CLARE BOWEN VS HOLLAND RODEN Clare: 26 YO, 5’ 2 ½ (1.59 m), 3-5-0 since 2012, Unmanaged Holland: 29 YO, 5’3 (1.60 m), Debut, Unmanaged Results: Lookout Writing: Archer
Before: “No,” Clare Bowen of the ABC series “Nashville” says quietly, “I don’t feel any bitterness about being released by Foxfire last year. Jennifer Garner couldn’t have been nicer breaking the news to me. I learned a lot from that organization. I am on my own now. It won’t pretend it hasn’t been difficult, but I am still here and still fighting. Now have this fight. Naturally I want win this fight, though from what I have heard, Holland is not that much of a rookie. Maybe I should be the one asking her for boxing tips.”
Holland Roden, on the other hand, is not at all quiet. The petite redhead bounds up to the podium: “Wow! I had begun to think I’d never be fighting here! I hear Autumn Reeser has been babbling about our fights on the Private Fight Circuit. Geez, doesn’t she know that’s supposed to be the ‘Fights No One Speaks Of’? Oh well, personally, I miss the chance to knock a girl into a lily pond, but don’t you folks worry. ‘Li’l Red’ is here to enliven up this league. I may be small, but I punch hard. And, my gosh, there are so many girls my size around here. I don’t know if I could ever be champion, but I should be able to find a lot of action. I have to thank Clare for giving me a chance. I am sorry Foxfire fired you. That was just not fair. Good thing they didn’t do that to me. At the very least I would put itching powder in the trunks whoever it was they got to replace you. Then sneaked back to watch her do the Funky Chicken.”
Clare couldn’t help but smile: “Well, Adelaide was a good person, I wouldn’t have done that to her—and she was from Australia too. Couldn’t do that to a countrywoman.”
“Ah, you’re a good person Clare Bowen. Actually so is Addie, she was on ‘Teen Wolf’ for a while. I know it was just business, but still, I don’t like to see people lose their jobs. I need to get established around here, so I’m sorry, but I really need to win our fight.”
“I’m sorry, Holland, too. but I need the win too much to lose to you,” Clare said. “I do wish you good luck—just not against me.”
“I can live with that,” Holland assured her and the two of them actually hugged. (Veteran reporters couldn’t have been more bemused. You hardly ever saw a hug at celebrity press event unless it was a bear hug between enraged opponents. Most them applauded this unexpected sportswomanship, but wondered how long it would last in the ring.
For fight night, Holland in a gold with a black pattern bikini, black gloves and boots with gold laces. Red hair piled up in a top knot. Clare in a silver bikini with silver gloves and boots (white laces). Friendly chatter before the bout (the referee seems almost surprised he doesn’t have to keep two raging hellcats apart). It’s very nice, but some hard-nosed fans ae muttering “I thought this was supposed to a fight not a love-fest.”
R1.: Both fighters crisply out of their corners and get into a testing exchange near in the middle of the ring. Probing shots quickly give way to Holland making the first rush of the bout, hammering Clare to the belly and then coming up into the Aussie’s breasts. Clare falling back, getting her jab up to thwart Holland’s follow-up, but the redhead quick on her feet, circling the blonde and striking at her head. Clare swiveling to meet this attack and scores with straight rights to the bridge of Holland’s nose. Holland knocked back, but recovers to come in again. She discovers Clare trying to come in to this sets off some fierce toe-to-toe action. Chins clipped, jaws banged, and breasts flattened as damage mounts rapidly for both fighters, but they keep banging away with determination. Holland gets a really good right uppercut into Clare’s chin and rattles the blonde, who falls back in some disorder. Holland swarming in only get stung with jab to the left eye and a mouth wiping right cross. The redhead’s attack falters, but blonde stays defensive to the bell. Clare probably should have tried to follow-up on those blows to Holland’s face because the round goes to the redhead by a narrow margin.
