BEFORE:
"I know what everyone thinks," says Gabrielle with a shake of the head. "They all think I'm done. Well, I'm here to tell you and to SHOW you that I'm not. And, when this fight is over, everyone will know I'm right."
"It's very easy," says Katy with a head shake of her own, "For people outside the sport to dismiss a girl. But, when you watch video and study what Gabrielle can do, you realize those people are wrong, and you'd better bring your 'A' game. And, I'm going to be bringing mine."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "We're back at ringside and that's 'I'm Real' by Jennifer Lopez and that means that the lovely Gabrielle Union is on her way to the ring..."
Tess: "I seem to remember that Union was here at Asylum once before..."
McCarthy: "We will NOT be discussing that tragedy of justice of an evening, Walmart! We will NOT! It's in my CONTRACT that that evening will NEVER be discussed again!"
Cassie: "Well, that was back before my time on the crew so..."
McCarthy: "Oh, don't YOU play innocent, Scabbo! Every time Weirdo comes up with one of his schemes, you're involved in it!"
Cassie: "Now, that's not true. Sometimes I'm involved. And, sometimes, it's actually my idea..."
O'Dell (sighing): "Union into the ring and helped off with the robe. And, absolutely ROCKING that sea foam green bikini..."
Tess: "She doesn't LOOK 44 years old..."
McCarthy: "Say it all the time. Nothin' but a number."
O'Dell: "And, that's 'California Gurls' you hear behind us, and that can only mean that 'The Santa Barbara Slugger', Katy Perry, is coming down the aisle!"
Cassie: "Perry currently the number one contender for the lightweight belts, and, if she wants to remain in that position, she'll need to take care of business tonight."
O'Dell: "Perry into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve. She's wearing that red number we've seen before, and the fans definitely appreciate it. Ladies about ready, and that means it's time for some picks. Tess favors Katy. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Well, it's been awhile, but Union DOES have FCBA wins. Gabrielle!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "There's the bell. Perry wasting no time stepping to. She wants to get physical with Union early. No question that would have been a good idea when Gabrielle was in her prime, since matching slicks and quicks with her was usually a losing proposition. Not so sure a girl as athletic as Perry couldn't do that now..."
McCarthy: "Union standing in and firing back here, Jenny. She's not going to be bullied around the ring."
O'Dell: "Definitely is not and there's a right hand from Union that got Perry's attention! Gabrielle a BIG combination that backed Perry up. Katy may be a bit buzzed here. That right hand was nasty and it may have the former champion a little wobbly. Union certainly has the younger woman on the defensive..."
Cassie: "And, she's taking advantage like a veteran does, piling up points, working head and body."
O'Dell: "No doubt about it. Coming into the final seconds of the round, and Union having it all her way. Gabrielle sitting down on a lot of punches right now, trying to put this thing away. Katy too sturdy for that, but Union is going to grab the first round going away. There's the bell. Gabrielle and wide, ladies."
Tess: "And, Union up 10-9 and looking like she can still compete at this level."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Union wants to press the advantage early, but, now it's Perry who's holding ground and banging back hard. Katy working body, head, body again, as Gabrielle does the same. Effort to impose will going on right now, and neither fighter having any success doing that. Perry backs Union up with a right hand, and Gabby fires a solid combination in response..."
Cassie: "Really heavy stuff being traded right now. Neither girl willing to give in at the moment."
O'Dell: "And both all about MAKING somebody give in. Some serious body work going on at the moment, as Katy PUNISHES those abs and Gabby fires back to Katy's ribs. I suspect you're going to have to make quite the investment in bodies like these to do any real damage, but the two lightweights are giving it their best."
Tess: "Perry is doing some SERIOUS digging in there. This isn't the normal M.O. for Katy..."
O'Dell: "It is not. Perry's more of a ranged fighter, was even in her brawling days, but, right now, she's ALL up in Union's grill, and Gabby's more than willing to have her there. It's about eighty percent body work as we head down the stretch. Union again backed up with a hard right to the head. Perry ducks a hard right hand counter and there's the bell. Close. Katy."
McCarthy: "All even at 19, but, if this keeps up, it's not going to be about points, it will be about survival."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Into the third and we're toe to to again as the fighters dig body and bang away. Definitely a contest of wills, and neither girl found wanting to this point. Perry a GOOD right hand that backed Union up a step. Gabby firing back but ROCKED BY A RIGHT HOOK! Union staggered and Perry just BOMBING her right now..."
Cassie: "This isn't where you want to be with Perry. She's got welter power and you don't want to be taking that and trying to hang on..."
O'Dell: "But, that's exactly where Gabby finds herself, taking heavy fire and being backed up to the ropes. Perry just POUNDING body right now as Union keeps the guard high. Gabrielle showing guts aplenty to take body shots like this and not lower the guard. Perry upstairs now, buffeting the head back and forth as she lands on Union's gloves..."
McCarthy: "Heady stuff from Union. Keep the gloves up. Let her use up energy banging away up there."
O'Dell: "Perry hooking the body, then splitting the gloves with a hard right hand. Referee looking in, as Union's doing a lot of taking, but she's countering enough to stay alive here. Gabby sliding along the ropes, moving the head and shoulders, playing defense, and she manages to do that right to the bell. Wide for Perry, but Union survives a scary situation."
Tess: "And, despite the big round, Perry's only up 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Perry right forward to start the fourth. She's working the left, dropping in rights, walking Union down. Gabrielle a fighting retreat right now, still not completely sure of the legs. Perry squaring her up pretty well at the moment, landing some hard right hands. Union countering in spots, but definitely getting the worst of things..."
Cassie: "Gabby's got to get those legs working. Perry's got the range now..."
O'Dell: "And there's a HARD right hand from Katy that sends Union back a step. Another flurry from Perry, and Gabby's covering up in the center of the ring. Union clinching now, but Katy shoves her off and backs her up with a hard combination to the head. Union trying to bang back, slow Katy down and DOWN GOES GABBY! A straight right hand from Perry and Union is down on her back..."
Tess: "You might want to start singing, BFF, because that shot was NASTY..."
O'Dell: "Perry to a neutral corner. Union actually bounced once before coming to rest, that's how hard she hit the canvas. Count is at three. Four. Five. Six. Absolutely no movement from Gabrielle at all. Eight. Nine. TEN! It's over! That quickly, it's over. And your winner by KO4 in one-punch fashion is 'The Santa Barbara Slugger', Katy Perry!"
McCarthy: "Lucky punch is all. Just a lucky punch."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Katy Perry, and, Katy, I have to admit, I'm surprised your strategy was to close with her, since you're pretty good at ranged boxing..."
Katy: "Well, she's always been a girl who could box and move, and, we know she isn't 25 anymore, but we didn't see any reason to play that game with her. I knew if it came down to physicality, I'd come out on top. So. I made sure it did."
Tess: "What's next for you? You're top contender, but your stablemate has the belts..."
Katy: "I don't worry about that stuff. I'll just get back in the gym and be ready for whomever management signs for me next."
