BEFORE:
"Yes, I like fighting here at Asylum," says Jill with a smile. "Bazz is the one stable that doesn't give away a home field advantage here. And, that particularly applies to me...since I'm one of the few fighters who's never lost here. Ever. 3-0. And, one of those three was against Serinda. Don't get me wrong. We get along. But, tonight, the result won't be any different."
"Jill's tough to deal with," admits Serinda with a nod. "She very athletic, very quick, and she hits a lot harder than a light her size ought to be able to. But. She's not as athletic as me. And, she's not as strong as me. Yes, she got me the first time. But, tonight needs to be a different story. And, it's GOING to be."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that is 'Foxey Lady' by Jimi Hendrix, and here comes 'The Hottest Player In The Game', Serinda Swan..."
McCarthy: "I finally figured it out. She's referring to CURLING. Those Canadians are always playing that CURLING game, and Swan probably does that, and maybe she's the hottest CURLER in the game. Because, she CAN'T be referring to BOXING...since I'M in that game and am EXPONENTIALLY hotter than SHE is..."
Tess: "Are you DONE?"
McCarthy: "Not yet. Comparing her hotness to MINE is like comparing a MATCH to the SUN! Now, I'm done."
O'Dell: "Good, because Serinda is climbing into the ring to be helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve to reveal that red bikini she likes, and the crowd thinks she's PLENTY hot if that reaction is any indication..."
McCarthy: "Philly. LOW standards..."
O'Dell: "And, that's 'In The Hall of the Mountain King' by Edvard Grieg..."
Cassie: "Jilly WAGS! Jilly WAGS! Jilly WAGS!"
O'Dell: "That the lovely Jill Wagner of the Bazz Fight Club is on her way to the ring..."
Cassie: "Uncle Wiz, as usual, showing class here by giving Jilly Wags the honors, as she beat Swan the first time they fought back in 2012..."
Tess: "And, as Jill pointed out, that was right here at Asylum, where Jill is undefeated. She also has wins over Grace Park and Gemma Arterton here..."
Cassie: "The SAME Gemma Arterton who fought four-time champion Missy Peregrym to a draw yesterday. That's how good Jill Wagner is..."
O'Dell: "Wagner into the ring and helped off with the robe by the Bazz corner crew to reveal that zebra striped two-piece and another body that gets the crowd buzzing. Ladies about ready. Time for some picks. Tess favors Jill. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Swan's overrated. Wagner's no Palicki, but she beat Swan once. She'll do it again."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "And, we're underway. No surprise we're seeing boxing early. Both of these fighters are excellent boxers. Both have fast hands. Both move very well. Serinda definitely the bigger and sturdier of the two, but Wagner hits above her weight, as we've seen before, so I don't suspect she'll have problems on that score..."
Cassie: "She won't. Jill can hit with Serinda. There's no doubt in my mind about that."
O'Dell: "As you might expect, a lot of recon going on in there right now. The two fighters HAVE fought before, but that was nearly four years ago. It's going to take some time to renew acquaintances, so to speak, and both fighters taking the time to do that here in the first. Lot of jabbing, lot of movement."
McCarthy: "They're settling in at range, too, Jenny, and I expect that's where we'll see them most of the fight."
O'Dell: "You're likely right about that, Mac. The two brunettes both like the ranged warfare, and they're both very good at it. Wagner able to get some punches put together here late, starting to get into a little bit of rhythm. Jill bobbing that head, moving the feet well, lands a good combination at the bell. Close first. Wagner grabs it late."
Tess: "And grabs the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Right back to the ranged boxing here in the second. Lots of slick stuff right now. This fight looking absolutely nothing like Perry and Goodwin, but, for knowledgeable fight fans, it's just as exciting and just as fun to watch. There's some serious technique involved in all of this, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Lots of little things at work here. It's the cerebral game, where, of course, Mac The Knife has always excelled..."
Tess (chokes)
Cassie (patting Tess on the back): "Arms up, Tess. Did that water go down the wrong way..."
