(from MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada)
CO-MAIN EVENT - UNIFIED LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE
Posted by Lookout! Boxing & Vassago on October 3, 2015, 10:23 pm
BEFORE: February 8th, 2008. Sounds pretty casual? It should unless you're a die-hard Odette Annable (nee Yustman) fan. That was when the 30 year old brunette from Los Angeles first graced the FCBA ring and eked out a close decision over Jordana Brewster. Now seven years, seven months and twenty two days later she finally finds herself with her maiden lineal title fight opportunity of her long and exciting career. The lack of proper bitter feud has prevented the pretty brunette from entering the title picture sooner, her tonight's opponent, Yvonne Strahovski seemed to prefer Foxfire Boxing's Mary Elizabeth Winstead better and when it looked like the curse would be broken late fall last year, the big breasted presence of Katy Perry barged herself in the frame and secured title opportunities against both Strahovski and Winstead herself.
But the pushover days are finally over for Odette mainly thanks to her "Astronauts Wives Club" cast alongside the very same Strahovski that seemed so keen to offer the lightweight title opportunity to everyone except the LCA brunette stalwart: "I must admit, perhaps I should have followed the Jessica Lowndes script and offend anyone on twitter and ##### up the schedule in every which way possible", Odette tells ESPN's Erin Andrews before the title showdown, "But that's not my style. I'm rather the Cassidy Freeman type, keeping my cards close to the chest. Is Mary Elizabeth Winstead a bigger draw then me? I don't think so but I've waited for Yvonne to answer the bell far too long to dwell on all those lost chances! I will get my revenge on her one day as well. And yeah, tell Katy Perry to bugger off, will ya?"
So, the wait is over but there isn't a fighter who draws more attention to FCBA right now than Yvonne Strahovski, the Australian blonde has made the lightweight title her personal toy over the last 22 months having lost only once in that period to the welterweight drop out Katy Perry in the proccess. She remains a betting favorite against Yustman whom she's beaten twice before, 2009 and 2013, albeit in close UD10 fashion each time. "Yeah, I'm due to knock Odette out!", she laughs off Erin Andrews' upset predictions: "I mean, she's a nice girl which I found out first hand on set of the Astronauts Wives but she's not exactly THAT good! One might say she's the poor man's Mary Winstead but that's a natutral thing for someone active at bantamweight early in her career. Missy Peregrym and Laura Vandervoort would be thrilled to have her as a bitter enemy but I've got bigger fishes to fry! Yet I wish her all the luck tonight since she's gonna need plenty of that!"
Yvonne Strahovski wears a red & white striped bikini set and black gloves. Long blonde hair wet and straight. Odette Yustman wears a navy blue & green floral shaped bikini and yellow gloves. Black hair tied in a sleek ponytail. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division.
Round 1: Odette's waited a long time for this opportunity and tries to impose her presence against the fearsome blonde from the start jabbing at the body and swinging over the top. However Yvonne blocks her off well and keeps her distance before responding with half-hearted looping jabs almost to check how badly does Odette want this? It's not exactly a flyweight-like trigger happy opening but Odette's really animated and she shows much diversity by slamming her punches against the ribcage and clipping the rack briefly as well; Strahovski shuts her off again with a big hook on the mouth but the single hand approach signalls a slow start for the champion who looks anything but concerned over her opponent's menacing attitude for remainder of the round.
Round 2: Yustman keeps stalking the fellow actress with more swinging strikes but she just can't land any eye-opening punch and allows Strahovski to improve her single hand accuracy by smacking the brunette's cheeks and shutting her back in mid distance again. Odette ducks for a ribcage assault and finds more success there; she's fortunate to avoid a high hooking swing though and bursts into the blonde's liver area to enforce a quick tangle. Yvonne wraps her arms around her waist and shoves her back but remains laid back on her feet and simply awaits the brunette's charge, a sign of overconfidence perhaps or just looking to tease the challenger into a counterpunching trap down the stretch. Yustman keeps showing that feisty attitude but the truth is, she hasn't hurt the champion much - if at all - and the MGM Grand audience begins to wonder how will this fight look like when Strahovski kicks into high gear?
Round 3: A preview of the Lookout! high gear nails Odette on the nose seconds into the third round as Yvonne's done with the waiting game and rips with a facial assault that roots the brunette to the spot before a hooking combo on the temples wobbles her to the side afterwards. Strahovski unloads that P4P elite status and dumps her rival into an earmuff cover followed by a quick retreat as Yustman struggles to match the intensity and precision in a close range tangle and has to yield real estate. Yvonne methodically walks her down to the corner helped by a ultra aggressive punching over the top and when Odette tries to hit back from the back foot, she gets caught by a left hand on the chin and leans against the ropes allowing the Aussie to pound her on the midsection until the bell.
