BEFORE: The former ACB flyweight champion Penny Higgs enjoyed a fine boxing comeback when she stopped the highly-touted Maisie Williams back in September and she's been granted a Main Event outing in her hometown of Melbourne where she headlines the Wildetime Invitational tonight. As a pro dancer she was long rumoured to be targeting Ola Jordan of 'Strictly Come Dancing' fame and this match-up actually serves as a perfect springboard for the Polish-born blonde to advertise her skills as she remains saddled on the free agency market.
Girls Friday's decision to dump Jordan emerged as a massive shock two months ago, after all the 34 year old bombshell featured in a BBU flyweight title fight back in May 2015 but Sarah Cumming thinks Ola's age proved to be a deciding factor especially when the Newcastle based stable signed teenager Williams and Spanish hot rod Ivana Baquero to lead the divisional charge instead. Now Ola vows to beat Penny up and prove she's indeed a superior prospect to Maisie - regardless of the 15 year age difference between the two.
Penny Higgs wears a silver bikini top, light green knickers and golden gloves. Long dark brown hair straight. Ola Jordan wears a red & white vertical striped bikini, red knickers and white gloves. Long blonde hair in loose waves. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the flyweight division.
Round 1: Heavy slugging from the opening bell! Ola means business and tackles the local brunette with a crisp jabbing assault but Penny's wary of the threat and dances around those efforts before blasting an aerial attack that immediately connects with the blonde's face. Ola doesn't back off though but rips more shots to the body yet her head snaps back repeatedly and it appears her tactics are borderline suicidal at this stage. Higgs groans in her attacks however maintains superior precision and swivels the blonde's head back & forth which eventually leads into Jordan yielding real estate. The pursuit is very much on in the final minute and has the Cricket Ground audience on their feet! Penny romps clear to the body and signs off the opener with a quick hook to the jaw that leaves the Polish girl fuming at the bell.
Round 2: Both dancers keep going forward and Ola manages to soak up a little less punishment this time as she settles in the mid range briefly and fends off the initial counterpunching charge from the local brunette. Penny wobbles forward too much and eats a hooking combo on the mouth which then wraps her in a leather frenzy from point-blank range as Jordan steps up and delivers the brutal connection aimed at Higgs' face. The Melbourne crowd becomes a little concerned about that drive and Penny survives the second minute in a hectic clinch but she gets pounded back to the ropes thereafter and Ola traps her with more bombing hooks late in the going which now snaps the dark hair around Penny's neck and leaves her somewhat overwhelmed on the ropes come the bell.
Round 3: Ola keeps charging at the fellow dancer and secures another belting connection on the body. Penny fails to stretch her elbows again and works from the inside but the single hand assault aimed at the blonde's ample chest fails to halt the Polish run and dumps the brunette on her heels after a while. Ola cashes in upstairs again and hauls in a vicious combo on the temples before stacking the Aussie dancer with a quick slant on the chin. Higgs tries to adjust her footing but gets caught up in more punches slicing through her guard and bellows out on the ropes; another disappointing clinch allows her to survive the onslaught but both Sarah Cumming and Mel McLaughlin sound visibly downbeat in the booth and nobody can blame them as Jordan mounts a solid attempt to wrench the Wildetime Invitational whitewash script.
Round 4: Tania Zaetta is all over Penny's ear during the break but the Aussie tandem can do little about Jordan's uber-motivated approach. The blonde hauls in another jabbing drive that punishes the brunette's body and the up-tempo work rate actually sends the otherwise pumped Higgs into a tailspin which only fuels Ola's mean intentions. The local dancer bellows out in a hectic escape and Jordan briefly takes the bait as she looks for instant damage but thinks better off it as underestimating a dangerous opponent like Penny could derail all the good work she's done up to this point. The fight turns into a cat & mouse chase but the switch to mid distance results in the numbers of clean punches dropping badly and Sarah Cumming reckons that the Wildetime entourage must come up with a plan to somehow derail the blonde's confidence which proves to be the main reason behind her success tonight.
Round 5: Higgs refuses to go all-in and has visibly changed her approach compared to the opening two rounds; Ola being saddled on the free agency market raises more questions about the Girls Friday's decision but perhaps promoting Maisie Williams is worth the risk just like benching a healthy Tony Romo over in Arlington! Back to the main dish though, Ola keeps working from the inside and seeks body damage as she ducks underneath the overhand assault and almost headbutts Higgs in the breasts with a tremendously low approach. The ref breaks the close stride and earns the brunette a respite but the amount of pressure reels Penny back thereafter again and she only reverts into somewhat desperate swings while Jordan picks her off with head hunting galore inside the final minute. Higgs avoids getting trapped on the ropes but has little to smile about otherwise!
