FCBA BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE BOUT
Before: The new champion Shay Mitchell seems surprisingly calm and collected as she meets the press. “I am looking forward to this fight,” she says, “as you know this will be my first defense of the title I won from Claire Danes. I wanted to be against one of the best bantams around and I don’t think anyone would disagree that Emily VanCamp fits the description. Although for someone as good as she is reputed to be, she’s only held the bantam title twice and the last time was 2 years ago. I have to wonder if she is now more legend than reality. Of course, it is reality that she went 17 rounds against Chloe Bennet, but is that a reflection of how good they are—or does it show it took Emily nearly 2 complete fights to beat Chloe. I just don’t think that proves she’s an overpowering fighter. Now I don’t claim to be overpowering, but what I do is win when I have to—as that other ‘legend’ Claire Danes found out when I beat her. I will do the same to Emily. That is a result that may shock people, but only if you think Emily is as good as she likes people to think she is. That’s something I’ve noticed about Lookout boxers—they have such a high opinion of themselves—that’s why it’s so satisfying to take one of them down.”
Emily VanCamp has been sitting down the podium table and developing the cold, icy glare not seen since “Revenge” went off the air. Shay looks down at Emily and smiles wickedly.
“Of course, Emily may have a different perspective, it’s your turn Ems,” Shay says leaving the podium for her seat.
Emily remains ominously controlled and calm as she rises and strides passed Shay to reach the podium, As they pass, Emily’s foot snakes and trips Shay, who falls flat on her face! The audience titters as Shay glares at Emily.
“Oops!” Emily says sweetly. “How different is the perspective from down there?”
“Not much—you’re still a conceited rear end of a horse,” Shay growls dusting herself off.
“That’s what your stablemate Troian Bellisario would say to me and you know that never turned out well for her,” Emily says. “You should have learned from her example.”
“Oh, I did,” Shay says, “and this fight won’t turn out well for you.”
“So you say,”Emily says arriving at the podium, “I must say I am disappointed in the lack of respect Shay is showing me. That is so unworthy of a champion. Fortunately, the title is about to return to someone who can properly represent it. Which will be, of course, myself. It may have taken me two years, but I am now about to regain the title and bring it home to Lookout Boxing, the Stable of Champions. The Punchers are an scrappy bunch of mediocrity. I must say they have gotten further than I expect given the level of their talent, but they do seem to hangaround and take advantage whenever a defending champion has a ‘off-night’. That’s how Lucy Hale did it at Flyweight and now Shay at Bantamweight. Lucy lost her title and so will Shay and by losing it to me, she will bring joy to the hearts of all my sisters at Lookout Boxing.”
Shay just shakes her head “No, you won’t.” Emily just gives her that “Revenge “death stare”.
The tension is still thick as the fighters gather in the ring. Emily is in a bright green one piece cut to show off her long legs. Suit features the gold letter EVC on the hip. Green gloves and boots with golden laces, plus her hair is in a tight battle braid. She pounds her gloves together and coldly stares at Shay. Shay in a red one piece, cut high in the hips to show off her legs. Red gloves and boots with black laces. Her hair is in a braid with red ribbons intertwined. Shay has made a point of wearing the title belt to the ring and posing in at mid-ring, then Troian Bellisatio comes and takes the belt away.
“That was tacky It makes me want to get that belt away from you all the more,” Claire whispers as she and Shay meet with the ref.
“Drop it, Ems, there is no way you get that belt from me tonight,” Shay says bluntly.
“Aren’t you the feisty one,” Emily says, “Troian been giving you ‘snark lessons’?”
Shay just smirked in a silent reply.
“Ladies, please—we have a fight tonight and I think the fans would like to get what they paid for,” the referee said sharply.
That allowed the ring instructions to proceed and get the fighters back to their corners. A moment later the bell rang to signal the start of the fight.
