BEFORE:
"I'm not surprised I haven't been back here in a long time," says Ashlee with a smile. "After all, I single-handedly RUINED their hot flyweight prospect. But, give them credit for trying me again. They still won't win, but they get credit for trying."
"I'm not surprised that Ashlee wants to talk about something that happened five years ago," says Jane with just the hint of a smile. "It's a good way to take her mind off what's GOING to happen tonight."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Pieces of Me', and that can only mean that the singer of said song, Ashlee Simpson, is on her way to the ring..."
Cassie: "Hey, Mac, isn't Ashlee the SECOND most-famous Simpson sister?"
McCarthy: "Oh, NO! You aren't getting me started on THAT again...and you weren't even ON the crew back in those days, Scabbo..."
Cassie: "I do my homework. But, I didn't HAVE to to know YOU'RE the second most-famous McCarthy cousin..."
McCarthy: "You LITTLE..."
Tess (chuckling): "That WAS one of my better lines, BFF..."
O'Dell (sighing): "Simpson into the ring and helped off with the robe to reveal a red two-piece, and that's 'Pleasant Nightmare' by Alih Jey pounding through the arena, and here comes 'The Marin County Marauder', Jane Levy!"
Cassie: "As we've talked about before, Uncle Wiz is very high on Levy..."
McCarthy: "He was high on Spears, Jr., too, and you saw how THAT came out..."
O'Dell: "Levy into the ring and helped off with the robe. She's wearing that peach number we've seen before. And, the ladies are about ready. Let's get some picks. Tess favors Jane. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Simpson does it again. Ruins another of Wiz's flyweights."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "And, here we go. No surprise how this starts. It's Simpson using the jab and that reach advantage. She's awkward and a little hard to deal with, and that's being used to her advantage as well. Levy patient, working forward, wants to close. Moving the head and feet, looking to get past the jab..."
Tess: "That awkwardness you were talking about is what gave Jamie Lynn so many problems...took her time to adjust to it..."
Cassie: "As I recall, Stewart adjusted pretty quickly."
O'Dell: "Levy taking the measure of the taller blonde. Not overly busy, just probing the defenses for weaknesses. When she's able to slide past the glove she gets off in combination, but Simpson quickly moves back to range and gets back to the long left-handed poke. Ashlee's always moved well, and you can see that, despite being 31 and having not been in an FCBA ring in over three years, she still does..."
McCarthy: "Clear what her plan is. Same one she used on Spears. Work for points, build a lead, play defense late. Win on the cards."
O'Dell: "And, it's working to this point, because, while it's definitely competitive in there, it's Ashlee who's getting the better of things in the first stanza. Coming down the stretch now and Simpson backing and circling. Knows the round is ticking away. Not going to allow Jane to steal it with activity late. There's the bell, and, it's close to Ashlee."
Tess: "And, Simpson's got the early 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Into the second now and Levy getting a little more aggressive. She's coming forward a little harder and getting touched up for her efforts. Ashlee giving ground, baiting traps, playing that same game she played so well in this building against Jamie Lynn Spears. Levy wants to close and get her offense going, but can't get it done..."
McCarthy: "And, obviously, we're talking a lot about Spears tonight, but, there's no question about the similarities here."
O'Dell: "Certainly the similarities of situation, anyway. Levy continuing to press here in the second, and Simpson playing matador to bull. She's landing in combination as Jane tries to close, slowing her down, leaving her out there on the edge of punches. Levy taking a lot of fire. She's not hurt, but she's getting touched a lot..."
Cassie: "Needs to just settle down here and get back to what she was doing in the first. Work your feet, get past the defense, get some leather home."
O'Dell: "Needs to get back to better head movement, too. Right now, just a little too easy to line up. We're down to thirty seconds left in the second. Simpson cruising now. Dancing and legging in wide circles, snapping the jab. Again, she's grabbed the advantage and she's not going to let Levy steal anything late. There's the bell. Simpson wide."
Tess: "And Ashlee's now up 20-18."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third begins with a more retrospect Levy. Jane perhaps taking a lesson from that last three minutes. She's back to pressing slowly, working past Simpson's jab with a high guard and a tucked head, then going to work on the body inside. Ashlee quickly tying up when she does that, forcing a break, and getting back to jabbing range..."
McCarthy: "I like the body work here. When a girl wants to jab and box, getting into the rib cage is a good tactic."
O'Dell: "Simpson still managing pretty well with that jab, making Levy work hard to close, but Jane has those good feet, and she's using them to work her way into range and get right back to tenderizing flesh. Levy all but ignoring the head now after working almost exclusively upstairs last round..."
Cassie: "She's getting comfortable, Jenny. Definitely was out of sorts the first two rounds, but not any longer."
O'Dell: "But, give Simpson credit here. She's holding her own very well even as Levy gets comfortable. Ashlee's not a one-trick pony. She's making that jab work, forcing Levy to take fire to get where she wants to go. The difference is, Jane is getting there consistently in the third. Final seconds tick away and there's the bell. Close. But, Levy."
