BEFORE:
"Well," says Missy with a smile, "This is a bit of deja vu. Back in Philly to end the year with a fight against Leelee Sobieski, just like last year. And, I have no doubt this is going to be a close, tough fight just like that one. I also have no doubt about who's going to come out on top. Just like last year."
"Missy did us a solid last year," says Leelee with a nod. "There aren't exactly a lot of top-level fighters lining up to fight me, but Missy didn't hesitate. She never does. And, we had a great fight. I expect another one, just like she does. But, this year, I plan to flip the script."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Uprising' by Muse and that means 'The Polish Princess', Leelee Sobieski, is on her way to the ring..."
McCarthy: "I said this last year and I'll say it again. Weirdo should have his two REAL fighters on the card more often. He ought to push this girl to the moon at welter, Torv the same way at light, and have Brit fight bantam for him. I guess he could keep one of those worthless flyweights to balance things out, but the rest need to go!"
O'Dell: "Sobieski tapping glove to fist with Mac on the way by as usual. She's into the ring and helped off with the robe to reveal that black two-piece she likes, and that's 'Enough Is Enough' by Avicii you hear behind us, and here comes Lookout!'s own Missy Peregrym!"
Cassie: "Of course, we all know that there aren't many fighters in the FCBA as athletic as Missy. But, there's a lot more to the package. She's got plenty of power and she's a very intelligent fighter. It's no wonder she has a Hall of Fame winning percentage..."
McCarthy: "SPEAKING of the Hall of Fame..."
Tess (sighing): "Two fights in a row, BFF?"
Cassie: "We skated the first time..."
McCarthy: "IF you two will stop babbling, I DEMAND to know why I, the Greatest Fighting Playmate of All-Time, the Playmate of the Freakin' CENTURY am not in the Hall of Fame!"
O'Dell: "I hear you're on next year's ballot..."
McCarthy: "I AM? Well, it's about TIME! Now, everybody out there who's voting this year, Greatest. Fighting. Playmate. Of. All. Time! I deserve to be in! It's a tragedy of justice that I'm not in there right now! I'm the Shoeless Randy Jackson of the FCBA! This wrong must be righted! Vote for J-Mac in 2017!"
Cassie: "She's Jenny McCarthy, and she has no idea what that message was even about..."
O'Dell (sighing): "Missy into the ring and helped off with the robe. She's wearing that deep gold bikini we saw last New Year's Eve, and she's definitely in shape for this one. Ladies about ready to go. Time for some picks. Tess likes Peregrym. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Again, a tough one. Two good fighters. I'm going with Leelee to even the score."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "And, the last fight of 2016 is underway. No surprise that we start it boxing, as both of these ladies like the tactical game and they're both very good at it. Leelee's got the range and the power advantage, but, of course, as athletic as Sobieski is, and she's VERY athletic for a welterweight, nobody above 130 is matching Missy on that score..."
Tess: "And very few BELOW 130."
O'Dell: "Leelee all about that heavy Front Street Jab. If she can establish that, everything else will flow from it. Missy playing hard to find early. She's bouncing in and out side to side, making the blonde work to locate. Sobieski moving well as always. She's landing in spots, as is Missy. Plenty of action in the first, but not a ton of shell landing."
McCarthy: "Tactical stuff, as you said. Lot of recon going on right now."
O'Dell: "Definitely is. Neither fighter making a lot of commitments right now. They know one another, of course, as they fought a year ago, but they're still looking to get the lay of the land before deciding on disposition of forces. Ten seconds to go in a close first round. Good exchange there, and that's the bell. Tight, but Sobieski."
Cassie: "And, if this one is like the last one, every point is going to count."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second round and we're seeing more movement from Missy. Peregrym doing some bouncin' and misbehavin' right now. She's circling, popping the jab, making Sobieski work hard to square up. Peregrym then bouncing forward for a quick flurry before circling away again. This is good stuff from the brunette, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Sure is. She's got all that athleticism and she's using that to her advantage right now."