R1: Both fighters out briskly to midring where they waste no time in circling and punching. Nice footwork from both fighters, but Emily slowly getting the advantage. Emily working Shay’s stomach with a steady pounding. Shay trying to counter with some body work of her own, but Emily’s footwork making her hard to hit. Shay getting in close to ensure her punches strike home, but she’s taking a lot to the body from Ems, who is planting some nice uppercuts under Shay’s breasts to put some hurt on the undersides. Shay not liking this tries to shift her position and counter to Emily’s breast line. Some steady boob banging to the bell with Emily Vancamp emerging a close winner of the round.
R2: Both fighters again out of their corners with vigor, but now Shay is the one working Emily to the body. Emily losing some of that nimble stepping as she struggles to protect her midsection from the champ’s hard driving rights and lefts. Emily finally resorting the defensive jab to try to take some energy out of Shay, but Shay deftly slipping shots over Emily’s gloves to smack her in the side of the head, then a quick right bangs Emily’s forehead back and puts a little hairline cut trickling crimson. Emily frowning as she seems to be trying to work out the problem. Trouble is, she’s taking a lot of punches in the process. To no one’s surprise Shay Mitchell wins this round wide.
R3: Emily Vancamp continues to have problems with Shay Mitchell. Shay is back on the veteran with a steady attack to the body and head. Shay doing to a good of keeping Emily from figuring out a rhythm to the attacks. Emily’s jab doesn’t seem to be finding the champ and there is a growing look of irritation coming to Emily’s face. Time in the round is ticking by and Emily can’t seem to find a good answer of Shay’s steady attacks. Round ends in another wide win for Shay Mitchell.
R4: Emily Vancamp in close consultation with Lookout bantam trainer Julie Benz. Emily then comes off her stool and fairly flies across the ring to blitz Shay. Shay is clearly surprised by this tactic and eats smashing one-two’s to her face before Emily brings thundering hooks into Shay’s belly. Shay doubled up, gasping for breath, is rammed back into her own corner. Emily using her left shoulder to pin Shay against turnbuckle while using her right to pound Shay’s midsection. Referee has to pry Emily away from Shay and wag a finger in her face for using her shoulder to pin Shay against ropes. Emily nodding impatiently as she watches Shay use the precious extra seconds to recover. Finally the ref’s lecture is done and Emily can get at Shay, but the champ starts clinching hard (looks more like a bearhugs than a clinches to some indignant EVC fans and Shay is booed. She ignores them, stopping only when she’s warned by the ref. Emily punching really hard and makes Shay shudder whenever they land. Fortunately, for the champ, Shay increasingly able to keep distance between herself as the challenger. Emily working to corner Shay, but just as she finally gets her against the ropes, the bell rings. Shay escapes but she looks shaky as she returns to her corner. Emily looks after her with that icy glare of vengeance and then turns away. She knows she’s won this round wide.
R5: Emily Vancamp staking Shay Mitchell this round and she’s now getting good at it. Shay keeps finding the ring cut off by Emily and she’s then being steered to the ropes. Shay jabbing hard and doing all she can to be evasive, but she’s not got the nimbleness she had earlier and the punches Emily is landing (mainly to the body) are clearly draining the energy out of her as the round goes on. Then Emily makes a surge of punching power and the next thing Shay knows, she’s being pressed back against the ropes. Emily is using her head to press against Shay’s face as she bangs away at Shay’s helpless body! Then Emily steps back and Shay Mitchell slides down the ropes to land in a heap, arms wrapped around ravaged midsection.
Crowd is screaming “E! V! C!” as a smiling Emily goes to the neutral corner waving to her fans as she does so. Referee moves in to do the formalities, but he has just begun the count when Shay stirs and starts pulling herself up using the ropes behind her. She is glaring across the ring at Emily Vancamp as she struggles and as the count reaches “…NINE..!” Shay is fully erect and the referee waves a disappointed looking Emily back in, but after only a few punches., the bell sounds. Emily sticks out a foot and Shay goes sprawling .
“Ooops! Sorry!” Emily says as referee moves in for a stern lecture. The EVC fans are howling with laughter, but Shay Fans are booing. Shay just looks like she is glad to reach the safety of her stool after this round.
