Jennifer Metcalfe’s impressive demolition of Amy Nuttall at the end of December culminated in the Bradford native calling out former Brookside actress Jennifer Ellison on live television. Ellison, who was in the Cardiff Arena audience was quick to accept. With both girls having fought over the festive period, both were in shape and keen to get it on as early as possible in 2016. In the days leading up to the fight, what was presumably a private feud between the actresses erupted into the open. A shared name and year of birth, together with a penchant to play characters that in the words of one red top columnist “are happy to sleep around”, revealed a rivalry whose fuel was added to with the prospect of a brunette scrapping with a blonde. Jibes by Metcalfe about Ellison’s historic weight problems and failed pop career were returned with interest with barbs about Metcalfe’s love life.

Ellison enters the ring in jeans, a flimsy blue bra that would be more at home in a nightclub than a boxing ring, and matching blue gloves. Metcalfe has chosen a black miniskirt and a yellow top with a plunging neckline, together with yellow gloves.

The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the bantamweight division at Manchester’s MEN Arena.

Round one: A leading right connects for Ellison. Ellison showing a sharp jab, but eats a combination from Metcalfe. One minute in. Southpaw jabs from Metcalfe, then a combination to the body. They tie up with one minute to go. Ellison stalks her opponent and they exchange inside. Another leading right by Ellison but Metcalfe answers in kind. Metcalfe sneaks in a right downstairs, eats another right hand and clinches.

Round two: Metcalfe ties up early. Ellison pushes her away and sneaks in an uppercut and left hook. Hard shots by both girls inside and now Metcalfe is connecting. Ellison trying to chisel away when Metcalfe clinches. Ellison's are the bigger punches thus far as she presses forward. Counter hook by Metcalfe. A short right hook lands for Metcalfe at the end of a combination. Straight left splits Ellison' guard and Metcalfe lands a left at the bell.

Round three: They clinch and both girls connect at point-blank range. Ellison pops Metcalfe with a lead right and gets clinched before the girls trade hooks. Straight rights by Ellison. Big counter left from Metcalfe, who then tries to clinch. Ellison seems invigorated and is pressing forward, throwing to the head and body. Right hook by Metcalfe. Ellison tries to open up on the ropes, gets clinched. Ellison remains aggressive, and eats another straight left for her troubles.

Round four: Metcalfe doing better off the back foot than earlier, still clinching when needed. Metcalfe to the body, right hook upstairs. Ellison just isn't landing clean anymore. As I say that, both girls connect well on the ropes. Metcalfe scoring very well this round. Straight left by Ellison who is trying to slam home body shots, but ends up being warned for hitting the back of the head. Another straight left by Metcalfe. After a strong start by Ellison, it is surely neck and neck on points now.

Round five: Ellison still finding success when leading with her right, and follows it up this time with a body shot. Ellison starting to land well on the inside. Good uppercut. Heavy combinations by Ellison as Metcalfe's making a mistake trying to engage this close. Brutal combinations by Ellison. Metcalfe's taking them well but not getting out of the way. Metcalfe to the body, then a right hook on the exit. One minute to go. Ellison with a left hook on the exit. Metcalfe replies with a hard right hook. Ellison takes it and Ellison cracks Metcalfe with another left hook on the exit. The crowd are going wild as this is anyone’s fight.

Round six: Left hook by Ellison on the inside. Lead right connects. Body shot, left hook. Another left hook. Metcalfe sneaks in a right hook and clinches. Ellison again pops her when leading with a right. Glancing uppercut from Metcalfe. Solid ring cutting by Ellison. Metcalfe finding more success circling in the second minute. Body shot by Metcalfe who then bounces a two-piece off the guard. Another lead right by Ellison; she can't miss with that right now though it is still Metcalfe’s round.

Round seven: Lead left by Metcalfe, who's pivoting well. Lead right by Ellison. Right hook from Metcalfe. Solid uppercut by Ellison. One minute in. Ellison isn't enjoying the kind of success pressuring she did earlier on. Is she tiring faster? Phone booth fight in the center. Ellison's lead right and left to the body continue to be her best shots, but she's getting outlanded here. Metcalfe smirks at the bell. Does she know she has the stronger finish?

Round eight: Exchanging at close range to start the round. Right uppercut slips through for Metcalfe. Right uppercut by Ellison, amongst some swatting body shots. Metcalfe to the body. Ellison comes back with an uppercut. Combinations from both girls. Clinch. More combinations. Suddenly, a left hook from Ellison stuns Metcalfe, who ties up. One minute to go. Metcalfe still throwing but might not have fully recovered. Hard left hands by both girls and it is Ellison who keeps swinging until the bell. Who wants this more?

Round nine: Metcalfe keeping up the combination work. Ellison' punches, hard as they are, just aren't landing clean for the most part. Nice uppercut by Metcalfe, sweeping right by Ellison. They trade uppercuts. Lead right by Ellison. Back to the inside. Nice combination from Metcalfe backs Ellison off. Ellison still finding a lot of success with the lead right. Hard left hand, then a check hook from Metcalfe is followed by a right hook upstairs. They continue to trade until the bell.

Round ten: Straight left by Metcalfe. Ellison clubs away inside. Combinations from Metcalfe, lead right by Ellison. Metcalfe counter left. Ellison again with the lead right. One minute in. Hard hook and left straight by Metcalfe, met by a hook from Ellison. Metcalfe shrugs off a hard left. Ellison sneaks in an uppercut. Lead right lands, clinch. Another counter left from Metcalfe. Hard combinations from Ellison. Ellison unloads a bit, eats a harder combo in return. Both girls raise their hands at the bell, but then proceed to ask their corners if they think they have genuinely done enough.

Jennifer Ellison beats Jennifer Metcalfe with a split decision.

After:
Denise van Outen:”Well then, an evenly contested battle that Jen Ellison controversially sneaks. Let’s now talk to both girls. I know you didn’t touch gloves at the start nor hug at the end so I’ll stand between you now that the hostilities are officially over. Jen (Ellison) was that the right result?”

JE:”Jen was tougher than I was expecting but I thought I landed the bigger shots.”

JM:”Showed more cleavage, more like.”

JE:”Jen, instead of banging your head against me or clinching all the time, if you had wanted to catfight instead of box, you should have just asked (challenges Metcalfe by motioning her towards herself with her hands).”

DvO:”That’s enough now girls, I think I’ll let both of you take a cold shower to cool off (Jens are ushered away with some burly security staff between them). There we have it folks, Jen Ellison proves that in boxing, as with everything else in life, having great tits can prove the difference between winning and losing a tight battle.”
