Given their very public altercation after Kelly Hall’s defeat of Emily Atack, a fight with Atack’s Girls Friday stablemate, Maria Ozawa, was always going to be a case of when and not if. Given the vitriol they were posting about one another on Twitter, the two sounded as though they would quite happily slug it anywhere and at any time, if they ended up in the same room together, so it made commercial sense for the BBU to let nature take its course, and to make a tidy pay-per-view profit at the same time. The bout was added extra spice by the prospect of the fight leading to the first defeat in the ring for either girl, and their mutual insistence on as many rounds as would be necessary for a knockout of some description to decide the outcome.
Maria Ozawa enters the ring in the Thomas Robinson stadium, Nassau, in a white bikini and matching gloves. Kelly Hall, by contrast, is sporting a black bikini and matching gloves. Ozawa is seen to mouth, "You don't have it b###h! I'm going to put you away!" In response, Hall smiles and seems to mouth, "We'll see."
Round one: Ozawa ducks a big left hook and clinches. Both girls are moving their heads very well early on. A stiff left hand causes Hall to stumble, and her glove touches the mat for a knockdown. She is straight back up again though and leads with a right before connecting with a left hook to the body. Ozawa fires back with body blows of her own. Hall digs to the body yet again, but Ozawa fires back with a big right. Both dig to the body, then a 1-2 from Ozawa sends Hall to her knees. She's up well in time, but it's a 10-7 round for Ozawa.
Round two: A fired up Hall aggressively moves forward. Ozawa lands to the body. A left hook lands for Hall. Hall digs to the body, Ozawa does the same and strays low. Hall pushing forward behind her jab. A good right hand on the pivot by Hall is followed by a hard combination from Ozawa in response. Ozawa sneaks in a straight right, and is rewarded by a 1-2-3 from Hall, which backs Ozawa up. The referee steps between the fighters, signifying the end of the round and giving Ozawa time to regain her bearings, even though there were are 25 seconds left.
Round three: Ozawa lands a body shot, eats a right hand and is warned again for low blows. Ozawa slams home a right hand that appears to go low as well, Hall winces and looks at the referee, who doesn’t see the point in deducting a point since judges won’t have a say in the outcome. With her focus momentarily broken, a right hand dings Hall but she recovers and the two trade haymakers in the corner. Both girls are landing heavy shots. A good right hand once again connects from Hall which wobbles Ozawa, or at least knocks her off-balance. Ozawa lands on the beltline and Hall futilely claims it's low.
Round four: The pace doesn't show any sign of slowing down in the early going. A straight right by Hall lands. One minute in, Hall cracks Ozawa with a left hook. Ozawa is being outlanded by a fair margin. With her back to the ropes, Hall is throwing dozens of punches at Ozawa’s head. One minute to go. Ozawa to the body on the counter and Hall replies with another hard left upstairs. Ozawa is visibly slower than in the first round. Hall's jab is working very well in the latter portion of the round.
Round five: Ozawa starts the round with a nice body jab. She follows up with a double left hook, but eats a 1-1-2 in reply. Hall adds an uppercut to the head. Ozawa is landing some good shots on the counter, particularly to the body, though, Hall's jab is paying dividends. Nice left hook by Ozawa before the bell: her timing and the rhythm of her bobbing and weaving have improved.
Round six: Now it is Ozawa who shows off her jab before a nice straight right thuds against the right side of Hall’s face, knocking her back into the ropes behind her. The English fighter seems OK albeit a little stiff in her upper body and makes circular hand gestures as if to say, “Bring it on.” Ozawa obliges and lands a tremendous, whipping left hook to Hall’s head, again knocking her into the ropes. An uppercut and left hook, both land clean. Hall takes it like a champ and comes back with a heavy straight right. The round ends with the girls clinching. How the hell did Hall finish that round without being knocked down? Her cheek is visibly swollen and her second, Emma Glover, is having trouble applying an effective icepack to it in the Nassau heat.
Round seven: Again Ozawa starts strong, this time going to the body. Hall replies with a right of her own to the gut and follows up with a check hook. Ozawa's defense is holding up this round and she digs to the body before Hall replies in kind. The round ends with a right to the body by Hall, before she gets popped herself with a lead right from Ozawa at the bell.
