(Girls Friday vs Free Agent)
Intro: The opening bout of the second weekend event of Girls Friday vs the ACB action sees Joan Smalls fight the debuting Toni Collette in what's been billed as a walk over. Joan is unbeaten after 2 fights and is still in the ongoing BBU welterweight title tournament to crown a new champion after Ericka Heynatz dominance in the division. Toni was the the Bronzed Oz boxing director of communications but was fired and replaced with Kylie Gillies 2 years ago. Since then she has reportedly been training to get into the ring but due to her age and lack of previous fights, she hasn't fought many takers. But with the welterweight tournament next round still being awhile away, Joan needed to be fighting and Toni seemed a very safe choice. In fact bookers had stopped taking bets as nearly all the money was going on Joan to batter the Sydney girl into retirement.
At the press conference, the height difference was noticeable straight away as Joan is nearly a full 3 inches taller than her opponent. But to give Toni's credit, she didn't back down as she stood face to face with Joan and wasn't backing down for anyone. Going to their seats, Joan looked as serious as ever, while Toni at least had a smile on her face to please the media in the room. Joan was told to speak first and she went to the podium looking regal in her stance as she stared over the room full of journalists like they should bow down to her. "I have come here simply to knock this old bytch out and keep myself in fighting shape for my next round in the welterweight tournament against Karen Gillan" says Joan before she struts back to her seat and stares daggers at Toni. Evidently Joan wasn't interested in long speeches but Toni wanted to make a statement alright as she stood at the podium. "Nobody thinks I have a chance to win, well let me be clear, I have two bricks for fists and if you think I can't take this overrated bytch down then you are dead wrong" Turning to Joan, she adds "you see me as just a tune up, that will be your biggest mistake and when I beat you, you can go crying back to Puerto Rico for all I care" The fighters are ushered together foe the final face off photos and both can be seen sniping verbally at each other before they turn to leave the stage.
Fight night in Sydney and Joan comes out to loud boos as she fights the hometown favourite and the massive underdog. She is wearing a black one piece swimsuit and has matching gloves and boots reminisced of the legendary Mike Tyson. She climbs into the ring looking sharp as she punches coach Taryn Terrell's hands to warm up for the fight. Out comes Toni to a loud cheer similar to the one that greeted Natalie Imbruglia the weekend before in this very arena. She is wearing a yellow one piece swimsuit with green stripes down the sides and has green gloves and boots to complete her look. For being 43, she looks in amazing shape from all the gym work she puts in and all the training for this debut bout. Coming face to face in the ring again, both look at the other as if "you shouldn't be in my ring" as one will be proven right tonight. The ref finishes his instructions by asking for a touch of gloves, that leads to both just swiping the others gloves and returning to their corners for their gumshields. The ref waves for the bell to start 10 round in the welterweight division.
Round 1: Off we go, Toni is trying her best with her jab to keep Joan back but quickly Joan strikes forward with a hard straight that stuns the hometown favourite already. Joan looks like she's mauling Toni as she knocks the older woman back with a stiff barrage of punches that has knocked the crowd into silence. Another hard straight pins Toni to the ropes as blood can be seen running from the nose of the local ams she is looking scared by the power she is being hit with. She manages to hang on for dear life till the referee can get between them and judging by the cruel smile on the face of Smalls, she really wants to hurt her opponent. A sweeping right hook across Collette's jugs seems to prove that theory before she slams a left hook on to the cheek of Toni. Down goes Toni, the crowd seems to be drained of all it's enthusiasm already as their girl seems totally overmatched by her younger opponent. But Toni does get up at 8 and is checked over by the referee to see if she can continue and even though he visibly has some doubts, he let's he keep going. Luckily for her there isn't much more of the round to go, the bad news is that she is getting knocked backwards with ease. At the bell, the damage is clear to see as blood runs from her nose and her lips, questions are being asked whether she is going to continue as Joan in the other corner looks hungry for a knockout.
Round 2: Toni proudly stands up, even as her corner warn her that they will throw in the towel at the very first sign of trouble. The fight does go on and whether Joan heard the exchange in the other corner or simply wants to make this quick, she is straight at her opponent looking to finish the job. Toni gets rocked to the body with several piercing straights before she bends enough to take a vicious uppercut that puts her down again. It's a massacre as even as the ref counts, Toni's corner is waving for the fight to be stopped and he obliges as it's clearly over.
Winner: Joan Smalls KO Round 2
After: Joan looks down at the knocked out wreck that is Toni Collette and doesn't show any remorse as the crowd start to boo her. Medics rush in to check on Toni and after several moments that have the crowd worried for their girl, she wakes up but is too weak to leave the ring unaided. Toni is stretchered out as the crowd hope it's not the end of her career already but she certainly won't be mixing with the young kids in any organization. Joan doesn't look bothered as she has her gloves taken off and ignores the crowd as she leaves without much fanfare anyway. In the back she speaks with the journalists saying "if that was a tune up then bring another ten of those on right now" Smiling for the first time since before the fight, she adds "I'll give Toni one thing, most people after a first round like that would just walk out the ring but she wanted more" She's about to leave when she turns back to the camera and says "I wonder how Karen Gillan is feeling when she watches that because soon it will be her blood on my gloves"
