Intro: We're live in the O2 academy in the heart of Newcastle for this bout between two young ladies from down south. Poppy was signed to the Girls Friday stable in April and has reportedly been training non-stop for this bout. But a problem came up around when the fight could take place as a date couldn't be set while her fellow new signings Ivana Baquero and Maisie Williams were busy rearranging their bouts so they can get at their rivals instead of the opposition picked for them by management.
This seemed to put Poppy's bout on the step until a date could be rearranged but both women want this bout to happen now. For Tamaryn; it's a chance to get back into the ring as her reputation has not being one of a winner when you consider she's lost all three of her bouts up until now. Rumours from the Marti Maulers is that they see Poppy as a good chance of a first win for Tamaryn.
While Poppy has stated in interviews that she feels this is a chance to get rid of her own reputation of being a too friendly girl. Which isn't helped by her "Shannara Chronicles" fellow star and stablemate Ivana saying "she likes my big sister on set, if we argued, she'd be the one to come say sorry and hug me, even if she may have been in the right." Now it's fight night, Poppy is the first to enter wearing a black robe with a red poppy on the back, she looks tense as the Geordie crowd cheer her since the Girls Friday manager is from Newcastle and the stable is based there under his management.
Tamaryn looks at ease as boos rain around her and she just gives the crowd the middle finger salute with a red robe covering her body. As soon as she enters the ring heads straight to Poppy to get into her face, the two young brunettes go nose to nose and the ref gets between the two hard staring women to stop any early fighting. Slowly Tamaryn is the first to take her robe off to show a red sports bra, with matching tight shorts, boots and gloves. Red isn't a friendly colour around these parts when you count local rivals Sunderland and to a lesser extent Middlesborough. The crowd booing is deafening as Tamaryn plays up to the crowd by shouting I'm going to relegate this bytch like your team.
Poppy steps to the ring centre still staring bullets at her rival as her coach Lauren Berlingeri takes her robe off to show her attire of a black satin bra with matching satin shorts, black shoes and gloves. She puts in a specially made gumshield that's mostly black with a poppy in the centre. Tamaryn laughs at the show that Poppy's just put on and as they're brought together she says "come on Poopy, original much?" Poppy just remains silent as the ref says his final instructions and gets the women to touch gloves. As Poppy raises hers, Tamaryn just smirks and turns her back to show more disrespect to her foe.
10 rounds of bantamweight action ahead.
Round 1: Both women come out steadily bouncing on their toes as they circle each other to start. Tamaryn starts with a quick jab that's smacking off the guard of Poppy who looks timid early on. You have to ask is boxing really for her in these early moments but as she throws her own first jab to the gloves of Payne, she seems to loosen up a little and starts throwing her own punches. The pace won't set the world alight as they continue circling and throwing single jabs that mostly are hitting opposing gloves with only a few getting through to the others face. Half way through the round and Tamaryn seems to finally realise that letting her rookie rival get confidence is a mistake. She charges forward happily taking a jab to the face to land a good left/right hook combo around Poppy's guard to upset the younger girl who retreats. Tamaryn smirks as she charges forward again and the crowd are up cheering Poppy to get back at her instead of backtracking early in this fight. "Come on you bytch! Fight back!" Shouts the dominant brunette as she pushes Poppy onto the ropes and lays in some body shots. Lauren is shouting at Poppy to prove herself and fight back instead of being a sitting duck. The final minute sees Poppy throw shots in desperation to try and get off the ropes as it becomes a scuffy brawl. Both take some hard shots and Poppy's demeanor changes as she looks more committed to the fight and the crowd stand to cheer the brawlers. The bell rings with both women staring hatefully at the other and then chesting up again as they exchange insults before being pushed apart.
Round 2: Tamaryn again rushes Poppy, throwing wild punches that Drayton retreats from as Payne seeks to keep the pressure on her competition. Poppy is using her jab defensively as she seems worried about getting crowded to a corner or the ropes instead of pushing forward herself. The crowd are solidly behind Poppy as the two women trade a little more as the early nerves seem to be starting to disappear. But Tamaryn lands a hard hook that rocks Poppy's head and Drayton has to enforce the clinch to give herself a moment. "You're so weak bytch!" Says Payne as she bumps her body into Drayton's as if to send the message I'm stronger. Poppy bumps back and as the two are seperated, Tamaryn snarls as she hoped she'd break the rookie by now. Instead Poppy waves her rival on and Tamaryn rushes in again but takes a hard jab then hook that seems to wobble her at the bell.
