Anna Kendrick versus Selena Gomez
(Words: Benny; Results: Lookout!)

Anna first to speak at the podium. She’s a little jittery pre-fight, eyes focused down at the reporters. “Obviously, she’s coming off a title fight. A bout where she had the champ knocked down and fighting for her life. Selena is definitely high level competition, but that’s where I need to be, you know? A fight like this is exactly why I signed with Diamond. I want to measure myself against the best girls. This is where I’ll show everyone what I can do in that ring!” Reporters bring up the differences between the two fighters. “Yes, she has more fights, is seven years my junior, and has a three inch height advantage. So, you might say I’m looking up to my younger opponent.” Kendrick’s late start in the league seeming to weigh on her pre-fight. All the bouts that never materialized… the opportunities never seen...

Selena is asked how she prepared for tonight’s matchup. “The same way I prepare for every fight. You can’t look past a girl like Anna. This isn’t a title fight, but leather will still be flying. Any punch could end your night if you aren’t careful. But I have confidence that I’ll land the final blow. Every day in the gym, I’m training for a title. And any girl in front of me is going to feel that championship training. Tonight, that unlucky girl is Anna Kendrick. I’m going to fight my fight show her what’s it’s like to fight one of the top girls in this division.”

Quite the contrast for the referee’s instructions. Anna jumping up and down, champing at the bit to get it on. Selena calm and focused. Selena’s tanned, caramel skin contrasts with Anna’s alabaster complexion. Kendrick in a blue and white, athletic cut two-piece. Gomez opting for a flirty red and black bikini. It leads to a tense staredown at midring. Gears have shifted. Both girls now in fight mode.

Round 1: The girls skip out to center ring and touch gloves again. A contrast in styles already presenting itself. Selena looks comfortable in her classic stance, shoulders rolling easily as probes Anna’s defenses. Kendrick showing more energy, clearly eager to start the action. But her opening salvo is sloppy and disjointed. Selena easily slips and dodges the punches, her eyes scanning Kendrick’s defenses for potential openings. Gomez just dancing in the center of the ring. She’s content to let Anna set the pace, but Kendrick just can’t seem to locate her girl. Selena does have a reach advantage and she’s using it to great effect here in the first. With her left hand outstretched, Gomez finds her range. She’s daring Anna to dart inside. Kendrick a bit too smart to take the bait. She knows she doesn’t have the reach, so Anna is content to back the Latina spitfire up, taking over position in the center of the ring and forcing Selena to skip around the outside. A few skirmishes almost break out, but both girls are a bit too cautious to engage. Anna’s ring position probably gives her the points, but both girls gain valuable information about their opponent.

Round 2: Kendrick up quick off the stool as she sprints out to midring. She must really want that real estate… and Selena is willing to let her have it. Gomez knows she has the extra inches, and she’s content to begin quick strikes from the outside. Though Anna has the better position, it’s Selena pushing the action. Gomey snapping out the jab, landing to Anna’s cheek and forehead. Kendrick is trying to time it right. She’s looking to counter off Selena’s single punches. The Latina is happy to touch up her girl for points… until her glove finds nothing but air! Anna ducks under the punch and steps into the pocket, unloading two big hooks to Selena’s body. Gomez throws her arms around the shorter girl as they wrestle for position. Anna stays compact, looking to throw straight up the middle and work the torso. Selena pouty faced as she tries to dig to the flanks. The in-fighting negates Selena’s height advantage but she’s no stranger to blasting away toe to toe. Down the stretch, it’s Kendrick, pushing her girl back and ripping those hooks and uppercuts inside! Selena gets her licks in as well. Observant fans can see Kendrick’s flanks showing the marks of hard-hearted punching. At the bell, Selena smiles and shakes her head, motioning with her gloves for Anna to bring it on in the next round and showing the brunette didn’t hurt her. Kendrick stares for a moment before stomping back to her corner.

