Sophia Bush versus Zoey Deutch (Words: ABC / Results: Lookout!)
Pre-fight: A packed crowd seem eager to catch Zoey Deutch in her debut fight here, and what a test she has, going up against the resurging Sophia Bush, who had one of the most impressive comebacks of 2015, successfully resurrecting her boxing career right up until a disastrous loss to nemesis Jenna-Louise Coleman at the end of the year. The big question tonight is whether or not the 33-year-old can bounce back from the humiliating defeat, or if that comeback ship has sailed. And what can we expect from young Zoey Deutch? Only time shall tell.
Zoey seems confident on debut, and eager to strut her stuff. “I have to admit, I felt sorry for Sophia watching her last fight. Jenna is a bully alright, and I know Sophia had to skip the JMD PPV in order to recover, but I’m not taking it easy on her. She better be ready, because I’ve come to mark my name on the FCBA, and I am more than happy to start with her.”
Sophia keen to get back on track, and adamant that she is still as good as ever. “I had one bad night, that’s it. And even then, I almost had Jenna. I’m NOT done, and it’s starting to piss me off that people are thinking that. If I have to prove it, fine, but good luck mopping up the Zoey-shaped mess I leave behind afterwards.”
Round 1: The two beautiful brunettes come together at centre-ring and it is clear early that Zoey isn’t messing around, as she plays to strategy, popping an early jab at Sophia’s right jug, jiggling the orb, and the quick assault seems to have the veteran a little stunned. Perhaps Zoey wittingly triggering flashbacks? Either way, Sophia flinching fully, and Deutch takes full advantage, slamming right glove into Bush’s mouth, putting her on the back foot, literally. Sophia raising the guard, and Zoey happy to find abs and ribs, giving her opponent a bit of a battering, and really testing her constitution early. Sophia seems to be in decent condition as she promised, and holds up so far, even slipping some jabs out from her guard to tag Zoey’s face while she focuses a little too intently on offense. She keeps coming though, and Sophia chooses to dance about, evading, rather than working the guard. A lot of cat and mouse throughout the first, but Zoey seems to be in control for the most part, surely giving herself a big confidence boost considering the start her debut has taken.
Round 2: Zoey thinking a little text book, attempts the same ploy, but Sophia is ready, and sure not willing to take any jug shots today, and finds the guard well, countering with a rising left hook that thumps into Zoey’s cheek and shocks her, presumably with the force. Zoey blinking, and Sophia smacks leather into tummy, bringing a look of instant realization from Zoey. She’s not facing some pushover here, and certainly not the softened retiree she was hoping for. Sophia clearly benefitting from her January break, and she looks fit and nimble as she dances around Deutch, popping leather into head and ribs alternatingly. Zoey struggling to keep up for a lot of it, reacting with guard, but often not quite quick enough, and she seems frustrated as the round comes to an end, Sophia wearing on her with relentless though not so damaging peppering with quick short jabs.
Round 3: Jabs flying to start the third, each stinging pretty cheek, and this time Zoey pre-empts a sidestep from Sophia, and the risk pays off, Deutch’s leather flashing out into incoming Sophia nose, startling her and staggering the beauty back into a heavy hook from Zoey that slams flush against her right cheek. And Sophia is wobbly! Zoey clearly wanting to break her opponent, not taking any chances, and she slams straight right, left combos against defenceless jugs, mushrooming them beneath the leather and getting cries of protest from the worried brunette. Sophia backed against the ropes and Zoey starts alternating, burying fists into tummy, ribs and jug, and then launching and uppercut to chin that really tests the older woman’s resolve. Somehow the legs hold, and Zoey decides to really test her with a straight right that slams into Sophia’s right eye. It’s puffy quickly and sure to be black before long, and Sophia looks worried, but she still stands, further frustrating young Zoey, who seems to think she deserves a KO already. She tries whacking away some more at Sophia’s head, but Bush has turtled now, trying to keep herself awake until the bell, obviously needing a chance to reset and her head must be swimming. The bell comes none too soon as Zoey’s gloves lower and she looks about to target jug again, but the ref ensures that nothing comes post-bell, and Bush should really be thankful.
