BBU "THISTLE CHALLENGE"

BEFORE: Despite the heroics of Karen Gillan and the Mulheron sisters, Scotland remains an uncharted BBU market. Adding former national pageant winner like Nicola Mimnagh to the active roster should cure a problem or two up in the Highlands which guest BBU TV commentator Kirsty Gallacher fondly predicts during the pre-fight introductions.

We're at St. Mirren Park, Paisley as Mimnagh - Miss Scotland 2010 - is a loyal supporter of the club and was given a prime-time opportunity to make her BBU debut in front of a partisan audience. The football link doesn't end here, she was once married to former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty and boasts enough WAG background to become a future target for the likes of Sarah Brandner and Charlotte Jackson. Indeed, at 5'11" Nicola enters the ring at welterweight and some fans can imagine a clash of the titans versus Karen Gillan before too long as well.

With so much attention focused on the Scottish brunette, Su-Elise Nash receives a lukewarm introduction by the locals but vows to rain on Nicola's parade regardless. The former Mis-Teeq singer remains winless in BBU competition but travels all the way from London to pursue that ground-breaking success. She gives away a couple of inches in height but even Kirsty Gallacher doesn't really know whether Mimnagh's the second coming of Doutzen Kroes or perhaps Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Nicola Mimnagh wears a black & white vertical striped bikini and navy blue gloves. Long black hair tied in a sleek ponytail. Su-Elise Nash wears a red one-piece swimsuit with white trim and black gloves. Long black hair tied in a thick braid. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the welterweight division.

Round 1:
Nash blasts out of the gate trying to upstage the newcomer and Mimnagh shows little mobility to avoid the singer's jabbing rush that digs into her breadbasket repeatedly during the opening minute. Singers usually dominate the models/pageants in strictly footwork department but Nicola fends off more English heat by clinching the older girl and wrestling her back to the ropes for respite. She sits back after the command and prefers to air it out in mid range while Su-Elise doesn't have the speed required to enforce more point-blank comfort. Both women engage in a fruitless exchange with minimal contact thereafter but Nash leaps into one bonus drive before the bell yet and tags the Scottish chin late however Nicola shrugs it off and waves her glove right into the singer's face as the walk towards their respective corners.

Round 2:
The singer is the more agile fighter across the boards again but Nicola does a solid job weaving around on her feet and avoiding the big punch - that's if Su-Elise actually has any because Kirsty Gallacher in the booth questions that straight away. The St. Mirren crowd isn't used to boxing action so it becomes a little impatient over Nicola's low-key approach but since we're dealing with the welterweight reality, one-punch comeback is always a viable option and Mimnagh simply doesn't flinch here under the expectations. She continues to deliver the looping counterpunching drill from the back foot and stays well within her comfort zone as Nash goes hurry up in the final minute but can do nothing significant about the stubborn Scottish defence.

Round 3:
Fight Club UK's owner/head coach Katie Price didn't make the long trip from Brighton tonight but it doesn't seem to affect Su Elise's confidence much as she keeps hassling the local brunette still in search of that elusive BBU victory. She finally secures a solid connection to the body after faking an overhand double and stacks Mimnagh in the center of the right with more jug-busting half-uppercuts. The former Miss Scotland struggles to embrace the close range heat and tries to clinch herself into safety but Su-Elise rips her into the solar plexus and bumps back on her heels before smacking her across the mouth with a really fine hook that shuts Nicola's eyes and makes her wince in pain. A flurry of jabs follow and keep the younger brunette trapped on the ropes for remainder of the round however Nash just can't put her down for the count and looks visibly annoyed at the bell with Mimnagh not shaking her gloves in her face anymore.

Round 4:
Nash wants to underline her dominance with another uptempo start in the fourth but that height & reach advantage acts as Mimnagh's final security blanket and allows her to stay out of serious trouble during the opening minute. The singer becomes impatient in her pageant chase and that affects her execution badly as she skims off the forearms & guard far too often to secure that damaging strike and eats a looping counter response instead as Nicola finally shows some evil edge and leans on the front (left) leg to halt the looming English whitewash. Both women tangle in phone booth-like exchange come the final thirty odd seconds and Nicola actually stays on top of that one thanks to a series of body harpoons that stuff Su-Elise's attack for a change.