Round 3: The break finds Gomez listening intently to her trainers, while Kendrick keeps glaring across the ring. Anna staring daggers at the LCA corner, as she didn't like how the last round ended. Off the stool, and it's Kendrick quick to close again… but Selena knows it’s coming! Gomez unleashes a big hook to the body followed by a crashing uppercut to the head! The body blow freezes Anna, while the uppercut sends her defenses haywire! Kendrick trying to cover up now, as Selena manages the distance, taking what she wants with precise, biting punches! Kendrick showing the hurt on her face as she falls back into the ropes, Selena setting up shop right in front of her. The girls trade salvos, but Gomez has the superior position as she continually hammers down on Anna’s defenses. She’s landing heavy shots to tummy and cheek, turning her hips into each punch to add extra venom. Kendrick is trying to pick her spots, managing some solid offense to Selena’s chest, followed by an overhand right that crashes to her chin. If that punch hurt Gomez, she sure doesn’t show it, as she fires right back. It’s rousing two-way action and the crowd rises to their feet, sensing a decisive blow could be coming. At the ten second warning, Selena kicks her offense into overdrive. A firestorm of punches rain down on Kendrick… It’s all she can do to cover up best she can, but she can’t send anything back! The ref dives in to pull Selena off as she shouts to her fans, matching the roar of the crowd! Anna left hanging in the ropes for a moment, chest heaving as she tries to pull it back together. But she’s a hurt beauty after three.

Round 4: It’s all focus this time in the Diamond corner. Lots of TLC for their fighter and Anna’s eyes are bright as she comes out for the fourth. It looks like she’s learned her lesson. Kendrick much more cautious as the two girls close. Selena follows suit, resuming her traditional stance and flicking out the jab again. Anna is hiding behind a solid defense, catching those jabs on her gloves. She’s inching closer each time, waiting for her moment… Suddenly, she springs forward, throwing a big combination! The first hook catches Selena clean on the chin, rocking her and sending her stumbling backward! Seeing Gomez finally hurt energizes the shorter girl and she’s unloading the entire arsenal! It’s big beefy hooks to the body, followed by some heavy uppercuts to Selena’s chest! Gomez sags back into the ropes, covering up and catching what she can… but Anna just won’t stop! Kendrick keeps pushing, even as Selena’s defense solidifies and she catches more and more of the attack. Does Anna sense that she can end the fight with this flurry? She continues to push hard, teeth bared as she puts all she's got into this assault! Kendrick still throwing heavy blows late into the round, mouth breathing as she keeps slinging, hoping to really hurt her girl. Gomez throwing enough back to keep the ref happy as she rides out the storm, her arms pinking up from the volume of leather she’s caught this round. In the closing moments, Anna is panting as she tries to land the telling blows. But a small opening in her defense allows Selena to slam a solid uppercut to her solar plexus! Selena slides along the ropes to her corner, while Anna slumps forward into the ropes, her face twisting in pain. She burned so much fuel that round trying to get her girl out of there, and that last punch really dug deep. The Diamond corner is out to collect her as Anna is covering her body with her gloves, tears forming in her eyes.

Round 5: Kendrick has her eyes shut tight as her corner goes to work. She’s gassed after going for the KO, and only has an aching tummy to show for it. It’s all smiles in Selena’s corner, though she takes the ice and the rubdown as well. Kendrick gingerly up off her stool as she bravely closes to start the round. Her chest is still heaving and she’s wincing in pain as she’s still suffering the effects of her sustained flurry and Selena’s final blow. Gomez is in no hurry to close down space. She knows her prey is wounded and the vultures are circling. Selena resumes midring, picking her girl apart with surgical strikes. Slicing, precision blows that keep Anna off balance and pile on the damage. Kendrick keeps trying to rush inside, to close the distance and work the body. But each time, she meets the end of another stiff Selena jab. Though Anna is most definitely hurting, there’s no quit in her. And in the final minute she manages to break through and land her punches on the Latina torso. Selena willing to trade, believing that she can win inside and outside tonight. In the final moments, it’s Gomez landing the big hook that ROCKS Anna, unhinging her knees and sending her wobbly butt! The bell rings, leaving Kendrick staggering backwards and still reeling! And Selena raises her gloves to the crowd, shouts of jubilation escaping her lips.

