Pre-fight:
The two British babes are both looking for their first win in the ring. Surprising considering the smarts each has shown, but one will finally get her dues here this evening. Joss confident and ready, having fought earlier this year, while an honest Saffron discusses why she hasn’t fought since January 2011.

“I had trouble finding fights from day one,” Burrows explains. “The shifts just weren’t there for me. Nice of Joss to get me back in the ring, but it might take me the first round to find my feet again. I realize I’m no spring chicken these days either.”

“I’m a little more fight-ready than Saffron,” Joss smiles, “so that should work in my favour. It’s the regular girls I want to be able to compete with though, so this is just a starting place. I need to get in the ring and work myself into some form. Saffron’s tall, I’ve no doubt she can be dangerous. She’s smart, too. I’ll have to focus, but I think I can go the distance.”

Round 1:
Joss looking much more comfortable right away, stepping it up to Saffron and discombobulating her with left, right combos, popping sharp fists to temple and side of head intermittently. Saffron not confident early, mostly defending, but not doing a poor job of it. Taking some short jabs to the head, but finding a couple of her own, patiently countering when absolutely able. She’s not looking like troubling Joss at this point though.

Round 2:
Saffron a little more comfortable now, apparently over first round jitters. Still happy to play countering game with Joss, but with sharper and more frequent execution now. Joss still finds Saffron’s temple, but forced to work arms now as Saffron isn’t giving up much. Saffron slips a sly hook to Joss’s ribs to close out the round, giving each something to think about heading into the third.

Round 3:
Saffron clearly has found her feet now, wading in right out of the corner and faking the jab to shovel underhooks into Joss’s fit tummy. British songbird bunched up over Saffron’s fists and it slows her for a lot of the round. Saffron happy to step back and counter when Joss tries for a reply. Stone takes more midriff punishment before wising up and finding the jab to Saffron’s chin, keeping her humble as the round ends. Joss huffing her way to the corner, holding her abs, wincing.

Round 4:
Joss not interested in taking more punishment to the torso, copies Saffron’s clever jab fake before ripping heavy uppercut between guard, taking most of Burrows’ chin, staggering her instantly. Saffron seemingly unable to clear her head the rest of the round, giving only the occasional soft jab to Joss’s arms and body while Joss continues to pick the taller woman apart, alternating breadbasket and head almost mechanically. Saffron glassy-eyed as she wobbles into her corner, Joss has clearly taken charge now.

Round 5:
Saffron wanting the fake but Joss is quicker and just launches into her with confidence now. Saffron battered with rights to her temple for some two minutes until her brain and legs can’t communicate so well and she wobbles to her butt on the canvas. Saffron with nothing left in the tank, clearly ready for a nap and doesn’t make the count. KO5, Joss Stone!

Post-fight:
First win of her career for Joss Stone and a well-deserved one. Saffron still hunting for her first taste of success, but unfortunately may have to wait until she scores another opportunity. She showed smarts, but Joss showed again that she knows how to box. Finally things come together for the songstress and she translates skill into success. Surely more to come in the near future for the lovely, leggy Brit.

Joss Stone a happy camper, but only with praise for her countrywoman. “I thought she had me in the third. She’s smart, and I was worried she’d worked me out. My guts are still churning. Luckily, I’m a little clever myself. Could have been disastrous.”

Saffron Burrows with little energy to talk, offered a quick sum-up. “She’s sturdy enough to endure whatever you want in the first few rounds and smart enough to learn and use it against you from the fourth. She’s dangerous.”