O'Dell (sighing): "Swan showing a bit of a change in the footwork now, using a jab step here to get some solid angles on Jill, and that's allowing her to put punches together better than she could in the first. Wagner able to adjust to that with a back slide step, get square on Swan and get her own combinations going..."
Cassie: "Definitely some very subtle things going on here, Jenny O..."
O'Dell: "Move and counter move. A chess match in bikinis..."
McCarthy: "Bikini chess. That might be a good idea for a new sports league. Or lingerie chess..."
Tess: "Lingerie...Cassie, get ready to pat my back again..."
O'Dell: "Last fight. Just eight more rounds and that nice bottle from Pointy's Spirits Cellar will be waiting for me. Thirty seconds to go in this one. Swan a SOLID combination. Best of the fight, but Wagner fires right back with one of her own. And now a BLISTERING exchange at the bell! Smiles exchanged after it rings and the brunettes turn back to their respective corners. Close again. Swanny."
Tess: "And, we're even at 19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Another adjustment by Swan. Stepping IN with the jab step now, cutting the angle, getting the left jab home and dropping the right off it. She's forcing Wagner to back up now. Jill looking to circle in response, but Swan stepping in to cut, getting square and getting some heavy leather on target..."
Tess: "This is good stuff from Serinda. Jill will figure it out, but this is a nice adjustment."
O'Dell: "And, it's working in the Front Streeter's favor in a major way at the moment. She has Wagner backing, trying to circle, but not being able to do it. Swan tossing Jill onto the defensive for the first time tonight. Jilly Wags scoring only in the counter now, but she's scoring some sharp shots. Wagner so precise. Very accurate..."
Cassie: "She can put a punch through any keyhole in the country."
O'Dell: "And the timing very, very sharp. But, still it's Swan getting the better of things. Serinda's getting to her spots and getting off in combination, forcing Jill to do too much covering up and waiting. Wagner in the round, but it's Swan who's controlling the round right to the bell. There it is. Third in the books. Swan."
McCarthy: "And, that makes it 29-28, Serinda."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth begins with Wagner on the move. Jill with a complete change of tactics here. She's jabbing a circling, forcing Swan to pursue. Serinda clearly a bit surprised by this, but, she's more than willing to play the footwork game and look to cut the ring so that she can bring Wagner to battle..."
Cassie: "This is something Swan's not all that familiar with, because there aren't a lot of girls athletic enough to do this against Serinda."
O'Dell: "Wagner looking like being one of them at the moment. Jill getting into a good rhythm. Moving the feet very well. Circling quickly behind the left. Stopping and popping on occasion, occasionally reversing the circle, but mostly staying in motion to her right, away from Serinda's power."
McCarthy: "Swan able to get to spots here and there, get off in combination."
O'Dell: "And, she's countering well when Wagner does stop to flurry. Serinda definitely in the round, but it's Jill who's suddenly getting more of what she wants. Twenty seconds to go here in the fourth. Wagner's built a bit of a lead here and she's taking it to the clubhouse, legging out the final seconds to the bell. Close. Jill."
Tess: "And, we're even at 38."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Wagner right back on her bicycle to being the fifth. Swan getting a bit more aggressive here. Looking to cut the ring, limit the movement, get back to the ranged boxing we saw in the first three rounds. Jill not having it. Very slick with the feet, staying in open canvas and ROCKING SWAN WITH A RIGHT HAND!"
Cassie: "Baited her right forward into it! Great punch!"
O'Dell: "And Wagner is all over the Canadian! Jill throwing barrage after barrage of punches trying to take Swan out. Serinda backed up, trapped on the ropes now, covering up as Wagner's getting off lusty with both hands. Swan tying up, getting shoved off, back to covering along the ropes and taking heavy fire..."
McCarthy: "She's doing enough to keep the ref from stopping it, but JUST enough."
O'Dell: "No question that Wagner's giving her a licking. Swan jabbing back a bit more as the round goes on, but Jill forces her to cover up again with another barrage. Ten seconds left in the fifth, and it looks like Swan's going to survive it. Wagner a solid right hand, but there's the bell. Jill, and very wide."
