Before: "I've always said that when I became champ, Claire Danes would be my first defence," grins Mish in pre-fight. "There's nobody I'd rather take the carrot away from than Claire. Yeah, the money's great, but the reward for me is going to be the look on Danes' face when I turn her back AGAIN!" One of the more competitive rivalries in boxing, styles meshing perfectly, with busy Mish able to make work on Danes at times, slick Claire able to create openings and keep her aggressive foe off balance at others. Turning point in previous meetings has been Mish's power - question is, what's Danes done to minimize that factor, can she control the champ long enough to snag gold? Mish in bra style black bikini, white lace trim, white gloves, Claire in classic black bikini, black gloves.

During R1: Mish with a leaping head lock, roughing Claire up early, bodies pile into ropes in free-for-all early action. Danes getting fouled up - Williams holding her in place with a choking left around the throat, punching free right hands square to the back as the ref gets involved. Mish licking her lips with a grin, Claire arching stiff, grimacing - it's going to be that kind of fight. Williams on after the break, overhand rights, whalloping lefts, then coming in hard with her head to Danes' mouth. Claire bullied to the ropes, wrapping up around her girl's neck, takes a two-fisted thumping to her flat tummy as Williams wails away. Constant stream of breaks and warnings from ref to Mish - Williams eager to climb back on and maul as Claire looks harried at the ropes. Down the stretch, paydirt - Williams pushing and working up underneath to Danes' midsection, comes off the body with a harsh right uppercut - Claire takes a stunned seat in the ropes. Free face-spanking for Mish as she gets happy - slugging Dane's dazed mug as challenger faces dopily into punches at the bell. Camera pans to Eliza Dushku in the front row - grinning, shaking her head.

R2: Danes showing stern resilience, finds her game this round. Williams knows she has to be busy, but she forgets discipline this round, swinging too wide, getting off balance - Danes tucking her chin behind that left shoulder, dragging that front foot, pivoting low and to the left starts to slip and slap her way back into this fight. Mish unable to pile on - Danes gets her breath back, getting her rhythm.

R3: Mish tightening up, more effective this round, keeping the work rate very, very high. Williams throwing away punches just to keep Danes defensive - Mish connect percentage low, but she's the clear aggressor. Combinations, double left hooks, a flicking backhand jab - Williams keeps Claire weaving and turning - Danes not getting off and taking enough tough shots against her ribs to lose a close third.

R4: Pendulum swings the other way. Danes locked in now, pivoting around Mish' right shoulder, stroking in that hook behind the elbow, getting the sneaky straight right hand on the mouth - accuracy and unpredictability of the punches makes up for their lack of pop. Williams continually straightened up or pre-empted, flustered by Danes pesky flutter-jab - Mish doing a lot of unproductive chasing this round.

R5: Claire putting punches together, stepping in, rolling 3 and 4 licking shots up against Mish' guard, then pivoting to the side - Williams blocking, stalking, not getting off. Midway through, Mish punches with, eats a right to give one and DANES' KNEES BUCKLE! Claire clattering back on her heels in shock - Williams hopping forward with a grin at the sight of hurt. Mish squaring away, letting her hands go - ignoring the head as Danes bends at the waist and slips punches, but OH, the body! Williams RIPPING it up downstairs, working up underneath, clobbering down onto the back, pushing and shouldering Danes into the ropes, holding her for brutal right hands to trunks and tummy. Claire beaten sick by the onslaught and Mish doesn't let up at the bell. Feverish two fisted beating continues with Claire stupified at the ropes - Mish dug in, working the belly until the ref pulls her off. Williams with hands high, beaming - Claire looking shopworn through 5.

R6: Danes with a beautiful series of slidesteps back, walks Mish into three consecutive straight right hand counters on the mouth and WILLIAMS IS SHOOK UP! Mish just taking flush, finally going wobbly butt, stepping back to regroup. Danes goes to work with her snick-snack body attack, stroking either fist in behind the elbows, pivoting, then slapping Mish upside the head. Williams with her hands up high, but leaning back on her right foot - she's waiting for openings rather than creating them and Danes is lathering away for points. Claire keeping it on - jabbing for position, rolling in loose-limbed 5 and 6 punch bursts to score once or twice, always escaping the receipt. Down the stretch, Danes doubles up a straight right hand lead, poking Mish onto her heels - Claire leaves her feet to pull a hook onto Williams' chin and champ is staggered again! Mish wide eyed, lock legged, faces into the blows as Claire helps herself with a shoeshining burst on the mouth at the bell. Danes' turn to beat her chest and gloat - bloodies Mish' nose, sends her to her corner spanked.

