TENNIS BOXING FROM BRISBANE - THE FINAL

Event: Brisbane International
Venue: Queensland Tennis Centre
Location: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

BEFORE: Victoria Azarenka is the woman to beat Down Under having won Australian Open twice in her career already and with the next edition of the first Grand Slam of the year just around the corner it's no wonder she feels lucky enough to challenge the highly-touted left-hander Angelique Kerber into a boxing match here in Brisbane tonight. The 27 year old German knocked out Camila Giorgi in impressive fashion earlier this week but just as she was ready to leave for Melbourne, Azarenka stuck her foot in the door and the fight was duly approved. Nobody likes to be accussed of ducking a fight on purpose and with the season barely two weeks old Kerber couldn't play the fatigue/injury card to avoid the power puncher from Belarus.

Victoria Azarenka wears a red basque top, matching hotpants and white gloves. Blonde hair tied in a braid. Angelique Kerber wears a violet basque top, black hotpants and violet gloves. Blonde hair tied in a similar braid. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the welterweight division.

Round 1:
Azarenka never hangs back in the ring regardless of her opponent's pedigree and she gives the German a faceful of leather in the early stages jabbing straight through her guard and threatening a haymaker solution. Kerber gives away few inches and struggles to adapt against the towering foe who quickly reels her on the back foot after the head hunting galore begins to take over and gives Victoria a clear advantage for remainder of the round. Kerber tries to dwarf the younger blonde's aggression with some nifty footwork but Azarenka just can't miss her punches here and stacks Angie up with a brutal left/right combo late in the round to dump the aching German onto the turnbuckle and blast a left cross on the mouth that bends Kerber sideways for a good measure.

Round 2:
More Azarenka pressure from the getgo; she bullies through the German guard and picks Angie off repeatedly in the opening minute to send her into quick retreat once the ammount of punches overwhelms the older blonde. Kerber's footwork earns her a brief respite but she can't handle the mid distance assault and always comes up a step short of safety with Victoria powering ahead and settling in the leather pursuit. Kerber swings from the back foot but only grazes the flesh and this is a far cry from her Giorgi demolition as she aches and groans behind an earmuff cover while the Belarussian keeps plugging along and leaves no doubts who's the boss in Brisbane tonight. A hollow look in Angelique's eyes signalls she has no idea how to punish the taller blonde at this moment.

Round 3:
BIG PUNCH VICKY!!! If the younger blonde ever needed a jaw-dropping punch she lands it seconds into the third when she mops Angie on the nose and spins her to the side with a loud yelp... the arms collapse by the side and the German has no chance to prevent a vicious left/right combo that nails her on the lips... AND DOWN GOES KERBER... she crashes down on her knees and nobody around WTA can survive a point-blank range execution from Azarenka!!! The knockdown is very much overdue given the circumstances and the look in Angelique's eyes gets even more teprid as she rises to beat the count at eight... Victoria quickly thrives on the shaken stance of her foe and pounds her back to the ropes ripping brutal harpoons around the elbows to ignore the desperate earmuff upstairs. Chop-her-in-half style of boxing which only increases the German moaning volume and leaves Angelique completely worn out at the bell hugging her bruised midriff and looking unable to mount any meaningful response whatsoever.

Round 4:
Azarenka only gets more aggressive seeing the lack of spark in Kerber's eyes and whoops her up the middle to shatter the high guard and blast a left cross on the nose that wobbles the struggling German forward. For such a tall athlete Victoria is surprisingly quick in close range and blows Angelique's chin with a nifty one-two uppercut combo before spinning her back to the corner with a left hook on the temple... Kerber sags on the turnbuckle but needs to catch the ropes in order to maintain her balance and the whole of Brisbane knows what comes next... BRUTAL LEFT HOOK SWIVELS KERBER'S HEAD NUMB and a driving uppercut from the other side shoves her chin up her brains... All timber from there as the German collapses on her backside and is knocked out of her senses in a truly wicked fashion!!! KO4 Victoria Azarenka!!!

AFTER: That's a huge statement-making victory just days ahead of the Australian Open! One simply shouldn't mess with Victoria Azarenka Down Under! Poor Angie just learned about that the hard way and well, she's gonna need some recovery to elevate herself back into the WTA contention. Beating Camila Giorgi is one thing but getting whooped senseless by one of the most accurate and powerful punchers in the business is something else! Indeed, controlling the power is Azarenka's strongest suit and she's more than ready to make Grand Slam noise again this summer. Australian summer that is...

Final result: Victoria Azarenka def. Angelique Kerber KO4.