O'Dell: "Sobieski spending most of the round in pursuit. Staying sound, of course. Can't get sloppy with Missy. Not with the kind of power she has. Blonde resolute. Keeps coming. But, she's not finding Peregrym. Instead, the brunette is landing jabs, then popping forward for those combinations and slipping away before Leelee can get anything done."
Cassie: "Missy's really got the timing going, too. She's definitely locked in right now."
O'Dell: "Coming down the stretch and Peregrym in total control. Sobieski can't get off, can't get what she does throw on target. Missy's dominated this thing right from the opening seconds and nothing will change as we reach the bell. All Missy for the shutout win in round number two, ladies."
Tess: "And, we're even at 19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third begins the way the second ended. Missy on the move. Leelee stepping forward now, looking to cut the ring on the brunette. Peregrym slipping away behind the jab, but Leelee right back after her, cutting the ring, bringing Missy to battle, forcing some heavy exchanges and ROCKING PEREGRYM WITH A RIGHT HAND!"
Cassie: "How is Missy on her feet? That was a BOMB!"
O'Dell: "It was, indeed, and Peregrym shipped it, but she's definitely listing at the moment! Sobieski loading up the big guns and letting the shell fly. Missy forced to back and cover, trying to stay off the ropes, but doesn't have the legs to do it. Leelee pins her and goes to work on the body now, as Peregrym has the guard high..."
McCarthy: "Go back upstairs, kid! Get her out of there!"
O'Dell: "Leelee DOES go upstairs, then back down. She's giving Peregrym a thorough thrashing right now. Missy hanging on. Definitely in some trouble here. She's doing just enough to keep the referee at bay, but for how much longer, I'm not sure. Ten seconds left in the round and the brunette will make the bell. Shutout, Sobieski."
Tess: "And, Leelee's back on top 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Sobieski right back to the offensive. Missy still without the legs, and the blonde going to take advantage here. Leelee backing Peregrym up. Missy trying a fighting retreat, and she's able to land some in counter, but she's not going to be able to hold canvas. Blonde thumping away to head and body, landing some hard shot."
McCarthy: "Peregrym's got to hang in there as best she can, fire back, try to slow this down."
O'Dell: "That's exactly what she's trying to do, but this is a determined offensive from Leelee, and Sobieski's got Missy on the ropes again now, and she's again going body. Peregrym keeping the guard up, jabbing back. Leelee working up then back down. Blonde getting clinical here. In control, knows it, taking full advantage of it."
Tess: "She better stay on Missy and pile up everything she can now, because, just like Strahovski, Peregrym can come from behind to win."
O'Dell: "Certainly can. The job now is to last out this round, and it looks as if she's going to do that. Brunette taking a licking, but still ticking. Legs starting to come back now. She's sliding along the ropes, slipping away in the final seconds, back to open canvas. Five seconds left and there's the bell. Sobieski wide."
Cassie: "39-37 for Leelee after four."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Peregrym moving much better as the fifth begins. Leelee not going to keep pressing the offensive now. She's back to stalking, looking to cut the ring. Brunette circling, jabbing, again bouncing forward for a quick combination before slipping away. Sobieski stepping forward to cut, going body before Missy can slip away."
McCarthy: "Always a good idea, against a girl with legs like Missy, but, you're going to need to invest a LOT in a body like hers to slow her down."
O'Dell: "Missy bouncing, circling. Leelee stepping in and A GOOD RIGHT HOOK FROM PEREGRYM! That hurt Sobieski! And Missy now a BUZZ SAW! She's going all in winging punches at the blonde, sending her backward with a barrage of leather and DOWN GOES LEELEE! A straight right hand drops the blonde to her back!"
Cassie: "No one punch did the damage. It was an accumulation of a dozen good shots!"
O'Dell: "Missy to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Sobieski rolls to hands and knees. Seven. Eight. And Leelee's to her feet. Referee going to give her the mandatory and waive Missy forward. Brunette going all in in a big way, battering Leelee into the ropes. Sobieski hanging on in a high guard. Missy trying to finish, but there's no time left. There's the bell. Huge round for Peregrym."
Tess: "And, we're all even at 47."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Second half underway with Missy trying to finish this thing. She's backing up Leelee right away with solid combinations. Sobieski still trying to shake off the damage from the last round and the brunette not giving her time or space to do it. Peregrym using a ton of pace right now, Mac..."
