BEFORE:
"We got along," says Dichen with a smile. "But, there were things we needed to sort out, and that didn't exactly get done. Now's the time to do it."
"Oh, I know where this is coming from," says Chloe with a nod. "She's been gunning for me since the first time she walked on set. Careful what you wish for, you know?
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Boom Clap' by Charli XCX you hear, but that's not Charli, it's the first girl to use the song as her intro here in the FCBA, the lovely Dichen Lachman..."
McCarthy: "And don't even START with that Nepal stuff this time, Scabbo. I KNOW where it is."
Cassie: "Did you know the capital is Kathmandu?"
McCarthy: "You are MAKING THAT UP!"
O'Dell: "And, again, I'm going to request Wiz not bring in anyone from anywhere more exotic than Oxnard. Lachman into the ring and helped off with the robe to reveal that red number we saw the last time she was here, and that's..."
McCarthy: "An absolutely HORRIBLE song by a TERRIBLE singer and an even WORSE fighter..."
O'Dell: "A-HEM! That is 'Uh Oh', by the young lady now coming down to the ring, 'The Next Big Thing', Chloe Bennet!"
Tess: "Bennet looking like being close to stepping up into contender status, Jenny. She's won nine straight now, and those victims include names like Taylor, Lotz, and, last time out, Benoist."
Cassie: "No question Chloe is the real deal. 2016 can be a big year for her, but she has to start it by taking care of business tonight."
O'Dell: "Bennet into the ring and helped off with the robe. She's wearing that familiar blue two-piece and it gets the crowd buzzing as usual. Ladies about ready. Let's get some picks. Tess favors Bennet. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Lachman actually HAS a couple of FCBA wins, so she's better than most girls Weirdo brings in here, but I still have to favor Bennet."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "It's unanimous. Let's see if the ladies are right. Lachman wants to go to the jab off the bell. She's taller, has some range on Bennet, wants to make use of it. Chloe stepping to, slipping that guard and banging body. Dichen willing to play this game, thumping back at the younger woman..."
Tess: "Dichen a big bantam. She's not likely to get bullied around in there."
O'Dell: "And this is getting hot and heavy right away, as both fighters dig heavy shots amidships and then work back upstairs. No question there are efforts at will imposition going on and BENNET WITH AN UPPERCUT! Lachman staggered with that right uppie by Chloe, and Bennet now sets the guns to blazing..."
Cassie: "Never saw that. Put it right up the middle on her."
O'Dell: "And Lachman now seeing a blizzard of leather. Bennet looking to take care of this thing right away. Lachman managing to stay off the ropes, but she's taking heavy fire, fire that's shaking her legs. Bennet sound, setting punches up, still working some body. Cleaning up very well. But, she's going to run out of time. There's the bell. End of the first. Bennet wide."
McCarthy: "And, she looks plenty pleased with herself on the way back to the corner, but, any time you have a chance to finish and can't, it can come back to bite you."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Bennet looking to keep the momentum going here in the second, but Lachman's shaken the last round off pretty quickly and she's giving some spirited resistance here, laying heavy leather into Bennet as Chloe works Dichen over just as thoroughly. Lots and lots of body work going on right now, Mac..."
McCarthy: "No question what's happening here. This isn't as much about winning a fight as it is PROVING something. I LIKE these kinds of fights."
O'Dell: "Up and down the fighters work. They're at middle distances now, where both seem to be comfortable. it's body, then head, then body, fighting a war of attrition here that both women seem confident of winning. Lachman ripping a right to the ribs and Bennet coming back with a pair of hooks to each flank..."
Cassie: "I've been doing a little research leading up to this one, and what I found out might tell you why you're seeing such a physical fight thus far. I've been told that Lachman and Bennet did NOT spar on the set of 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' because producers didn't want either fighter getting marked up and messing up a tight shooting schedule. But, Lachman got the impression that Bennet, a managed fighter, had decided not to 'stoop' to sparring with and indie like her and let some people know what she thought about that, and Chloe didn't like it one bit. Both girls were professional on set, but, this has been brewing for a long time."