Round 4: Strahovski hits full gear in the opening minute and buries the brunette under a barrage of facial punches slicing the high guard with suspicious ease and backing her into the ropes along the way. Yustman's badly outduelled here and fails to land a proper response, grazing the blonde's mitts and bouncing off her forearms while soaking up a head snapping combo that sinks her on wobbly legs for the first time tonight. It doesn't get any better later as Yvonne sticks her gloves into the brunette's midriff again and bends her forward while ripping more punches and shutting Odette off in the corner for good, she lifts her rival's head with a set of uppercuts and blasts her across the mouth for a good measure before clipping the rack and making the younger actress squeal in pain. Another ripping left/right combo finds the temples and rocks Odette to the side so the follow up jab on the nose SENDS THE CHALLENGER DOWN ON HER SIDE... That was brutally effective from Yvonne who salutes the crowd as the shocked Yustman gathers her thought on all fours.. she's up at seven but the writing is on the wall now... Yvonne embarks on a hunting attitude and reverts back to the single hand show, snapping Odette's head repeatedly and just completely shutting her off against the turnbuckle and exposing some of the reasons why the brunette wasn't given a title opportunity before.
Round 5: "Business as usual with Vonnie!", Missy pads Cassidy on the back but the redhead believes the Yustman ship hasn't sailed here just yet. However the fifth round is a duck & weave show from the brunette who's well aware that giving a knockdown away to Strahovski is a recipe for disaster and she tries to weather the looming Australian storm. Yvonne keeps stalking her and landing those single overhands; she walks her down along the ropes and there's no doubt who's the P4P #1 contender and who's fighting to survive another round. Down the stretch Strahovski ups the ante and harpoons more leather on the face, Odette's cheeks develop a visible swelling by now and the LA girl is dog slow on her feet just unable to live with the mid distance dominance from the champion, she sags badly on the ropes in the dying seconds and Yvonne signs off a commanding performance with a double uppercut combo that spins Yustman down on her stool moments later.
Round 6: Yustman looks out of armor here at half-distance but Strahovski's approach to effectively whitewash her since the third round is suddenly thwarted when a swinging approach misses the target early in the sixth and has the brunette crashing with a desperate last-ditch jabbing series on the chest. Yvonne struggles to stretch her elbows in close range for once and allows the brunette to clean out some gut but the biggest punch lands on the solar plexus and dumps the blonde on her heels where Odette can work with more space at her disposal. She rocks the champion with a clubbing left/right combo on the temples and whacks her on the mouth too to spin her back to the ropes and make Paris Hilton stop chewing her bubble gum. Yvonne scowls in anger and wants to bounce off the ropes to put the hammer down on the fellow actress but the hitherto invisible bendiness comes to the fore when Yustman needs it the most, she ducks the flying hook and blasts a mammoth uppercut on the chin THAT SENDS YVONNE DOWN ON HER BACKSIDE on the spot! What a huge hit that was and Yvonne looks rocked as she stares at her opponent's feet and needs to gather her thoughts until the count reaches eight... Cue in more Yustman jabbing; the challenger backs a woozy blonde against the turnbuckle and slams more leather on the guts as Strahovski remains in deep earmuff and after the bell the entire Lookout! camp still doesn't know what just happened here?
Round 7: Yvonne felt that punch that almost broke her jaw alright, she remains half-hearted in her approach now but it's no longer according to plan. Meanwhile Odette triggers that long missing bendy attitude and hops around the blonde delivering more single hands between the arms to slow the champion even further now that Strahovski struggles to mount a comeback and lands only a handful of punches while getting nailed on the return. The close range tangle works well for the brunette especially when she lands more hooks on the body and enforces a low cover that she overcomes with a quick switch on the aching jaw. She snaps Yvonne's head back & forth and makes the champion gurgle in pain which is a truly rare sight that leaves most of the MGM Grand stunned. Odette looked dead on her feet just a while ago but now traps the blonde in the corner and wrenches her breadbasket in fine style to sign off a shockingly one-sided round.
Round 8: Strahovski remains lethargic in her approach and Yustman has caught a second wind in her sails; she groans in her efforts to follow that knockdown with another one but after getting blocked off upstairs, she reverts into punching to the guts where she finds considerable success. Strahovski must seek a clinching respite but more piercing jabs bounce off her liver and dump her butt-in-ropes where Yustman simply refuses to back off and digs her forearm into the blonde's trachea while ripping vicious shots to the exposed breadbasket. Ref jumps in to separate the two women but Odette shows superior speed and cracks another uppercut on the jaw that slumps the blonde's head and results in more body punching that leave Strahovski out of breath and with eyes closed at the bell to maintain the LCA's revival.