McCarthy: "And, the thing about a girl who's as athletic and fit as Missy is, she can burn some gas now and still have plenty left for the rest of the fight."
O'Dell: "And, she is, indeed, burning some right now as she's working very, very hard, throwing loads of leather, keeping Leelee on the defensive. Blonde steadying things a bit as the round goes on. She's able to solidify her front now, and fire back. Peregrym still calling the tune, though. No question she's in control."
Tess: "This is exactly what I was talking about with Missy. No lead's safe. She's gone from 'in trouble' to 'in control' in just a few minutes."
O'Dell: "Coming down the stretch in the sixth. Peregrym bouncing forward, landing a good combination, circling away from Leelee. Sobieski turning with. Trying to get the left on. Ten seconds to go in what's been a one-sided sixth round. Another good, quick flurry from Missy and there's the bell. Peregrym wide."
Cassie: "And, Missy grabs her first lead, 57-56."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Seventh begins with Missy bouncin' and misbehavin' again. She's circling, jabbing. Leelee again stalking. She's stepping forward, cutting the ring, forcing exchanges. Peregrym firing back, slipping away. Leelee quickly cuts and closes again. GOOD right hand Peregrym in that exchange and SOBIESKI STAGGERS HER WITH A COUNTER!"
Cassie: "Again, how is Peregrym standing? That was a BRUTAL right hook!"
O'Dell: "Missy gobsmacked right now as Leelee again calls in the reserves and looks to finish this thing. Sobieski banging away, backing Missy up. Peregrym able to stay off the ropes for the moment, but she's being square up in a big way and Leelee is really teeing off on her right now, snapping the head back with some hard left jabs and following on with big right hands."
Tess: "There are some lightweights who could have taken what Missy's taken and still be standing. But, there aren't many."
O'Dell: "Not many at all. Peregrym now backed to the ropes with 20 seconds to go. Sobieski trying to finish this thing, but Missy hanging on, rolling with punches, keeping the guard high. Ten seconds left. Missy clinching. Leelee stacking her up and digging a little body and there's the bell. Shutout, Sobieski."
McCarthy: "And, we're even at 66. What a fight!"
ROUND EIGHT:
O'Dell: "Sobieski looking to consolidate now. She's coming forward hard, trying to bring power to bear. Missy's got some leg back, if not all of it. She's moving the feet, keeping the hands high, looking to fight in counter now. Peregrym showing fast hands, able to take advantage as Leelee punches, find holes in the guard, land solid shot."
Tess: "Leelee has to take advantage right now and grab this round. Cards are even and she has to remember the one-point loss last year."
O'Dell: "Certainly looks like she does, because, despite determined resistance from Missy, Sobieski's pressing the issue, continuing to force firefights. Missy holding her own in these, landing some very good shot in counter. Sobieski getting the heavy left jab on, dropping that hard right hand in behind it and DROPPING PEREGRYM!"
McCarthy: "Straight right hand caught her clean!"
O'Dell: "Missy dropped to her back! Leelee moving quickly toward a neutral corner. Referee's count at three. Four. Missy rolling to her belly. Five. Six. Peregrym to hands and knees. Seven. Eight. Missy rising and STUMBLING BACK TO THE CANVAS! Nine. TEN! It's OVER! Peregrym can't beat the count, and your winner by KO8 is Leelee Sobieski!"
Cassie: "Great fight. An absolutely great fight."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Leelee Sobieski, and, Leelee, another great fight between you and Missy!"
Leelee (shaking her head): "It was something. It's no wonder she's won titles in two weight classes. She's so quick and moves so well. But, then add in all that power she has, and, she's really tough to deal with."
Tess: "You got a bit of a lead there, but she came back..."
Leelee (nodding): "That's why I tried so hard to get her out of there. There's no safe lead with her. Nothing's safe until the fight's over. I had to go all in to stop her, and, fortunately, I did."
Tess: "What's next for you?"
Leelee (smiling): "Hey, I'm the proverbial girl with nothing to lose. Bring on 2017. Let's see what happens."
