BEFORE:
"I knew she would be back for a rematch," says Elodie with a smile. "This is not her mistake. It is thinking this time will be any different than the last."
"The last time is the last time," says Leven with a nod. "We don't have rear view mirrors at Front Street. We shower off bad nights and move on to the next one. I'm looking forward. To knocking out Elodie."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Stray Heart' by Green Day you hear behind us, and here comes 'The Houston Solution', Leven Rambin..."
McCarthy: "The only thing SHE'S been a solution to is a Front Street winning streak!"
Cassie: "Well, those losses to Woodley don't look all that bad right about now..."
O'Dell: "Rambin into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve, and there's that bubblegum pink two-piece Tess could live without..."
Tess: "That color is AWFUL..."
O'Dell: "And, that's 'De L'eau' on the arena sound system..."
McCarthy: "Ditto? What kind of a name for a song is THAT?"
O'Dell: "'De L'EAU..."
McCarthy: "Da who now?"
O'Dell (sighing): "The SONG is called..."
Cassie: "Ask yourself if it's worth it, Jenny O..."
O'Dell: "The song...neverMIND. Into the ring is the lovely Elodie Frege, the singer of said song..."
Tess: "Frege, of course, representing the Latin Union, and, not only has she been to Asylum before, she's fought and beaten Leven Rambin before, which of course, is why she's coming out second..."
O'Dell: "And, she's getting quite the reaction in that purple bikini the crowd's getting a look at after she's helped off with the robe. And, the ladies are about ready. Let's get some picks. Tess likes Rambin. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Rambin's the bottom of even Weirdo's barrel. Frege beat her once, she'll beat her again."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "And, here we go. Elodie showing the wheels early here. As we've seen before, she like to fight a couple of styles. She'll go into the pocket or she'll fight on the move. Either style allows her to show just how slick a boxer she is. And, the answer to that query, 'How slick a boxer is she?' is "VERY'..."
McCarthy: "What...question...very...how slick...."
Cassie: "Truck, bring out a fire extinguisher. I smell SMOKE..."
McCarthy: "SHUT UP, SCABBO..."
Cassie: "Oh, wait, I HAVE a fire extinguisher right HERE..."
McCarthy: "DON'T YOU DARE!"
O'Dell: "IF we could concentrate on the ring, where Elodie is bouncing and jabbing, circling right, away from Leven's power. Frege quick, athletic and HURT! A right hand counter from Leven and Frege is wobbled! And now Rambin coming forward, backing up the French beauty with a blizzard of heavy fire!"
Tess: "This would be absolutely HUGE for Rambin. She got an early KO her last time out, and ANY kind of a follow up against Frege would be a major step forward for her..."
O'Dell: "And, Rambin's all about the forward motion. She's got Elodie nearly pinned to the ropes, hooking body with the left then coming upstairs with a straight right hand. Frege going into the pocket now, covering up beautifully, looking to counter as Rambin works to finish. Leven slowing down, taking her time, setting up punches. Been here before and not going to open herself up to Frege. Smart stuff from Leven and she'll win the round wide, but, there's the bell and Elodie lives to fight another day."
Cassie: "But, a great start for Rambin, and that's more important than the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Underway in the second and Frege immediately to the pocket, going to save those legs and get right back to the tactics that helped her beat Rambin the first time. Leven taking it slow now, working with the jab, trying to open Elodie up. The key here, Mac, is creating openings without creating them for your opponent."
McCarthy: "Exactly. The danger of going against a pocket fighter is always being too aggressive. She wants to counter and you don't want to make that easy."
O'Dell: "Rambin did much too much of that the first time around, but, not this time. She's being patient, working to slowly break down Elodie's defense. French beauty showing real skill here. She's been called a poor man's Britney when she does this, but, while she's not as good as Spears, she's pretty good."
Cassie: "Not as thick or sturdy as Britney, but the real advantage Spears has is the power. She's got top-flight bantam power and that makes her very dangerous on the counter."
O'Dell: "Elodie, though, scoring well here, creating misses, dodging, blocking, doing all the stuff that frustrated Leven the first time. Rambin not getting sloppy. Not getting too aggressive, just working soundly as we enter the final seconds. Ten remaining. Good right from Leven, solid counter from Frege and the bell. Close. Rambin again."
Tess: "And, Leven's up 20-18. Very good start."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third begins with the French beauty going to the pocket again. Elodie very slick in there, moving head, hands, feet, showing all sorts of angles to Leven. Rambin again taking her time, looking for openings, working the left hand. GOOD right hand counter from Elodie and Rambin wobbled!"
Cassie: "Put that right hand through the eye of a needle! What a punch!"
O'Dell: "And Frege off the ropes now, driving Leven back with a flurry of hard shot. Leven covering up, giving ground, taking tons of fire from the Frenchwoman. Elodie very busy and very accurate, landing a ton of leather. She's looking to put the American away here in the third round, no doubt about that..."