Tess: "And, Jane avoids that 3-0 hole and cuts the lead to 29-28"
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth begins the way the third ended. Simpson wants to dictate pace and distance with that jab. Levy wants to work in, work body. And, when Levy gets inside, she wastes no time getting going, thumping away until Ashlee ties her up and forces a break. Levy being very patient here, Mac..."
McCarthy: "She'd prefer a faster pace, no question, but Simpson controlling that, and pretty well, too."
O'Dell: "No doubt about it, and that's allowing her to stay right with Levy in what's been another close round so far. Jane slipping past the jab again, working some ribs and HURTING SIMPSON WITH A RIGHT HOOK! Ashlee wobbled with that right to the head and Levy immediately all over the blonde..."
Tess: "That was a NASTY punch, Jenny!"
O'Dell: "No question about the bad intentions involved in that one. And there are plenty involved in what's raining down on Simpson now. Ashlee backed immediately to the ropes and getting worked over in a big way. Jane staying sound, but definitely going for the finisher. Simpson hanging on, doing enough to keep the referee at bay, running clock, and she's going to get it run out. But, Levy grabs it wide."
Cassie: "And evens the fight at 38."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Levy looking to force the issue in the fifth, but Simpson back to the jab. Ashlee giving a little ground now, but seems to have her legs back under her, and Levy's learned a lesson here. She's not going to walk forward into the traps. Going to slow things down and work her way to her spots..."
Tess: "Wiz always talking about how smart Jane is, and you're seeing that now. It's not unusual for a young fighter to get too aggressive in a situation like this."
O'Dell: "It is not, but, that's another trap the redhead is avoiding right now. On Ashlee's side, she's back to controlling tempo and she's avoiding any consolidation or cleanup by Levy. We're back to good, two way stuff, with Simpson scoring from the outside and Jane doing the same once she gets to middle distances."
Cassie: "And, Levy back to working body again. Another smart move. Don't want to get away from that and go head hunting."
O'Dell: "Simpson tying up Levy again as the redhead gets inside. Jane shoves off, hooks some ribs, but Ashlee ties up again. We're coming down the stretch in the fifth. It's been a close round once again, and Simpson now legging late, once again taking away any chance for a late rally from Jane. Final seconds tick away and there's the bell. Close again. Simpson."
McCarthy: "And, Ashlee leads 48-47 at the half."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Second half of the fight starts on the same terms we've been seeing. Simpson using those good legs and that long jab to create distance, make the shorter Levy work to get into punching range. Jane moving very well. She's a former college athlete, as we've discussed, and you can see that pretty quickly by watching how smooth she is."
Cassie: "No question about it, Jenny. She just has to stay patient and she can get where she wants to get."
O'Dell: "And, again, she's wasting no time when she gets there. She's getting off in bunches. Simpson not trying to bang with her, just wants to tie up at the first opportunity and have the referee give her the space she wants. Levy shoving off some, but Ashlee able to wrap up fairly quickly most of the time..."
McCarthy: "This is something this kid needs to learn. How to punch and work free in there."
O'Dell: "It'll come. This is only her eighth fight. And, it's not like she's helpless in there. She's able to extend things to a point, but Simpson pretty slick with the ties, and definitely determined to keep the exchanges short. Ten seconds left here in the sixth. Levy lands a good right hand and there's the bell. Close to Jane."
Tess: "And, we're tied up again, this time at 57."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Seventh underway and the pattern set. Simpson going to jab and work for space while Levy wants to work at middle distance. Jane bobbing the head, keeping the gloves high, moving the feet well, getting past the guard, then getting to work on Simpson's body. Levy's invested quite a bit there, Mac..."
McCarthy: "And, it will pay dividends as we get to the late rounds. Simpson's legs aren't going to be the same in round eight or nine, and that will play into Jane's favor."
O'Dell: "Levy even more aggressive inside this round, shoving Simpson off as she tries to tie, wrestling around with her in there, trying to keep these exchanges alive. Ashlee determined to get a break, trying to trap the head and SHE'S ROCKED! Uppercut by Levy and Simpson hurt for the second time!"
Cassie: "Jane just wading in after her now, firing away with both hands!"
O'Dell: "And DOWN GOES SIMPSON! A rain of punches to the head and Ashlee crumples to her back! Levy quickly to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Ashlee staring up at the referee but not moving. Six. Seven. Simpson tries to sit up but flops back to the mat! Nine! TEN! It's OVER! And your winner by KO7 is 'The Marin County Marauder', Jane Levy!"
Tess: "Check the replay on this final flurry. Here's the uppercut that staggers Ashlee. Now, watch Levy just open up on her. Eight or ten punches in rapid succession there, most of them finding the target pretty clean and Simpson just crumples under the onslaught."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I've got our winner, Jane Levy, and, Jane, she gave you some trouble in there for awhile..."
O'Dell: "She got a kind of an awkward style and she has a lot of reach for the weight. So, I had to kind of get used to that."
Tess: "That last round, were you looking for the big punch, or did it just come?"
Jane: "Little bit of both. I'm ALWAYS looking for something big. You just can't force it. I just waited for the opportunity, then took advantage."