Round 9: Hilton and Trachtenberg look extremely worried in stands and they rightfully should as allthough Yvonne restores some Lookout! pride by weathering the close range storm in the opening minute, she's unable to put any significant presure on the durable brunette anymore. Yustman has the highest average of rounds fought among all the lionesses and she's been knocked out just three times since joining the Bradenton stable which is why even such a great fighter like Strahovski has trouble in getting the job done but it only gets worse for the Lookout! supporters when a repeated body attack sends the champion butt-in-ropes and shuts the offence down one more time. The single hand approach is meaningless at this stage and Yustman romps to another convincing display pounding the blonde's midriff and leaving the outcome of this fight in limbo, backing up that knockdown of her own that Strahovski still hasn't fully recovered from given the evidence.
Round 10: Can you beat the reigning champion on points? You sure can but Odette gets blitzed by the blonde's desperate attack; looks like even Yvonne can't take anything for granted tonight and she aches and groans while trying to stick as much leather as possible into the brunette's guts, forget the fatigue setting in, it's all or nothing charge from the Aussie who can still retain her title but despite a heavy series she just can't thump Yustman enough failing to handle the bendy attitude that allows the challenger to only soak up a fraction of real blonde power... and Yvonne loses her balace as she goes too far forward in the herctic pursuit, gets clobbered on the face by a left/right combo and then Yustman jumps from the back foot to crash an uppercut on the jaw that sends Strahovski into a tail spin. A quick bump off enables Odette to dig more leather on her own and she cracks another left hook on the temple to slump the champion; a right handed uppercut bursts the aching jaw again AND YVONNE GOES DOWN ON HER BACKISDE amid a wild cheer from the MGM Grand audience!!! You couldn't write this up! The P4P best of the best is down and staring at Yustman's feet in disbelief as the heavy breathing brunette is on brink of the biggest upset and success of her carrer. Still, Vonnie's up at eight even looking sluggishly worn out here, she wants to have one last crack at the LCA actress but Odette shuts her off thanks to more superior footwork and even the evil spasms don't help the blonde much as she's unable to close in and save the Lookout! pride. Yustman circles away into safety for remainder of the round and jumps in the air as the clock expires sensing she's just done enough to put Strahovski away with the last knockdown... the blonde only wipes the sweat off her mouth and gives Missy Peregrym a long stare but she doesn't look convinced of yet another victory at all here... and she's correct... Comes back 95-92 for your winner through unanimous decision and NEW unified lightweight champion Odette Yustman!!!
AFTER: That's a real clanger for the Lookout! crew trying to run away with the Stable War after the somewhat upsetting Vanessa Hudgens' stoppage of Jessica Lowndes. The Lionesses come back to score the mother of all upsets themselves and depose the pound-for-pound leader Yvonne Strahovski in a gruesome and heart-breaking fashion... Odette slumps in the arms of both Cassidy Freeman and head coach Claudia Schiffer before being embraced by the outgoing champion too: "Nice going there kid, but it's not all over!", Yustman acknowledges she might have won the battle this time but she's still a long way off the blonde's overall stock but all credit to Yvonne who finds the very rarely seen gracious attitude in defeat - probably helped by the recent Astronauts Wives cast after all - before heading down to Missy and discussing what just went wrong for the Lookouts here tonight.
Erin Andrews is back with the new lightweight champion and Odette clearly didn't anticipate to upset all the odds "Yeah, I'm shocked! This is nothing like the Ice Hotel! To win my first lineal lightweight title first time of asking? Against Yvonne Strahovski of all people? I guess that will make the BWO cover after all (laughs). I have no idea about my first defence. I didn't even look at the standings to see who's hot there because I was completely focused on Vonnie. (...) No, I don't think she gave anything away on the set of The Astronauts Wives Club. Everyone knows what to expect from her anyway but the key to victory was my durability. It's really hard to outlast her in the ring but we've had three fights now and all of them went the distance. I don't think that's a coincidence! (...) What about Katy Perry? Well, what about her indeed! She shoved me away TWICE before to enter the title picture and she's not gonna get more exposure at my expense ever again! Plus I don't think she fits well at lightweight with her welterweight rack hanging around like that! I'll leave Kate Upton to punish her instead (laughs)."
Final result: Odette Yustman Def Yvonne Strahovski UD10. Stable War: Lookout! Boxing 5 Lioness Club of America 3.