McCarthy: "And, if she does, Weirdo's going to have a roster spot open tomorrow morning!"
O'Dell: "Leven countering as best she can as Frege gets flurry after flurry off. Elodie on a major roll right now, gets Leven to the ropes, works some body to try to get the guard down, then goes back upstairs. Rambin shipping the punishment and staying afloat. Five seconds to go in the round and there's the bell. Frege wide."
Tess: "And, she's cut the lead in half. It's 29-28, Leven."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Back to work in the fourth and Frege coming forward against Rambin. Leven holding ground and banging back and HERE WE GO! We had a boxing match a minute ago but a BRAWL has just broken out in the middle of the ring! Frege determined to clean up or at least consolidate here, but Leven not having it!"
Tess: "This is good stuff from Rambin. She's a big, physical bantam and she's making use of that size and power right now."
O'Dell: "She is, indeed, but Frege very quick and very slick and landing shot from every angle imaginable. It's an absolute WAR in there as both fighters go to town. Neither girl abandoning defense, but this is just flurry after flurry, just exchange after exchange and neither fighter managing to back the other up an inch!"
McCarthy: "And, talk about good stuff, this is good stuff from Frege. We've always known she's a good boxer, but she's not the strongest bantam. She's standing in there right now, though."
O'Dell: "That she is, and she's holding her own in a slugfest with a hard hitter. Frege ducks a right hand, digs some body, lands an uppercut to the chin. Rambin a NASTY right hook to the ribs and a nice left to the head. Frege a BIG flurry and Leven answers back at the bell! What a round! Back and forth the whole way. Very close. But, Frege."
Cassie: "And, we're all even at 38. But, if we get many more rounds like that, it won't matter."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth round begins with the two fighters coming right across the ring and rejoining the pitched battle of the fourth. They're trading hard, accurate shots again, both determined to grab canvas and neither willing to cede any. GOOD right hand Frege, and Rambin counters with a hard left. Got to admit, Mac, I wasn't expecting this..."
McCarthy: "Like I said last month during the Perry/Goodwin fight, sometimes this needs to happen. Then, it was about proving something. Right now, it's about grabbing control of this fight."
O'Dell: "And, both girls locked in on doing exactly that. Frege backs Rambin up with a three punch combination and LEVEN ROCKS ELODIE WITH A RIGHT HAND! Frege's legs do a shimmy and Rambin all in now. Leven coming forward behind that hard left jab, backing Elodie up. Frege again to the ropes and the pocket..."
Cassie: "Leven needs to be careful here. Don't want to play spider and fly."
O'Dell: "And Rambin IS staying sound. Not going all in. Working to set up right hands with the left, still taking the odd solid counter from Elodie, but not opening herself up. Frenchwoman VERY slick in the pocket, very hard to hit. Leven getting some leather on, though, scoring plenty right to the bell. And, it's Rambin wide."
Tess: "And, Leven's back in front, 48-47."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Frege immediately into the pocket as we start the sixth. Again, this will give her legs time to recover and make any Rambin clean up very, very difficult. Leven back to the seige. She's playing it slow and smart. Showing a good deal of patience, limiting Frege's opportunities to counter..."
McCarthy: "And, while this can score you points and maybe win you a round, it isn't as likely to get Frege out of there."
O'Dell: "True enough,Mac, but, for the moment, at least, Leven seems content to score points, and that's exactly what she's doing. Frege working solidly in counter, but it's Leven who's controlling this round at the moment and THERE'S A STRAIGHT RIGHT FROM RAMBIN! Frege wobbled. Left hook, Rambin and ANOTHER STRAIGHT RIGHT AND DOWN GOES FREGE!"
Cassie: "Those were three BRUTAL punches!"
O'Dell: "And, Elodie just slides down the ropes and puddles at Leven's feet! Rambin quickly to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Frege grabbing the bottom rope. Pulling herself to her knees at six. Seven. Eight. Elodie with both gloves on the middle rope. Nine. She can't get any further! TEN! It's over! And your winner by KO6 is 'The Houston Solution', Leven Rambin!"
Tess: "Let's take a look at that final flurry. Here's the straight right hand that hurts Frege. Now, watch the left hook. BOOM! And, before Elodie can recover from that, here comes the straight right. On the button and down she goes. I'm amazed she got off the mat, let alone managed to get to her knees."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Leven Rambin, and, Leven, no question a big one for you."
Leven (nodding): "No doubt about it. Everybody's said it. This is a big year for me. I know I need to produce in 2016, and, to beat a girl like this, yeah. It was a big one for me."
Tess: "What was different than last time?"
Leven: "Lots of things. People forget, because I've been around a few years that this was only my 13th fight. The first two years of my career, I only HAD two fights. I still have things to learn. But, I'm learning every time out. I'm getting better. And, that's what was different."
