BEFORE: This fight was originally booked as far as December 2014 before various circumstances postponed it for almost 18 months during which both Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Odette Yustman held the unified lightweight title. However this isn't about the silverware but about Odette's determination to stick her foot in the Yvonne Strahovski rivalry door. Mary is well known for being Strahovski's toughest opponent of the current generation - confirmed by her making the Boxing World Magazine cover last month after another victorious high-octane duell between the two - and she's also handed Yustman her most painful defeat on Lioness Club of America's watch (KO4 romp in March 2013) which begs for nothing else than merciless revenge.

In fact Yustman has been knocked out only once since that last Winstead fight and allthough she remains a Top 5 ranked fighter by various experts, Mary is as tough match-up for her as she is for Yvonne Strahovski. This is a personal feud between two girls who believe they should get at least as much exposure as the Aussie blonde - if not more. Moreover LCA head coach Claudia Schiffer points out that Odette has never made the Boxing World cover so beating the woman who last graced the front page would be very suitable for the stable's own PR branch.

Round 1:
Odette swarms all over the older brunette and catches her by surprise in the early going; apparently beating Strahovski earns you no respect sometimes and when Mary's head snaps back after a piercing rally over the top, the two women tangle in a high-tempo slugging that allows Winstead to channel her allegedly superior punching power. However Yustman's twice as quick in execution and her jabbing drive makes the better impact reeling Mary back on her heels before a belting hook on the liver area sinks her into a tight cover. Odette tries to bully her back to the ropes but it's too early to break the Foxfire poster girl down just like that so the late clinch only serves as a brief calm before the proper storm.

Round 2:
Things heat up quickly in the second again as Mary settles into mid range jabbing and finally splits Odette's mitts to snap the black ponytail around; the younger brunette tries to enforce another close range tilt but fails to properly embrace the core strenght behind Winstead's punches and has to rely on her renowned bendy defence to stay out of trouble on the long haul. Her tactics vary from Strahovski's nose-tackling drill but she comes up short against Mary in similar fashion and is fortunate enough to escape the fellow brunette's wrath in the final minute when Winstead slowly but surely outworks her into the corner and misses a put away haymaker by the skin of her teeth. Yustman ducks underneath the outstretched arm and leaps back to center of the ring right at the bell... a very lucky escape indeed from the Lioness brunette.

Round 3:
More of the same in the third, Winstead dominates the mid distance jabbing series and allthough Yustman fends off the initial charge with bulletproof hgh guard, she gets belted on the body again with Mary's reach advantage starting to take it's toll. She seeks another ruthless pounding of the fellow actress and despite Odette's recent success, she thumps her straight up the middle to expose her as a vulnerable asset on the spot. Yustman wobbles back to her heels and this time fails to escape the Foxfire heat - she eats a clubbing left hand on the eye before a right hook squashes her lips and traps her on the ropes for good. The high guard proved meaningless as Mary romps to the gut and leaves Odette aching out her pain while desperately trying to lock another clinch in the dying seconds of a one-sided round.

Round 4:
Winstead shut down Yustman's famous bendy defence in the third but struggles to battle through the blatant clinching efforts as the Lioness vixen has no other ideas than to bide some time for now; the two women wrestle around center of the ring in the opening minute before Mary finally secures the separation but as she leaps forward with a hooking punishment she skims off the top of Yustman's head and gets clobbered with a vicious right hand on the jaw that immediately snaps her head back and trembles her towards the ropes with a loud gasp. Odette's eyes suddenly find a new spark and she jumps in pursuit; she cashes a left/right jabbing combo up the middle - before Mary can establish her guard again - and sinks the hitherto superior brunette with a belting drive on the guts. It's Mary's turn to seek a clinching respite in the final seconds but what's more important, Odette's back into this fight - slightly against the run of play.

