Olivia Munn vs. Natalie Dormer (Words: Front Street / Results: Loookout!)
BEFORE:
Pair of fighters who serve as prime examples of how crucial management is. Munn made her bones with Tech Unlimited and had become a contender when the stable closed. Instead of ending up on the ash heap, however, she was rescued immediately by Sceej Boxing and rewarded management with a run to the bantamweight titles. She's remained a top contender ever since. Dormer, on the other hand, went from never having had an FCBA fight to contender in a two-year run with Rampant Boxing capped by a win over Hall of Famer Britney Spears. Then, Rampant collapsed, Dormer was left on the outside looking in and managed exactly one fight in the next two years, falling completely off the radar. Things were looking mighty bleak for the Brit until Aegis International arrived and gave her a lifeline. And, Natalie clearly intends to repay new management the same way Olivia did.
"There's no question," says Dormer with the signature smirk, "That I'm as good as anyone in this division. Why ELSE did my phone stop ringing as soon as I became an indie? Well. I'm back, and I have some work to do and some scores to settle. Munn is first. But, not last."
"Oh, I remember when Natalie was running roughshod around the place," says Livvy with a stunning smile. "You'll note, however, that she avoided ME. That was very smart on her part. Well. Some time away has clearly made her stupid."
ROUND ONE:
Munn showing the trademark aggression early. Brunette wants to get physical early. Natalie's shown similar aggression at times in the past, but, she's a noted contrarian in most things ring. If you DON'T want to get physical, then Natalie does. And, if you DO, then Natalie doesn't. So, instead of trading shots with Munn, the blonde plays angles, pivots, bounces, slips and dips. She shows those slick boxing skills we saw so often back in 2013 and 2014. Munn, though, is a crafty vet herself. She knows how to find girls, and she finds Natalie, especially to the body. Dormer not at all taken aback by this. She's shown she can take it there, and that hasn't changed over the past couple of years. She's able to ship and counter, scoring pretty well for herself in doing so. Result is a close, two-way round in which Munn's aggression gives her just enough of an edge to claim the points and the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
Dormer getting the feel of this thing now. She's gotten Munn's timing down and that means she can disrupt it. And, that's exactly what the slick blonde does. Livvy's short. She's late. She's off by just a smidgen. Over and over again. She can't line the blonde up, no matter how hard she tries. And, when Munn's missing, that gives Natalie the openings she needs for sharp, clean counters. Quickly, what was a good, two-way fight turns one-sided in favor of the blonde. Dormer's giving Munn a butt kicking and there's not much a game Olivia can do about it. Again, she tries and tries hard. She works. She throws leather. But, much of it's not landing and what does isn't landing clean. Dormer, on the other hand, has the coordinates, and she's shelling them accurately. For three minutes, Dormer controls things, running up a big lead to claim the second wide and even the fight at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Munn finds Natalie. Not consistently. Once. And once is enough. Dormer dips the head directly into the path of a short right hook and the complexion of the fight changes instantly. Natalie wobbles and Olivia goes all in, pasting the blonde with hard right hands that drive her ropeside, then absolutely ABUSING her to the body with barrages of hooks and uppercuts. Dormer keeps the guard high, putting the body on sale, and Munn just keeps buying, thumping away at ribs, abs, and every other legal piece of flesh she can tenderize. Natalie screaming into her gloves as the round goes on, but the game Brit will not drop the guard, will not crouch, will not give Munn a chance to finish her. Late in the round, Livvy goes upstairs trying to do just that, but Dormer hangs on gamely and makes it to the bell. It's the brunette wide, however, and she's back on the lead 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Munn after Natalie early, but Livvy's aggression is just what Dormer needs. Natalie's got her legs mostly under her, and she's able to get back to slipping, playing angles, and countering, using Olivia's offensive against her. Munnster doesn't get herself touched up like she did in the second. Dormer's not recovered enough for that, but Natalie's able to slow the pace, score on the counter, and make the fourth a two-way round. About half way in, Olivia slows her efforts, realizing that the offensive has bogged down, and actually boxes Dormer some. This is something Munn can do and well, but it often gets lost in the brunette's patented aggressive power game. What we see in the second half of the round is excellent boxing on both sides, with plenty of head, hand, and foot movement and neither fighter really gaining much of an advantage. At the bell, though, Natalie's early work carries the day, and she's not only gotten back in the fight, she's evened things on the cards at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Munn fighting the slower pace now, boxing with. Not going to allow Dormer to take advantage of her aggression on the counter. Blonde OK with these terms. She's a good control fighter, and you're seeing it now, as she gives as good as she gets against a former bantamweight champ. Good, two-way stuff for two minutes, as Munn works hard to find Dormer. Then, she finds her in a big way. It's a pretty one-two, a left jab that lands hard and clean and a follow-on right that bangs in behind Dormer's left glove and NATALIE'S HURT! Dormer's knees give a shimmy and that's all Olivia needs to see. She's letting the gloves fly, battering the blonde, sending her reeling backward and then DROPPING HER WITH ANOTHER STRAIGHT RIGHT! Dormer crashes hard to her back and Munn, believing it's over, throws her arms up in victory. Brit not going to punk, though. Rolls to her belly, pushes up...and crumples back to the canvas. It IS over! And your winner by KO5 is Olivia Munn!
AFTER:
Munn clearly pleased with herself and everything else in the post-fight. "Well, you know," she replies when asked about pressure on her shoulders on this night. "You always want to go out and impress new ownership. But, if these guys know anything about boxing, and I know that they DO, then they know Olivia Munn is the best bantamweight on the planet. Just keep feeding me and I'll win fights for you, just like I did tonight."