Round 4: Sophia looks too angry to be hurt as she glares at her young opponent as the fourth begins. Zoey looks frustrated, and leaps at Bush, wanting to knock her lights out. But Sophia has had a chance to clear the cobwebs and she is clearly thinking straight again. She dodges the wild overhand, blocks the straight left, and then counters with a sharp uppercut that snaps Zoey’s chin up and slams an angry right glove into the young cutie’s throat. Zoey is gagging, backstepping, needing distance. Sophia pushes, merciless and intent on vengeance, now choosing to light up impressive jugs, rising hooks to underboob and bunching the orbs up painfully, Zoey’s face showing how bad that must feel. Zoey defiantly bats Sophia’s gloves away from her chest, but Bush snaps a jab into the youngster’s nose, drawing blood, and that hands fly up, baring jug again for Sophia to soften and flatten with powerful straights. Zoey held against the ropes and taking an absolute beating as Sophia seems to take out her anger on the buxom brunette. Zoey bruised and wobbly, miserable as the bell sounds a chance for her to pull herself together. Sophia smirking as she saunters to her corner, leaving Zoey to hug herself and try to regroup, Bush clearly done playing.
Round 5: Where more experienced women have crumbled and fallen apart, young Zoey shows tremendous resilience, somehow rebounding early in the fifth to shovel hooks into Sophia’s ribs and abs, only slowed by the occasional jab that sends her jugs bouncing. The two honeys trade serious fists, each with serious power, and there are a mass of bruises left on each gorgeous, fit body. But each talented boxer weathers the storm and the trade-off looks like a stalemate until Zoey lets a nasty glove slip below the waistline. Sophia’s eyes bulging, her knees wobbly, and the ref steps in to allow her a moment, as that is not on. It is deemed an accident, but one has to wonder, especially considering the smirk Zoey is giving her older opponent. The shot has clearly hurt Sophia, and she seems slightly slower for the remainder of the round, Zoey sidestepping a few shots and planting her gloves into breadbasket and jug, bringing sour looks to Sophia’s bruised, but lovely face.
Round 6: Sophia comes in with an angry overhand, but Zoey ducks and rises into a deep right that crushes Sophia’s poor right jug in on itself. A scream from Sophia and ‘ooohs’ from the crowd, as even the cheap seats felt that one. Sophia has the stumbles as a result and Zoey tags her bruised cheek. But Sophia responds, slamming her own glove flush against jug, squashing Zoey’s left breast and getting a yelp from the starlet. Glove to Sophia’s gut is followed by a rising hook to Zoey’s chin, and the trade-off is on again, with each beauty slamming leather into the other until one gives. But the bruises worsen and the legs continue to wobble to no avail. These two women can take one hell of a beating, and once the bell sounds, they have clearly battered each other equally, but both still stand.
Round 7: Zoey seems to expect another trade and wades in with hooks for Sophia’s abs, but the response is a strong right cross that bounces off Zoey’s jawline, and she is stumbling! Zoey can’t stand straight, and a sluggish jab is easily blocked by Sophia and countered with a straight right that plows into Zoey’s mouth, busting a lip. Zoey bounces off the ropes right back into a left cross that opens her right cheek, and Zoey is punch-drunk. Sophia uppercuts Zoey’s right boob, likely for payback, and the bouncing, bruised orb is only a warning, as the next uppercut slips between jugs and cracks underneath chin, sending Zoey into the air! Deutch is off her feet and lands flat on her back, eyes glassy, hands reaching for sore jug and face. Zoey is still flat on her back ten seconds later, and we have a winner. KO7, Sophia Bush!
Post-fight: A promising start from young Zoey Deutch on debut, but in the end, Sophia Bush showed she is far from done yet, and has again made clear her intent to be a relevant name in the FCBA. The resilience of both these talented women is something to marvel at, as is the power they each pack into those gloves, but something had to give eventually, and it was the legs of the youngster.
“Zoey is going to be very dangerous with some training,” Sophia stated in her post-fight interview. “She is naturally tough. She’s very raw and undisciplined, but damn she’s tough. She hits hard, too. But as I said before, I’m not done, and I am more than happy to prove it. I’m here to stay, whether dirty b###hes like Zoey like it or not. You can’t. and won’t, keep me down.”