Round 3: Lauren was heard lecturing Poppy between rounds not to let herself be pushed around against this ####! It seems to work a treat as Tamaryn tries to force Poppy backwards again but meets hard resistance as Drayton throws hards punches back that are rocking Payne. The two brunettes are unloading but Poppy is starting to show her hard training as she blocks a few punches. Then she counters with her own one-two punch combo that sends her opponent backwards to the ropes. A hard hook across the temple of Tamaryn sends her down and Poppy nearly roars her delight at the early knock down. Payne is shaking her head to get rid of the cobwebs after taking such a brutal accurate punch to the head. She's up at the 8 count and the ref checks her over to make sure she can continue, which she can to the delight of the fans who want to see her floored again. The bell rings to save her after the hard punches she's taken and she looks desperately to her corner for answers. Poppy returns with a beaming smile after the knockdown she delivered as Lauren pats her on her back.
Round 4: Tamaryn bangs her gloves together to try to send a message to Poppy who just stares back with her confidence starting to take hold. Again Payne thinks she can rush her opponent but is surprised as Poppy meets her head on. The two trade hooks to bodies as they get closer to each other and as insults start being traded. Even the normally mild tempered Poppy is slinging insults that would make a sailor blush as Tamaryn fires back just as readily. Again they clinch cheek to cheek and whisper into each others ears their feelings for each other, while right hooks thud into opposing kidney areas. Separated again, Poppy is suddenly the aggesser of the two and her quick combos rattle Tamaryn backwards into retreat for the first time in this bout. Both are snarling and grimancing as they trade again but it's oblivious that Tamaryn is getting the worst of it. The final minute sees the red gloved warrior getting pummeled to the body as gasps can be heard coming out her mouth and tears forming. At the bell Poppy goes nose to nose with her opponent as Tamaryn looks worried for the worst real time as the ref holds both women back. Poppy is pacing as her demeanor has totally changed and she's pacing behind the ref waving Tamaryn forward who almost charges past the ref embarrassed by this woman she sees as weak. Both coaches race out to pull the women back to their corners to get a much needed rest.
Round 5: Tamaryn comes out defensive now; trying to figure out how to get back into the head of Poppy. Problem is Poppy is so hyped now after scoring her first knockdown, that she unloads more hooks to the body of Tamaryn, who is moaning with each punch. She takes a knee to catch her breath from all the punches and even spits her gumshield out. Getting up at 8 again; Tamaryn gets her gumshield changed, her gloves cleaned and nods that she wants to continue. But that doesn't last long as Poppy lays into her again with looping hooks and Tamaryn turns her back, takes a knee and tells the ref "screw this, I'm done" The ref waves it off as Tamaryn is breathing hard with her head bowed down.
Winner: Poppy Drayton submission Round 5
After: Tamaryn heads to her corner looking sullen faced, her trainer looks annoyed asking "what the hell happened out there?!" Poppy is lifted up by Lauren to the loud cheers of the crowd who are just happy to see Payne lose as much as anything after everything she did coming to the ring. After both have their gloves taken off, Poppy tries to be sporting by heading over to the Marti's Maulers corner to see Tamaryn.
"Thanks for the fight babe" is all Poppy gets out her mouth before she gets shoved by Payne who shouts "how was I supposed to get a fair fight with these bums watching us, they distracted me!"
Poppy shakes her head and says "look I'll happily give you a rematch anywhere you want."
Payne says to her coach "just get me out of here before I throw up" the crowd boo her exit, which probably shows she won't be fighting here again soon.
Drayton for what she's worth, thanks the crowd over a microphone and signs a few autographs. She tells the media in the back that "she now knows what trial by fire is and knows that she can handle anything." That has to be seen but she has the 1 now on her record while Tamaryn continues with a 0 in the win column.