Round 5:
This is getting cagey now as Nash just can't follow through with her suprerior ammount of punches thrown and Mimnagh picks her off with surgeon-like hooks instead. The singer's head snaps back several times as the English babe finds it difficult to believe the Scottish model has anything to trouble her tonight UNTIL a left-handed bomb creams her lips into a swollen reality and triggers a sudden flurry of thistle leather. Nicola cranks it up and piledrives her way into Su-Elise's face resulting in a deep gash under the right eye before a swift uppercut finds the jaw and sends Nash backing into the ropes on the fly. The older brunette gets wrapped into a body assault that dominates the action in final minute and Mimnagh turns the tables on this fight simply cutting through the English midsection and pounding the hapless Nash into a standstill which draws a rampant reaction from the St. Mirren crowd. The singer is shocked by the rough treatment she received in this round but she can kiss that whitewash script goodbye now!

Round 6:
Nicola finally makes use of her superior reach in a damaging way on the long haul as she squares up to the singer and beats her for an overhand stinger that is quickly followed by a hook to the chest that cripples Nash in a significant way. The close range attire was supposed to be the FCUK veteran's forte but not when she allows the Scottish foe to romp clean on target as is the case early in the sixth with more thistle attack sucking the life out of Nash hand over the proverbial fist. Even Kirsty Gallacher is a little amused as Mimnagh gets all vocal in her jabbing & uppercut attempts that swallow Su-Elise wholesale and reel her back amid loud yelps. The singer tries to clinch herself into safety but Nicola wrecks havoc around her cleavage and loops more crushing hooks on the temple that Nash is unable to soak up without looking rattled... vert rattled even as she bellows out into a desperate earmuff late but still gets spiked to the body and Mimnagh has all the reasons in the world to shake her glove in delight at the bell.

Round 7:
Nash looks to weather the thistle storm and she could really use one of Katie Price's tips right now but she gets tracked down into the corner much earlier than even the St. Mirren audience anticipated and her slugging efforts are brutally halted when the pageant winner slams her with a left/right cross on the mouth before adding a nose-busting hook. Ugh! Su-Elise's arms collapse and with it the whole English pride as the singer slumps against Mimnagh's shoulders and gets ravaged to the body... it's like Nicola wants to chop her in half now and well, in fact she almost does... Nash yields resistance after a gut-checking drive renders her breathless and just SLIDES ONTO HER KNEES half-way through the round unable to withstand the Scottish heat anymore!!! Nicola boasts the biggest smile seen this side of Glasgow and urges the fallen woman to get up so she can punish her a little further. Su-Elise deliberately takes her time before finally getting back upright at eight but she's stacked into the turnbuckle thereafter and just picked off at will by the rampant model who seeks the coup de grace strike only to come up short. It's not that easy to blow a rattled opponent away on her debut but Nash's confidence is all but gone at the bell as she inspects her busted up lips and shakes her head in visible dismay.

Round 8:
Mimangh's not gonna let this one go as she tackles the slow moving English opponent with more gut-checking jabs that stagger Nash in the center of the ring again. A sluggish and otherwise wayward looping response ain't gonna delay the Scottish parade anymore as Nicola rips an overhand stinger on the jaw that wobbles the singer forward with another painful shriek before a hook on the nasal ridge makes her shout "Oh my..." to basically wave the white flag... Su-Elise stumbles to her left but Nicola makes sure that's her last move of the bout as she home runs her with a left cross to the ear... DOWN GOES NASH crashing heavily on her left side and that's a proper welterweight-like ending to the Thistle Challenge. Ref counts the singer out and Nash can only mumble her departure making no other attempts to even get back out there. KO8 Nicola Mimnagh!!!

AFTER: That's exactly what the doctor ordered for the thin Scottish BBU corps. Nicola might not be as highly-touted as the former 'Dr. Who' companion Karen Gillan but should find work easily given her obvious above par looks. She found it tough going early and Su-Elise is guilty of letting her off the hook but those come-from-behind wins truly help a fighter grow into this unforgiving celebrity boxing business.

Of course there will be more questions asked about the shape of Fight Club UK. Katie Price didn't even bother to make the long trip from the southern coast and Kirsty Gallacher wonders why on Earth is Nash kept on the active roster anyway? Apparently Sophie Anderton is the new darling down at the Brighton gym - nothing official yet though - and there's every chance Mimnagh actually tries to follow up on the FCUK welterweight contingent in the foreseeable future. For now she enjoys the St. Mirren Park's ovations and poses for the cameras with her foot placed on the fallen singer's hip. This will be a long night in the Paisley pubs but the Scottish BBU fanbase has earned their right for a rare celebration tonight.

Final result: Nicola Mimnagh def. Su-Elise Nash KO8.