Round eight: A nasty body shot from Hall prompts a clinch. Hall is illegally pulling down on Ozawa’s neck in the clinches, helping her to smother the latter. Is the referee blind? Both girls land well inside, judging by their yelps. 1-2-3 connects for Hall, before they clinch again. Ozawa targets the body, but eats another good shot upstairs. Hall is complaining to the ref about low blows when the clinches are being broken up, then immediately lands one of her own! They get a stern talking-to. A straight right, then a right uppercut, is followed up by a nice right straight after a jab exchange.
Round nine: Body shots from Ozawa. Hall connects with some good counters. Both girls are landing well, but the early exchanges favour Ozawa. Hall is spending much of the round along the ropes, with Ozawa driving shots to her body, visibly lowering Hall’s guard and making her much more exposed to Ozawa’s hook. A straight right by Ozawa, is followed by a body shot from Hall, who then runs into a left hook. Ozawa is working behind her left hand. Hall’s return fire is less active as the round progresses.
Round ten: Hall staying busy with the jab and left hook in the early going. Ozawa connects with a leading left hook. Hall with a right to the gut and Ozawa counters with a body shot. Hall complains of a low blow of questionable veracity. Hall lands a right hand, and Ozawa a left hook before they clinch. Ozawa touches the body before the bell. Neither girl really stood out in that round. A visibly tired Hall limps back to her corner. In the opposite corner, Ozawa’s face is swollen —the accumulation of dozens of punches.
Round eleven: Hall seems to be besting Ozawa in an exhausting toe-to-toe exchanges during the opening minute of round eleven. Both girls dig to the body, with Hall landing peppering jabs in between. Ozawa lands a lead right, and Hall a right cross and then an overhand right. Both girls are arm weary by the second minute. Left hooks from both, but Hall's looks more potent. Low blow from Hall and would lose a point under normal circumstances, but she ends the round with a left hook, overhand right, and left hook at the bell as Ozawa sags against the the ropes in a neutral corner.
Round twelve: Ozawa starts the round by going to the body. Good combination from Hall and they trade until Hall ties up. A 3-2 by Hall lands before they clinch. 1-2-1 by Hall. Ozawa chips away inside. Body shot from Ozawa but Hall's defense is on point at the moment. Ozawa is throwing with bad intentions and connects to the body before they tie up. A tremendous right-hand smash sends the gum shield sailing out of Ozawa’s mouth. The sight seems to inspire Hall who proceeds to throw about thirty punches without reply before the bell sounds. Hall seemed to be dredging up all her own last reserves of power to make sure there won’t be a thirteenth round. And there won’t! Hall wins by technical knockout (TKO) after Ozawa's chief second, Emily Atack, concedes the fight prior to the thirteenth round.
After: Not content with the win, Hall advances on Ozawa, who is slumped on her stool and seems to make an attempt at ripping the latter’s halter off. Ozawa resists and a brief struggle ensues, much to the delight of the ceowd, before the pair are pulled apart.
Denise van Outen: “Kelly, that fight redefined the meaning of the word brutal. Have you ever experienced anything like it before?”
KH:”Not since the alcohol-fuelled escapades I ended up in on Friday nights as a teenager.”
DvO: “Ozawa’s corner through in the towel there. How close were you to quitting?”
KH:”After absorbing the shots she landed in the sixth, I knew that I was going to outlast her. I could see it in her eyes. ” DvO: “Ozawa’s team is bound to want a rematch. Will you give it to her?”
KH:”A rematch wasn’t in the contract, but I’ll give her one anyway. The result will be the same. She’ll have to wait her turn though. I want a shot at Gemma Merna or Kara Tointon now.”
DvO: “Joining us now is none other than another girl that could have joined that group. Ola Jordan, did you see anything there from either Kelly or Maria to make you worried?”
OJ:”Kelly, congratulations, but you wouldn’t last three rounds with a fighter like me. Put away Merna, Tointon and Maria again, and you and me can let our fists do the talking.”