Round 5:
Winstead is unfazed by the brief setback and looks to dominate the mid distance assault in the fifth again - only for Yustman to thrive on the new found confidence and dwarf the aerial attack with superior footwork skills. She dances around the Foxfire brunette and when Mary misses three hooks on the spin, she jumps in with a similar combo on her own and slams the older girl on the temples before adding another one of the navel. Mary is stacked in the center of the ring and lacks execution wholesale which enables Yustman to rip into her midsection and pound her back to the turnbuckle come the final minute. Winstead tries to punch back from behind the guard but gets shut down in close range and Odette punishes her liver area even further to leave the Foxfire entourage shouting in anger at the bell with Mary sagging a little and hugging her otherwise toned ab muscles at the bell.

Round 6:
This isn't the post-Strahovski victory dominance the Foxfire Boxing predicted and Odette just doesn't let go of her superior agility ordeal now that she's fully learned how to skip the mid distance tactics from her opponent. Mary looks more upset now and it affects her execution even further - she bounces off the high guard repeatedly in the opening minute and when she tries to close right up to the fellow actress, she gets clubbed by a quick uppercut drive that reels her back and enables Yustman to crash in with more jabbing menace. Allhough Mary applies the high guard, she gets belted on the body again and her cross hooking response fails to target the younger brunette's head which leads into a hectic power struggle in the center of the ring that eventually settles in Odette's favor. She dwarfs Mary's resistance through the repeated body assault and pounds her butt-in-ropes to close out the round - the grim atmosphere in the Foxfire corner indicates Winstead needs to find a Plan B here and find it fast!

Round 7:
Mary swings over the top repeatedly in the opening minute but that looks a little desperate from the cover girl and she doesn't really put enough heat on Odette who reverts back to her quick feet and simply lets the fellow brunette wear herself out. The response finally materialises in the second minute when Winstead's visibly annoyed already but the close range switch backfires into Yustman's face when she gets caught by a lurid hook on the eye and throws Mary a lifeline of sorts. Of course the Foxfire vixen is too experienced not to take advantage; she homes in a couple of heavy hooks on the temples and adds another one on the mouth that makes Yustman's lips bleed before stacking her up in the corner with her first meningful body drive for a very long time. Odette clinches her but remains trapped butt-in-ropes and even the late ribcage jabbing doesn't turn the tide anymore as Mary rallies into a much-needed comeback success.

Round 8:
Winstead swings more head hunting assault but as she keeps missing the big punch, she leaves herself exposed to immediate counter attack - finally when she misplaces her weight and wobbles forward after another wayward strike, Odette nails her on the ear with a right hook and adds a left one on the eye that tears the skin and makes Mary scream out in pain. Yustman bumps her off with a quick hook to the chest and then pierces the liver area to bend Mary forward into another uppercut strike that shuts the older brunette's eyes and sends her bouncing off the ropes... she tries to avoid the looming haymaker but her feet tangle up and Odette hammers her on the nose with a brutal hook from the right... AND THAT HIT CHOPS WINSTEAD DOWN... the Foxfire cover girl ragdolls to her left side with eyes closed and aches out all her tonight's troubles... she rolls onto her face at six but can only sit up at eight before slumping down on her backside again... that was simply too much to take and the alleged power superiority came through the back door after all... KO8 Odette Yustman!!!

AFTER: It's a mild surprise to see Mary so wasted here and she needs a few seconds to fully embrace the nature of this defeat. She was ready to enter the divisional title picture after her recent Yvonne Strahovski triumph only to suffer from long-awaited lioness revenge. And you can see how much this means to Odette who shouts repeatedly and pounds herself across the chest before trying to add more insult to the Foxfire injury. She has to be restored by the ref when she tries to kick out at the sitting opponent - poor Mary looks more disappointed then annoyed once she realizes the fumbled opportunity to really swing one at the current champ Brooklyn Decker - but quickly climbs the ropes and dwells on the crowd's wild reaction. This wasn't an ordinary ranking fight and everyone inside the MGM Grand knows that - despite being overlooked for years, Odette's as gritty and effective competitor as they come. Plus she can punch a ton... even if the Strahovskis, Winsteads and Perrys of this world will always be judged as supreme KO speciallists. The Yustman elite prospects keep looking extremely good and that's a worrying fact for the entire 130 lbs division.
