(Team Canada vs Free Agent)
Intro: The opening bout of this card in Montreal is between Karine Vanasse and Heidi Reed as both fighters look to improve their early records to march forward in their careers. Karine has fought twice in her career and comes into this fight with an even 1 and 1 record, she did win on her debut with a knockout but hasn't fought in 3 years. Heidi meanwhile has had 1 fight and lost to her Poldark costar Eleanor Tomlinson by a ninth round TKO in September.
Both really need a win in this bout and it shows on both fighters faces as they interviewed separately on Canadian TV stations. Karine tells interviewers "Heidi looked decent in her debut I admit, but I want to prove to my fellow countrywomen that I am a star in the making and this is the return they should be watching" Heidi tells her interviewers "I don't know much about Karine, three years is a long time to get back into the ring but it won't matter, I want this badly, a 0 and 2 record isn't one you want on your record is it?" Laughing after that point.
Fight night and Karine is out first with Nicole De Boer by her side, the pint sized coach is waving the Canadian flag as they walk down to the ring. Karine is wearing a white sports bra, white trunks with a red Marple leaf on the right leg, she has red shoes and gloves to finish her look off. As she enters the ring to a loud cheer, Karine bows to each side of the ring, before heading to her corner to warm up and focus on her task ahead. Out comes Heidi with the flag of Iceland being waved by her coach as the crowd give her a respectful applause. She is wearing an ice cold blue sports bra and tbegin , she has white gloves and shoes to complete her look as she looks focused on her way down to the ring. Entering the ring, she nods to the crowd but looks over at Karine and the two fighters each other a hard look as all focus is on the woman across from them. Asked to come to the ring centre, both jog towards the referee and look each other up and down as they try to judge each other. After the instructions have been read out, both girls quickly touch gloves and get back to their corners to allow the referee to signal for the bell to ring to start 10 rounds of bantamweight boxing.
Round 1: "Ding" out come both fighters, each with their guards high as they measure each other up with stiff jabs in the early going. Karine seems to be landing the cleaner shots at this stage of the fight as Heidi's head gets buffeted back each time a jab lands. The fight picks up after a slow first minute, Heidi is the one to come on the attack hard as she throws some quick combos to shove Karine back a few steps. Karine sidesteps Heidi and lands a good right over the top of the Icelandic fighters guard to knock her out of her stride. Then it's the Canadian who presses forward, digging two hard body shots in to Heidi, before she gets caught with a short right hand to her left cheek and both fighters trade some hard shots in tight. Karine steps back to create some space between them but Heidi is stepping back into that space to land two cracking rights over the top to rattle Vanesse. Clinching up for the first time in this fight, Karine and Heidi land a few hard digs to the others kidneys with their right hands, till the referee steps in and separates the girls, he warns them to keep the fight clean. As they are ordered to fight, both stiffly hit each other with straight shots and they shake their heads to each other to tell their opponent that didn't hurt. Heidi again knocks Karine back with two good rifle like straights to the body, trying to wear Karine down seems to be Reed's strategy and you'd say a smart one when she has some serious ring rust on her. Late in the round and Karine fights back with a good combo to the head of Heidi but the last punch of the round is a stiff counter punch ripping through Karines gloves to her nose. The bell rings and both girls jog back to their corners, each is simply focused on winning as they talk tactics with their coaches and get cleaned up off them.
Round 2: Circling each other to begin the round, again Heidi starts off the more aggressive fighter of the two with some more good single shots to the body. Karine using her jab to dig away at the face of Heidi, trying to keep her from gaining any momentum and to control the tempo of the fight. At the moment it's having limited success, Heidi is still able to get to her body and continues to knock the older fighter backwards. Karine using her experience to step away from the ropes and duck the incoming hooks from Heidi, who looks frustrated that she can't pin her to a set of ropes. Both girls trade in the ring centre on the inside, working their way inside the others guards to bash the other fighter up. Again it's Heidi who takes advantage at this range, two hard hooks to the body make Karine gasp in pain and force her to quickly retreat. Reed is in control this round as she finally gets Karine close to the ropes but again is clinched up as Vanesse knows she needs to slow the pace down back to something comfortable for herself. Late in the round, Karine manages to land a good straight punch to the body of Heidi to keep her back now, she attempts to rush in to land something more concrete but Heidi times her to crack her across the cheek with a left cross that makes her blink alright. The bell rings after a good quick fire exchange but it's Heidi who looks more comfortable returning to her corner as Karine looks to the crowd for support, which they give her buckets full of to try and will her on.