R2: Clare on the attack this round and hammers at Holland’s head, while the redhead jabs with hard counter shots to stop her. Clare banged to the face by these Roden counters, but she crouches down and moves back on in, but this time she goes after Holland’s midsection, smiting belly and ribs. Holland twisting away from the body attack is able to land on the blonde’s body, but Clare is not to be denied. Sheer blonde pressure backs redhead to the ropes, but Clare can’t quite batter down Holland’s determined defense. They move along the ropes just pounding back and forth. Clare slows Holland’s punchrate with grinding hooks to the body that force the redhead into retreat. Clare can’t corner Holland, but she does emerge winning the round by a close result on the judges’ cards.
R3: Clare’s offensive continues in this round as she rolls right into Holland. However the redhead continues to resist with hard jabbing and adding some footwork trying to swing around the blonde. Clare keeps blocking the ring and keeping Holland contained while firing back steadily at the redhead’s rapidly tenderizing body. Holland must be feeling this damage to her ribs and midsection, but she continues to resist the blonde. Clare paying a price for these attacks: her face is lumping up around the cheekbones and jaw, but, like Holland, the damage isn’t stopping her. Clare finally pushing Holland to the ropes, but again Holland keeps clear, using clinches this time to break up blonde momentum. However it’s enough to keep Clare Bowen from getting another close round added to her count.
R4: Clare surging forward eager to keep Holland on the defensive. Holland getting her body worked over yet again, but she keeps trying to circle and find a hole she can use against the Australian blonde. Clare working on cutting off the ring and then herding Holland back to the ropes. Steady punching from the blonde, but Holland bobbing and weaving still looking. Suddenly redhead makes a quick step to the right just as Clare in unloading a right that sails over Holland’s shoulder. Holland then sends an answering right crunching into Clare’s jaw and CLARE GOES DOWN! Clare knocked off her feet by the blow crashes hard on her side. She groans as she rolls to all fours as the referee starts to count. Clare head clears sufficiently allowing her beat the count. No surprise that Clare does her best to keep Holland at a distance the rest of the round, but that knockdown has allowed the redhead to snatch a round from Clare’s column.
R5: Holland now strongly on the offensive this round. Clare obviously not recovered from the knockdown as she tries to avoid getting in any costly exchanges this stanza. Clare does show an ability to jab defensively as she backs up, but Holland now the one cutting off the ring and trying to herd blonde to the ropes, Clare does resist getting hung up the strands with her retreats and jabbing, so Holland is unable to do a lot of damage, but she does get a lot of points and wins the round wide.
R6: Clare makes an effort to get back in the fight with a quick rush at the beginning of this round. She tries to put some hooks into Holland’s body, but her efforts come to a screeching halt as Holland pops her in the chin with a quick right uppercut. Clare stumbles back and Holland is all over her with a smashing blows to the head that leave the blonde sprawled on her back. Holland to the neutral corner where she watches as the referee starts counting. Clare struggling to rise, but she can’t seem to get her body to obey. Finally she just goes limp and lets the count go past her. THE WINNER: HOLLAND RODEN KO6!
After: Holland Roden leaps high into the air and punches the sky in victory, She gleefully runs around ring pumping that right arm as the crowd applauds. Then she sees Clare being helped to her feet and rushes over to give the defeated blonde a big hug. (Clare too glassy-eyed do more than rest her chin on Holland's shoulder).
“Oh, it is SO good to have that first win behind me! Clare Bowen sure didn’t make it easy for me. She might have tried a little too hard to come back in the 6th. She was attacking, but I could tell she was making too big an effort and not maintaining her defense. I just went for chin and finished her off. Hope she’s okay, she’s a good fighter, I liked her.”
Clare doesn’t comment until later: “I think I was doing a good jab corralling Holland earlier in the fight, but I never could land a good earlier finisher. I was really going for a knockout to the body, but I needed more rounds to wear her down and I didn’t get them. Holland has a lot of energy and she’s a handful as an opponent. Maybe someone else can profit from what happened to me.”
Pretty good fight analysis from the losing Clare B, she did show considerable skill in bottling Holland Roden up, but, as she said, she wasn’t able to land a knockout punch. Open question if she could have beaten Holland to the body over a longer fight. Holland avoided that fate by taking advantage of Clare’s defensive lapses. Redhead showing plenty of energy and good footwork. Of course, it will take more than one victory to gain attention in the crowded “small flyweight” sub-division but she has had a good start.
