eezy-peezy! Wily veteran Bell never threatened although Jacobs did put up a stout fight, but neither woman seemed particularly enthused aside from about thirty seconds midway through when Bell landed a right hand and Jacobs flashed some temper; fighting back with a furious flurry that had Bell on her heels. Bell not being pushed by Jacobs other that one time; when they engaged at all - and those times were rare - it was for the most part at long range where Bell's slightly longer reach and vast experience made whatever slight difference the judges considered. (Bell close)
R3: More of the same! Not a lot of action...Bell being overly cautious... Jacobs looking tentative and unsure...ringside fans yawning and harassing beer hawkers for more product. Hard to imagine we're watching the same Jaye Jacobs who pretty much destroyed Michelle Marsh a few years back; who showed a little spunk facing the far more dangerous Gena Lee Nolin before losing; who stood in for ten hard rounds facing former BBU welter champ Sabrina Washington; and twice faced BBU Welter Champion Erika Heynitz. Tonight we're seeing none of that fire and determination against a woman who's nowhere near their class.
Less than two months ago, Michelle Marsh stretched Bell out and started one of the best televised brouhaha's in BBC boxing history! Perhaps Jacobs is finally finding her footing, because she was starting to come on late; getting to Bell's aging body and forcing the Yank to clinch time and again! Still, given Jacobs' livliest round to date, she's gotta be disheartened when the judges made another (small) deposit in Cat's account. (Bell close).
R4: Finally! Jacobs' corner in her face between rounds seems to have awakened her fighting spirit. She shows more life and more aggression in the first minute of the round than the first three rounds combined! She gets across the ring quickly and lands a right hand that stuns Bell as much for its being unexpected as the force behind it. Bell knocked back onto the ropes and ducks behind her earmuffing gloves. (Cat looked shell-shocked there for a moment, perhaps a flashback to Michelle Marsh?) Bell getting off the ropes after a spot of worry, sliding sideways, keeping her left in Jaye's face. Jacobs niftily cutting off the ring, intercepting Bell on the side ropes and tucking into her soft middle. Brunette body attack takes the starch out of Bell and sucks some of the wind from her sails. Finally the big punch power we've heard about surfaces from Jacobs and the judges reward her effort. (Jacobs close)
R5: Jacobs out fast, eager to build on her turnabout of the previous stanza, walks into a big Bell hook and her comeback is stopped in its tracks! Back and forth action for the next minute or so engages her fans who give Jaye a roar of approving encouragement whenever she shows even a hint of offense. Still, it's one step forward and one step back and Jacobs just can't sustain any offensive momentum. Whenever she's about to go on a roll, Bell lands another punch or two and Jacobs is undone! Late in the round, the busty brunette veteran goes on an offensive, hurts Jaye, gets her on the run and dominates the final forty seconds of the round - making a lasting impression on the judges. (Bell wide)
R6: Smoke & Mirrors. Jacobs knows she's behind and nods as her corner belabours the point ad nauseum between rounds. Brow furrowed with worry; face a grim visage of determination; the brave Brit brunette bounds out of her corner with fire in her eye....and gets a Bell fist in her mouth! Jacobs rocked in the opening twenty seconds, battered back into her own corner; gloves at her face, giving up the body. Against a determined veteran fighter, giving up anything - especially parts of your anatomy, is a recipe for disaster. So it is for Ms. Jacobs. Less than a minute in and Jaye's wilting like the vicar's boutonniere at an outdoor August wedding. A knee buckling left hook to the right side of her face begins the end, and when Cat turns into a smooth as glass right uppercut, it's murder she wrote! Knees buckling like the stock market, Jacobs drops to her knees, then crashes down facefirst between Cat Bell's wide-spread feet. Bell gives her a dismissive toss of the head and turns away, not bothering to look back as she heads over to her corner to get rid of her gloves. Jaye Jacobs can't beat the count and Bell wins by KO6 at 0:53 seconds of the sixth round!
After: Not a scintillating performance for Cat Bell, but at her age, and against a 'tomato can' like Jacobs, can you really blame her? Bell showed some of her former discipline - something she hasn't done much of in the last year or two, so it's the one take-away from the fight that looks good for her moving ahead.
Jacobs never really showed anything to make fans believe she's more than a journeyman or a future sparring partner for someone. When a fighter gets a chance to whip an aging, possibly over the hill, Hall of Fame fighter, she has GOT to take advantage. At the least, we'd have hoped Jacobs would show a spark of life and - if she lost - to have gone down fighting. Jaye pretty much sleep-walked thru the fight and that's not going to have her phone ringing off the hook with offers. She's didn't show anything that hundreds of other, younger, better looking, AND LESS EXPENSIVE, fighters have.
Oh well, there's always the Liverpool Mud Wrestling ring!
“I came, I saw, I conquered. That's pretty much the night in a nut shell,” Bell exclaims. “No, I'm not proud of this win; it's just one of more than a hundred on the ledger. I wish she'd pushed me a little, but maybe my resume frightened her. I am, apparently, a very daunting woman on paper,” she joked.
But Bell got serious when asked about her plans going forward. “I've been invited to spend the week with someone in the midlands,” she said mysteriously. “She suggested she may have some ideas for me that I may want to pursue. We'll talk over drinks and dinner, and after dinner drinks and perhaps a late night toddy. The woman does love her alcohol!”
When pressed Bell refused to confirm it when reporters repeated oft told rumors involving her with several high profile Brit celebs, but she offered a 'no comment' when asked if her plans included another fight, or perhaps two. Instead of an outright denial or a waffle (I will neither confirm nor deny) she merely responded, “no comment” when asked if singer Jessie J figured in her plans. Asked by a press desperate for information for, “anything you can tell us?” Cat, her eyes twinkling mischievously, appeared to, reluctantly, relent somewhat.
“Alright boys...and lady...I'll give you two names of women who have contacted me about fights. Now before you get all excited and run off at the tweeter, I haven't responded to either yet. The first is another Brit babe, Sophie Howard. She heard about me and Michelle Marsh and said she'd, “like to have a go”. The other is a big Aussie model, Robin Lawley. Last I heard she was undefeated and her people and my people both would like to make that fight in L.A., after I get home.”