R6: If Emily was expecting Shay Mitchell as on the verge of being finished, she is quickly disabused of this notion. Shay is cautious and defensive, but it is a solid defense and Emily finds she can’t make much progress against it. Emily has to work now, trying to regain control of Shay’s movements, but Shay’s avoiding being cut off. Shay’s got a good jab too and it seems to encourage her that she’s getting some leather on her own on Emily. Emily then forces the issue, drawing Shay into a toe to toe battle, but Shay is taking up the challenge and hanging with Emily as the battle rages with both bodies getting worked over. Gradually, Emily’s body punches seem to doing the more damage and Shay retreats, but she jabs defiantly to the bell. Emily wins the round, but it is closer than many (perhaps including Emily herself) was expecting.
R7: Turnabout is fair play as Emily Vancamp finds out when the presumably worn-down, defensive-minded Shay Mitchell treats Emily to a blitz attack on her own. Emily’s jaw drops as she sees a fired-up Shay bearing down on her seconds before the champ’s first punches come crashing into Emily’s stomach with such force ringsiders can here the sound of the air being blown out of her. Emily doubled up and sent back into her turnbuckle. Shay now just pounding away at Emily’s head and face. Emily seems confused as she tries to break up the attack by clinching, but she is groping for Shay, who keeps out of range before plunging back in. Emily finally just blindly charges at her tormenter, Shay steps aside, but somehow Emily trips and falls on her face. Referee jumps in and immediately declares that was NOT a knockdown. Stern words for Shay from the official before he lets the fight resume. Emily plainly has had her bell rung and the best she can manage is to go face in gloves and let Shay ram her into the ropes. Shay gives Emily’s sides a good lathering, but Emily still on her feet at the bell. Shay’s fans cheer her comeback as Emily’s groan as they watch her stagger back to her corner all busted up and hurting.
R8: During break there seems to be some heated discussion in the Lookout corner about allowing this fight to go on, Julie Benz seems very doubtful, but Emily insists; “I am not going to quit in a title fight! You let me handle this!” So Emily is allowed to comer out, but almost immediately everyone can see what a mistake that was. Shay Mitchell, showing no mercy whatever, comes swarming in just hurling punches into Emily’s midsection., Emily doubles over, then toppling forward as her knees buckle. Shay takes aim and smashes an uppercut into Emily’s wide-open chin. Emily straightens out as she arches backwards and lands with a ring shaking crash on her head and shoulders followed an instant later by the rest of her body. Shay looks down at the shuddering wreckage of Emily Vancamp and then marches to the neutral corner with a sniff of contempt. Referee moves in and Emily does try to get up, but it’s clear her body is no longer obeying commands from her brain. She lets out a groan of despair just before the count reaches “TEN!”
THE WINNER AND STILL BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION: SHAY MITCHELL KO8!
After: Emily Vancamp revived and whisked from the ring, but Shay Mitchell doesn’t seem too unhappy about.
“Hey, I KNOCKED OUT EMILY VAN FRICKIN’ CAMP! What’s a Walk of Shame or Boob Smother compared to that?” Shay cries happily as Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson and Lucy Hale all gather around her. “She thought she had me in the 6th, but I came back and I beat the snot out of her! This just SO GREAT!”
No official statement from Emily Vancamp other than: “Ms. Vancamp was taken to the hospital for a purely precautionary examination. Nothing serious was found and she expects to resume training in a short time. She is sorry she disappointed her fans and she will do her best to justify their support with many wins in her fights to come.”
A real slugfest tonight and certainly one of the most dramatic comebacks we’ve seen in some time as Shay Mitchell seemed down and ready to be finished off in R6, but came back to devastate Emily Vancamp and win it in 8. Some pundits are wondering if Emily was truly recovered from that 17 round marathon with Chloe Bennet and she did seem to let this one slip away. Still, nothing should take away from an impressive first defense by the new champion. Future opponents of Shay Mitchell should study this fight carefully and see if they can avoid the fate that befell Emily Vancamp!