O'Dell: "And, the brew is quite a strong one, as these ladies are intent on breaking one another down, not an easy trick, as, again, these are solid bantams. Lachman heavier and sturdier than she was a few years ago, and Chloe just about as physical as any bantam you'll find around the FCBA. And, they'll bang away right to the bell without a backward step. Chloe close."
Tess: "And, Bennet now up 20-18 after two."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "More warfare as we start the third. Fighters right at one another again, middle distances, back-and-forth, salvo followed by counter-salvo. Both fighters getting off some heavy shell, and both shipping it and firing right back. Lot of body work going on, but plenty of leather landing upstairs as well..."
Tess: "And, again, this heavier Lachman able to stand in there with Bennet. The 2012 Lachman would not have."
O'Dell: "AND THERE'S A RIGHT HAND, DICHEN! Lachman hurt Bennet for a second there and she follows with a blizzard of leather that forces the younger fighter to back and cover. Lachman letting the hands go in a big way, trying to finish Chloe! Bennet seems to have shaken off the worst effects of the right hand quickly, but she's being forced backward by the sheer volume of work."
McCarthy: "Lachman needs to keep pouring it on. She's got this kid in full retreat."
O'Dell: "And, that's exactly what she's doing. Dichen suppressing Bennet, who's spending most of her time covering up. Chloe able to counter in spots, but can't solidify her front. Lachman complete control down the stretch. Ten seconds left in the third. Good right from Dichen, and there's the bell. Big round for Lachman, who takes it wide."
Cassie: "And cuts Bennet's lead to 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth begins with Dichen looking to consolidate, but Chloe not having it. Bennet banging right back and we've got another fire fight on our hands. This is bitter, mid-range stuff, with both fighters sitting down on their punches, trying to impose will, while continuing to work the body as there's a war of attrition going on as well."
Cassie: "And the word 'bitter' definitely applies, if the looks exchanged after that last round mean anything. And, I'm betting they do."
O'Dell: "As do the punches being exchanged right now. Chloe working a TON downstairs in this stanza, really digging on Dichen. Lachman doing her share down there, but spending just as much time upstairs, and she's very effective up there, putting together punches extremely well right now."
McCarthy: "She's looking to back the kid up again. Hasn't had any success doing it this round, though."
O'Dell: "She has not, and she continues not to be able to do so as we head down the stretch. Final 30 seconds. Action hasn't slowed much. Bennet thumping Lachman's ribs. Dichen wincing but responding with a solid jab-cross-hook combination, head-head-body, that scored some points. Five seconds left. Good right from Bennet, and there's the bell. Close to Lachman."
Tess: "And, we are all tied at 38 after four."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth starts with more aggression from Bennet. Chloe wants to close now and work inside. No more middle distances for the Front Streeter. She wants to do some Allison Mack grinding. Lachman tying up, trying to shove off for space, but Bennet not having any. She's in Dichen's grill pounding her body."
Cassie: "I like this change in strategy. This is a beefier, sturdier Lachman, but I don't think even this Lachman can bang body with Bennet."
O'Dell: "We're about to find out, because that's exactly what this round is turning into. There's enough work going on upstairs to keep everyone honest, but that's about it. The rest of the time being spent banging bellies and whacking ribs. Lachman still trying to get some space here, but not having any success."
McCarthy: "Needs to land another one of those right hands like she did in the third. THAT will get her space."
O'Dell: "Short of that, though, not happening. Bennet closing any distance Lachman opens with the feet, and able to shrug off all attempts to slow her down with clinches, so Dichen responding in kind instead. Ten seconds left of the fifth round, and they'll dig body right to the bell. Lachman did enough to keep it close, but it's Bennet's round."
Tess: "And, Chloe leads 48-47 at the half."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "No change in the strategy to start the sixth. Bennet right forward again, bobbing and weaving past Dichen's defenses and ROCKED! Rocked with a perfectly-timed right hand from Lachman! Bennet stepping in fence post holes and Dichen now following up, actually hesitated a second..."
McCarthy: "Happened so quickly, she didn't realize it herself, but she does now!"