R7: Mish looking to get back to 'fighting the boxer', but Claire too sharp this round. Danes never better defensively - she nibbles the jab just to screw up Mish' timing, then pivots around that lead foot - Williams poking and swinging punches, routinely missing 3 and 4 at a time, or glancing harmlessly off Claire's turned shoulders. Danes so comfortable in there - she starts sidestepping with a hand-push at Williams' elbow, she'll stand up and punch a brazen left hand to the belly, then calmly lean out onto her back foot to make Mish miss - Williams really made to look amaturish this round. Final minute - Claire does just enough offensively to steal the round - snick-snack across the tummy, cuffing hook on the ear, smile, saunter away at the bell. Not everyone's cup of tea, but probably the best boxing of Claire's career gives her the lead and first back to back round of this fight.

R8: Claire right in front of Mish, grinning, knows the champ's tentative from missing so much. Danes stamping lead right hands, just plunking 'em in, stepping back, walking Mish forward. Williams finally swinging away from frustration - Claire easily reading, slipping away low, coming up at a sharp angle to molest from the side. Midway through, Danes taking a walk, steps right, steps left, stuns Mish a sneaky lead left uppercut, looks like she's circling right to escape, then bends in a crashing right overhand to the eye that has Williams stunned, covering up. ALL Claire Danes as she suddenly turns offensive, licking punches in rolling arcs from underneath, taking in Michelle's belly, guard and head as champion's tight defence breaks down. Williams flustered, trudging forward, starts walking into those jamming straight right hands - Claire's timing making them effective power shots as Mish starts to stutter-step. At the bell, Danes chests up on a woozy Mish Williams, forces hard eye contact: Claire the boss through 8.

R9: Mish Williams unpacks the jab - picking Claire up as Danes continues her offensive minded ways. Danes coming forward now, trying to find right hands, exchange of crosses staggers Claire - Williams pounces. Mish thick in the midriff with a swinging left, doubles Claire up with a groan, stays on the right side with brace of shattering hooks. Danes rickety to her left, soaking up leather - she's gutted, staggery as Williams barges in from the side, swinging away at hips, tummy and buttock with both hands. Danes hard to the ropes, groggy, but processing - she puts on a defensive clinic as Mish bears down to finish. Danes bobbing and weaving, gets under wild Williams' swings, spins out into open canvas, keeps her distance with elegant turns and sidesteps. Crowd booing as Claire runs the clock, Mish flushed with exertion, shaking her head as she just can't find the off switch.

R10: Mish driving in with her shoulder, beefy tackle to get Claire ropeside, scrubbing body and hip work as the ref breaks 'em apart and issues warnings. Williams grim, jumping in to wrap and stack Claire against the strands - Mish wants her body on, fists thumping cheap if necessary to grind out this last round. Effective stuff - when Danes gets space - she's defensive, just trying to blunt Williams' attack - when they crowd in close, Williams' strength takes over and she's ragdolling the challenger. Mish unconscionable the way she'll tuck Claire's head into a front choke or lock up on a Danes elbow. Claire yelping in pain, pleading with the ref to do his job - poor guy's wiggling his finger as hard as he can. Scrappy tenth finishes up with Mish mugging Claire in her corner - champ lands a late right hand on the teeth to leave Danes staring after the bell. Comes back...a DRAW! Mish Williams retains her titles!

After: Heartbreak! Dushku ringside, hands on her head, laughing hysterically - Claire looking gutshot, further taunted as Williams treats her to the sight of the belts up close and personal. Rough and tumble getting it done in the narrowest of ways - Williams badly outboxed in many rounds, down on the cards after 8 - to some extent, this might be one of her best performances. Danes unable to solve the gritty little champ, left staring at the canvas in confusion - what's it going to take?
