"I've wanted this one for a while... almost as soon as I got management, actually," explained a cheerful Amy Acker. "I had a chance to début against Kate in 2006, and I took it, naturally. I was a long shot to win as a rookie against someone like her, but opportunities like that don't show up often. Anyway, I think I made her work for it, but I didn't manage to get back in the ring until 2012! Not officially, anyway. But now that I've been beating real opponents for a while, I don't feel like such an underdog on my second try!"
Kate Bosworth shared her own thoughts on the upcoming fight. "I don't expect an exact replay of our first fight. Amy and I have both had some time to adapt since then. But I'm not the slightest bit intimidated. To be honest, I've missed the competition ever since transitioning to my role as a trainer, and getting the call from Amy was the excuse I needed to get back in the ring."
Acker made her entrance in blue athletic wear, looking the part of someone determined to recover from a loss until she broke character to pose for pictures. Bosworth, in light green trunks and sports bra, seemed equally serious, as she was hardly a clear favorite to win. The two women touched gloves, though their demeanor made the stakes clear.
Round 1: The fighters slowly escalated the action in the first round, inconclusively skirmishing in the opening before beginning the fight in earnest. Bosworth made the move that provoked the inevitable clash, striking Acker's face with a straight punch after working herself into position. However, when she tried to follow up, Acker's response cut her off, driving the blonde back with multiple head shots. Bosworth rallied, and though Acker gave up hits, her responses gave worse than she got for a hard fought win at the bell.
Round 2: The second round also began slowly, with Bosworth once again instigating after a minute. This time, Bosworth's second swing hit solidly despite Acker's best efforts, striking the brunette on the jaw and causing her guard to weaken momentarily. This was all the invitation that Bosworth needed, and soon the blonde was pounding Acker's face, punishing her moment of weakness. Acker averted catastrophe, but the damage was done, and Bosworth was able to easily overcome Acker's reduced resistance many times before time ran out.
Round 3: Acker earned a partial breather in the third round, keeping Bosworth from continuing her push. The blonde struggled to break through against Acker's reach advantage, and Acker delivered a fairly standard issue punishment in response. While a fairly common result for Acker historically, the performance was quite necessary at this particular moment.
Round 4: Bosworth took the fight to Acker again in the fourth round, going after the taller brunette in the opening seconds. The blonde's punches hit home, rattling Acker, and this time Acker was less able to punish her rival for attacking. While Acker definitely left her mark on Bosworth, beating her to the punch near the halfway mark and using the momentum to land a strong straight left, the blonde was able to walk away with the overall advantage.
Round 5: The fifth round began with Acker trying, mostly successfully, to keep Bosworth away and build up a long term advantage. However, in one of her breakthroughs, Bosworth lunged in for a solid left hand to the jaw. acker was unable to reply in time, and Bosworth's follow up right hand caught her on the side of the face. Acker wobbled to the side for a moment, regaining control of her legs in mid fall, and caught herself on her hands and knees unsteadily when she struck the canvas. She quickly rose to her feet and resumed fighting, but Bosworth, now in control, quickly broke her rival's guard and pursued her onto the ropes. The referee, seeing Acker helplessly battered shortly after being knocked down, was quick to step in to award Bosworth the TKO7.
Bosworth kept her celebrations limited to a victory lap for the cheering audience, taking it in as Acker tried her best to shake off the damage in the safety of her corner. The winner addressed the press once the dust settled. "I think that win answers any questions, doesn't it? Any objections?" Bosworth paused for effect, looking around as if a new rival might materialize. "That said, I do enjoy my job as a trainer. But as you can see, I'm very happy to take a day off to knock out a challenger now and then."