Round 6: The Diamond corner is a disaster scene. Anna is shaking her head and fighting back tears as the frustration boils to the surface. She’s thrown everything at her opponent, but Selena seems to have all the answers. Her trainers take her face in their hands, tending to her wounds but also trying to calm her down. Anna takes it all in. She knows she’s behind, knows she desperately needs a comeback KO. And though the hurt is still written all over her face, she rises and bangs her gloves together to start the next round. The crowd roars as the girls close for round six. Selena even looks a bit surprised at Anna’s fighting spirit. In a veteran move, Gomez takes her time, probing Kendrick’s defense. Each punch seems to land, as Anna’s face gets puffy and pouty from hurt after each blow. Selena knows it’s time to end this, and she launches forward! Two hammering jabs, followed by two ripping hooks to the body, and a tight left uppercut that explodes on Kendrick’s chin! It catches Anna flush and sends her crashing down to the canvas, leaving her spread eagle, eyes pinched tight in a daze! Selena a bit reserved as she heads to the neutral corner. She knows that combo was the kindest way to KO a wounded girl like Kendrick. But as the ref counts higher, Anna begins to stir! It’s a slow, creaking rise as she rolls over at three… pushes up to her knees at six… hauls herself up the ropes at eight… and she STANDS! She sways a bit as the ref grabs her gloves… and he’s going to let her try! The Diamond corner showing a mix of excitement and disappointment. They are grateful for Anna’s fighting spirit, but know she’ll have to soak up more punishment tonight. To her credit, Selena knows the score. And at the restart, she uses her forearms to bully Kendrick back into the ropes. Anna stumbling on shaky legs as Gomez sets up shop in front of her. And Selena opens up the floodgates! It’s a constant stream of punches, flowing down and crashing on every inch of Anna’s exposed flesh! Clever observer’s note that Selena’s not getting her legs and hips into each punch. Perhaps this is merciful work from the Latina beauty? She’s eyeing the ref as he hovers, anticipating the impending stoppage. A few token punches come from Anna… but it’s Selena’s tight little hook to Anna’s tummy that ends it! Kendrick collapses to the canvas, clutching her body as the tears begin to flow. The count is a formality as Anna makes no attempt to rise. Selena begins her celebration, flexing and preening for the appreciative crowd. Quite a dominant display by your winner, by big KO6, Selena Gomez!!

After: Anna Kendrick stays down after the bell. Her gloves and boots pounding the canvas as she tries to process the hurt. That ill-timed, all-in call during the fourth round proved her undoing tonight. The Diamond corner is very gentle with their girl at Benny’s request, doing their best to shield her from the media as she attempts to recover. It takes several minutes to get her back to her corner, giving Selena Gomez plenty of time to show her appreciation to the crowd. Both girls have their gloves removed as they meet at center ring for the announcement. Selena quickly wraps her arms around Anna, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead and some surely kind words. After Selena’s arm is raised reporter’s grab both girls.

Kendrick simply asked to talk about the fight. She wipes away tears with her handwraps as she tries to answer. “Yeah, this fight did NOT go well! Umm… I just… I really wanted to win this one… but Selena really had my number tonight." She pauses to take a breath and wipes her wet eyes again. "I know I shouldn't be crying right now, I'm sorry, that's stupid of me..." Anna takes a moment to try and collect herself. "Selena Gomez had a great fight and she’s a great boxer. I’m sure my trainers will break down the tape and find some positives for me… I must have accidentally done something right. But right now… I should probably see a doctor because she punched me… everywhere…” Selena offering another hug, holding Kendrick for a minute before Anna retreats to the locker room.

Gomez stands at center ring, lighting up the room with her thousand-watt smile. She’s asked to talk about the KO. “I knew I had her at the end of the fourth. She gave me her best punches, and I’m sure I’ll be sore tomorrow. But, I used my skills… survived her assault, and I was able to land my punches when I needed. It was only a matter of time. I mean, she’s an up and coming fighter. I wanted to fight her and see what she was made of. Now I can tell you she’s a great boxer and I’m sure she’ll be back stronger next time. But I need to refocus on the championship. I’ve been so close to that title. I dream about how close I was and it makes me crazy! I showed tonight what I can do in the ring. The whole division better watch out, because no matter who holds that belt, they are only keeping it warm until I come claim it!”