O'Dell: "No question about it, and it's desperation time for Bennet, who's wobbly and taking heavy fire in the middle of the ring. Chloe covering up, being backed up, now trapped on the ropes and at the mercy of the older woman. And Lachman having absolutely NO mercy as she goes RACK ON BENNET!"
Cassie: "There's a line. And Lachman just crossed it."
O'Dell: "And, now that she's across, she's going ahead and OBLITERATING it, working the rack to try to drop Bennet's high guard, then going back upstairs for some solid shots that shake Chloe and wobble her knees. Referee looking in there. He's not going to watch much more of this. Bennet tying up and hanging on. Dichen throwing everything at her rival trying to finish this thing. Twenty seconds to go, more rack work from Lachman and then a hard right hand that sends sweat flying. Bennet slapping out a left hand, then grabbing Lachman, running clock. Five seconds. Chloe's going to end it on her feet, but she's much the worse for the wear at the bell. Shutout, Lachman."
Tess: "And Dichen shoving up off Chloe after the bell."
Cassie: "This is getting UG-LEE."
Tess: "And, it's all even at 57."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Lachman moving in for the kill now. She's looking to finish a scuffed Chloe Bennet, coming forward behind her left, closing up and working in close and THERE'S RIGHT UPPIE FROM BENNET THAT KNOCKS DICHEN INTO THE ROPES! Lachman thunderstruck, only the ropes stopped her from crashing down in a heap!"
Cassie: "That uppercut a thing of BEAUTY, Jenny! Up under a left hook and right on the chin!"
O'Dell: "And now it's BENNET obliterating that line. She's going rack on a stunned Lachman and in a major way. Chloe pummeling Dichen to the bust line, dropping down to the midsection and then going upstairs. She's firing leather from every possible angle and giving her rival an absolute MAULING against the ropes!"
McCarthy: "Give the ref credit. He gave Bennet some rope last round, and he's giving Lachman the same this round."
O'Dell: "But she might be coming to the end of it. Dichen doing very little as Chloe bangs away, she's absolutely ABUSING the rack now as a desperate Dichen keeps the guard high and hangs on as we come down the stretch. Lachman trying to crouch to protect some of that body, but Bennet shouldering her upright and digging midsection. Ten seconds left, one more solid right to the head from Bennet and there's the bell."
Tess: "That was some turnaround, Jenny. From a shutout for Lachman to a shutout for Bennet! And Chloe now up 67-66 with three to go."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Bennet all seek and destroy as we start the eighth..."
McCarthy: "Better watch it. This is exactly what Lachman did the last round, coming forward looking to finish."
O'Dell: "Bennet, SNAPPING that left home, popping Dichen's head back, dropping a hard right in behind it. Lachman still wobbly, giving ground, looking every bit as scuffed as Bennet did at the beginning of the last round. Chloe measuring now, using a lot of jabs, looking to set that right hand up..."
Cassie: "Two things. Excellent discipline by a girl who's still only in her 13th fight. Not getting wild. Not even getting impatient. Still working to set things up. And, number two, what she's measuring Lachman for is a COFFIN..."
O'Dell: "HARD right from Chloe backs Lachman up a step. Dichen jabs back and DOWN SHE GOES! Bennet the right hook and Lachman dropped to her right side. Chloe to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Lachman pushing up to forearm and hip. Seven. Eight. Nine. She's can't get up! TEN! It's over! And your winner by KO8 in BRUTAL fashion is 'The Next Big Thing', Chloe Bennet!"
Tess: "Let's check that right hook on the replay, Jenny. Watch Lachman's jab come out and the hook already on the way. BAM! Catches her right on the side of the face, swivels the head, and cuts power to the legs. Heck of a punch."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "Chloe, that got really brutal and pretty nasty in there."
Chloe (nodding): "I mean, I don't usually fight that way. But, I CAN fight that way, if you know what I mean. You want to go there, I can go there."
Tess: "She had you in some trouble a couple of times..."
Chloe: "No doubt. She can hit, and she caught me with a good one once or twice. But, what was it she said, pre-fight? That there was some stuff that needed sorting out? Well, it's ALL sorted now. And, I can RE-sort it any time she'd like."