Round 6: Jordan begins to lose her temper and seeks that knockdown break-through; she hassles the brunette into another close range war of attrition but gets stuffed with a belting hook to the liver area and for once must concede the aggressive plan. However Higgs fails to make her pay and abandons the counter-attack which leads into a lenghty dink-and-dunk display that stalls the high-tempo script of the fight. Tania Zaetta urges the local dancer to pounce forward but Penny remains annoyingly hesitant in pulling the trigger and is fortunate enough that the Polish-born dancer settles for a similar low-key run towards the bell.
Round 7: Mel McLaughlin points out that these two dancers can outlast just about anyone in the ring given the chance and endurance becomes the name of the game but the Cricket Ground audience fears that Penny simply must be losing the fight on the cards and requires an offensive burst regardless of how well Ola's doing right now. The former Girls Friday operator digs into her experience and starts to tease the brunette into a more risky attack yet meets a stubborn single-handed response which looks fine to close out the deal but Higgs just isn't in a position to behave like that and earns herself another loud pep talk from coach Zaetta during the break. Ola notices the Wildetime camp is on the verge of boiling over in the opposite corner and displays a broad smile while nodding back to herself which becomes the focus point of the Seven Network's TV coverage. Sarah Cumming believes the fight can be turned around in the Aussie favor yet!
Round 8: Higgs finally goes off and moves into a heavy slugging mode that Jordan covers well with a stubborn high guard UNTIL she gets caught with a lurid left hook on the jaw before soaking up a double overhand combo on the lips. Penny screams in her efforts and rallies back to dump the fellow dancer on the ropes however she fails to switch her targets on the exposed midsection and allows Ola to clinch her on the minute mark. The ref quickly sorts out the stalemate and Ola beats her foe with a quick hook on the jaw while jumping to the left and making the brunette wobble forward in a hectic attempt to keep the blonde pinned in the corner. Higgs tries to turn to the right but eats a bursting hook on the chest and scowls in pain while Jordan delivers a clubbing double on the temples and traps the local girl in the corner instead. A flurry of body-checking strikes sink Higgs on jelly knees come the final minute and it's a disaster in the making for the home crowd as Ola rips through a stagnant opponent all the way through until the bell and Higgs is barely able to catch her breath anymore afterwards!
Round 9: Ricki-Lee Coulter pulled off the upset in the Invitational's welterweight clash but nobody inside the MCG expected Higgs to struggle so badly versus the blonde free agent. Harry Keegan conned everyone by dumping Ola to the sharks and now the Wildetime bunch learns about this the hard way! The Polish dancer lays into the brunette's guts from the bell in the ninth and stalls any recovery plans Tania Zaetta had in store for her fighter. Higgs dishes out single strikes that make no impact whatsoever and she can only clinch herself for survival as Ola keeps whacking her to the body and eventually traps along the ropes to remain on top of the action. Even the referee's efforts can't change the outcome of this fight and Penny does look tired after all the wrestling and shoving; only a KO punch can salvage her pride and no wonder that Ola's smile gets bigger and bigger as she watches the funereal atmosphere in the Wildetime corner.
Round 10: Ola doesn't want to attack her gassed out rival anymore and Penny just can't find a way to even land a solid punch on the retreating blonde. This is a tactical master class from the Polish-born dancer and Sarah Cumming just wishes this fight would be over now. The Cricket Ground remains faithful in support but during the final minute the whistles and jeers begin to mark the end of Wildetime's quest for a triple success on the night and for every Coulter-like upset, Penny Higgs will come to regret her lack of aggression that eventually put her behind the eight ball in the opening rounds. Higgs is out of gas at the bell but shows enough respect to clash gloves and hug the blonde girl when the clock expires. The Main Event verdict is ineviteable and spoils the Aussie party right at the death. Comes back UD10 Ola Jordan!!!
AFTER: Tania Zaetta and Kimberley Davies argue in the Wildetime corner just what exactly went wrong here but the lack of superior aggression must be the main reason why Penny suffered such a nightmare experience against a tough - but very much beatable - opponent. For someone who wiped the smile off Dannii Minogue's face back in the day, this was a complete howler and a visibly emotional Penny vows to make amends for this shocker while talking to Mel McLaughlin after the fight.
On the other hand Ola Jordan sends a big message to the entire BBU flyweight division that she's anything but done even after the Girls Friday axe seemed to indicate otherwise. She tells Sarah Cumming that Harry Keegan will regret pushing for Maisie Williams' and Ivana Baquero's signature and hopes to catch few other opportunities Down Under in the foreseeable future. However most of the ACB roster will take a close look at Penny Higgs' demise and one might argue if Ola finds enough girls brave enough to face her now. She might just be the most fearsome flyweight free agent outside of the American boxing scene!
Final result: Ola Jordan def. Penny Higgs UD10.