Round 3: Heidi looks to keep control with her long range assault but Erica is slowly making headway, forcing both fighters into a brawl. The fight isn't a technical masterclass as each girl just let's breeze with her fists as the two girls try to tame the other. But Karine now seems to be finding some form as she works away to the body of Heidi and then lands a hard right over the top. The Icelander is pressed towards the ropes, both girls slugging it out as the crowd is loving what it's seeing from these two. Heidi manages to shove her way off the ropes to show she still has her power but Karine is back in her face with a right/left combo. Both girls clinch up as they nearly bump heads, that is how close they were fighting and try to force each other backwards in the grapple. The referee gets between them again and Karine manages to bulldoze Heidi to the body with her shoulder, then digs away with repeated shots. Heidi has to swing downwards and hope a shot can dislodge the girl digging away at her and luckily she does catch her across her right eye to get Karine to back away. Too bad for Heidi, the round hasn't got much time and she can't do much to try and win back the round after taking a beating to her body. Heidi looks pissed off as the bell rings, punching the top turnbuckle pad to show her disgust at herself for that round. Karine had to have her eye checked out as a small amount of swelling was forming under it from that desperation shot from Heidi in the round but she looked generally much happier now than she did at the start of the round.
Round 4: Heidi is met by a hailstorm of punches, Karine is in desperation mode and is in shock at what's happening in front of her. She manages to get a good straight in to slow Karine down, but the Canadian is looking to end the fight soon and Heidi shows rookie tenacities by trying to shove her opponent away instead of fighting with her fists. Heidi goes down! A right under her chin puts her down to the canvas as she looks shell shocked, she's almost asking the referee what happened but realises he's counting her out. She pushes herself to her feet to beat the count at 8 and waves Karine to come and get it as the referee checks her over. The fight continues but that punch did more damage it seems then she realised as Karine cracks her across her cheek again and as Heidi stumbles, the referee dives in to end the fight, waving it off for Heidi's safety.
Winner: Karine Vanasse TKO Round 4
After: Heidi looks upset that the fight is stopped but for all intents and purposes, she looked ready to take another trip to the canvas. Karine comes over to chat to Heidi and it seems to calm things down somewhat as Reed nods at her and bumps gloves with her. Both return to their corners, Karine hugs Nicole and apologizes to her for being moody in training, which gets a laugh from the trainer. Heidi looks distraught in her own corner as she looks down at the canvas and her coach tries to cheer her up. Both girls are ushered to the ring centre for the final announcement and Karine gets her hand raised to a loud cheer from her hands, while Heidi simply nods at her. Before they separate, Heidi says something to Karine as the two look serious, they shake hands and start smiling soon enough as they separate.
Heidi leaves the ring so Karine can celebrate, the Canadian is nearly bouncing off the walls as she let's herself get excited over her win. Climbing the ropes, she waves to the crowd on each side if the ring, till Nicole has to tell her to leave so the next fight can happen, which gets a laugh from the crowd. As Karine leaves the ring and enters the backstage area, the press quickly want a word with her, the list pressing question of course, what did the girls say to each other? Karine answers "I told her that I didn't agree with the referee either, Heidi is a strong girl and while I believe I would have finished the job, the referee stopped us knowing if that was fact" Then she announces "so I also told Heidi that I am woman enough to fight her anywhere, so it looks like I am heading to Iceland to fight guys, bring a coat I'd say" The journalists laugh but soon digest the news that we are getting Vanasse Vs Reed 2 in Heidi's backyard now, will that change the result. Heidi is sure of it as she tells the press later "I respect Karine for giving me this opportunity to get my revenge but I will be looking for my win and I aim to go through her to get it, no dodgy referee" So these two beauties will be seeing more of each other, journalists can't get word from Amanda Tapping as she is busy in talks arranging the rematch.