Tess: "And Wagner now leads 48-47."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Wagner right after Swan early, but she's getting some heavy counter fire. Jill looking to press the offensive, but Swan holding ground, banging back with the big guns. Wagner not going to stay in there and do that. Instead, she's back in motion, circling, jabbing, making Swan work the feet."
Cassie: "We've talked about how smart Jill is and you're seeing it. Swan is a big hitter. No point in trading with her when you have the lead."
O'Dell: "And, that's just what Wagner's likely thinking here. Jill wants to box, and she's going to force Serinda to move the feet and test legs that still can't be completely back from the last round. Wagner stopping on occasion to pop, but mainly staying in motion, wide, leggy circles. Really making Serinda work hard..."
Tess: "There aren't too many better athletes at this weight than the girls you're seeing right now...and you're getting a demonstration."
O'Dell: "Sure are. Jill just so limber and nimble, but Swan finding ways to cut the ring in spots, bring her to battle, force exchanges. Wagner, though, keeping them short, slipping away quickly, always making Swan chase. Final seconds ticking away and that's the end of the sixth. Close to Wagner."
McCarthy: "And, she's now built a 58-56 lead with two to go."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Jill right back to that movement as we start the seventh. It's not broken, and Jill has no intention of fixing it. Swan, however, looking to do a complete tear down. Serinda stepping in aggressively again. Not cowed by getting caught a couple of rounds ago. She's pressing Wagner and SHE ROCKS HER! Swan staggers Jill with a combination!"
Tess: "Not sure which punch in there did the most damage, the straight right or the left hook..."
O'Dell: "I'm not sure, either, but, together, they have Wagner wobbled. And Swan now pouring on fire from everywhere. Jill in an orderly retreat, but she's backed to the ropes and she's getting hammered. Wagner's head being rocked back and forth as Swan pounds leather off her high guard, ignoring the body the Bazz beauty has put on sale..."
McCarthy: "She doesn't care about body now. She wants a stoppage."
O'Dell: "And she may well GET one. Referee looking in as Wagner's doing a lot of taking. Swan looking and looking for the switch marked 'OFF', but she hasn't found it. Wagner hanging on, jabbing back in spots, running clock with solid defense, those athletic legs shaken a couple of times, but still holding her up. Ten seconds left. Swan one more flurry, but there's the bell. Serinda in a shutout, but Wagner still standing."
Cassie: "And, still on top 67-66."
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "And, now it's Swan wanting to press the offensive. Wagner going to cede canvas. She doesn't want a firefight here. Jill's legs still looking a bit iffy, so we're not seeing as much movement, but she's playing some pretty slick defense at the moment, dodging, ducking, slipping, using what legs she has in the effort."
Cassie: "Just wants to shake it and get back to what she was doing, which was winning her the fight."
O'Dell: "And, Swan wants to finish this thing right now if possible, but Wagner again doing an excellent job of preventing that from happening. Serinda's got the heat turned up to eleven, coming full bore after Jill and DOWN GOES WAGNER! A BOOMING right hand from Swan drops Jill to her right side!"
Tess: "That is NOT going to be easy to get up from..."
Cassie: "Jill's going to do it!"
O'Dell: "Count at three. Four. Five. Wagner rolls to her knees at six. Seven. Eight. Jill standing and falling back to the mat at nine! Wagner pushing to hands and knees again, but it's too late! The referee reaches ten and it's over! And, your winner by KO8 is 'The Hottest Player In The Game', Serinda Swan!"
McCarthy: "Palicki would have gotten up from that..."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Serinda Swan, and, Serinda, that was not easy in there..."
Serinda: "Never IS against Wagner. She's very, very good, as we've seen many times before. But, like I said, tonight needed to be a different story, and it was."
Tess: "What's next for you?"
Serinda: "You know what the best part of my weekend was, aside from this fight? Watching Decker beat Lima. Because that means that blonde bag of wind still has the belts. And I WANT them. I KNOW management is listening. You won't have any problem finding someone who'll sign to fight for the titles this time. Bring the contract here right now. I'll sign it. I've been waiting for years for a shot at her. Now. Let's do it now!"
