Sophia Bush versus Summer Glau (Words: ABC / Results: Lookout!)
Pre-fight: After continuing her fine form with a win against Jenifer Morrison earlier this month, Sophia Bush looks keen to make a real go of it this year. Standing in her way right now is experienced Summer Glau, who sits 7 spots higher on the rankings. We are set for a text book bout between talented bantams both seeking to be elite. Or in former champ Glau’s case, elite once more.
“Summer will be a tough challenge for sure,” Bush admitted, “but if you’re not challenging yourself, you’re not gunning for greatness. I’m expecting a great fight, and I know I’ll have to be focused and determined in order to match it with her in that ring, but right now I AM very focused and determined, and I feel I can bring my best against Summer. Which is good, ‘cause I’ll need to. And I want to get into a rhythm where, win or lose, I’m bringing my best against everyone.”
Summer Glau has similar aspirations, and she is not prepared to let Sophia stop her working her way back into title contention. “I said before blasting out Lyndsy Fonseca that I was going to work myself back into a title shot, and I did. I may have lost that, but I’m still as good as any woman in this division, and I’m going to blast Sophia to prove it. There is a reason that I’m the respected veteran and she’s surprising everyone each time she gets a win. Well, she won’t be surprising me tonight, and you’ll all remember that she’s second class when it’s my hand being raised.”
Round 1: Summer doesn’t seem concerned about her opponent’s recent streak or targeting of former champions, as she wades right in, ready to prove why she is still a top 30 Bantam. The testing jabs aren’t devastating by any stretch, but they occasionally find Sophia’s cheeks and sting when they do. Bush looks a little uncomfortable early, and it’s undoubtedly due to Glau’s pace and movement, easily dancing out of the slightly shorter Sophia’s range after each and every quick shot.
Glau keeps up the torment of her growingly frustrated opponent, jabbing and moving, and in the last minute even braving a few bigger shots, that catch Bush unawares and stagger her a little.
Sophia taking a seat after the first looking out of sorts, needing to get back into this mentally after an awkward first, her face stinging, a bit of a shiner starting to show on her left cheek already. Summer looks confident, almost smug, and very comfortable as she listens to advice and centres herself for round two.
Round 2: Glau looks calm and composed and seems to be playing mind games with Bush early, and enjoying it. Sophia gets fed up and rushes in with a haymaker, that Summer dutifully dodges and counters, now stuffing a straight right bang into the centre of Bush’s face.
Sophia seems to take a hint after that, covering up and playing things a little safer and more patiently. Summer still has the better of her, happy to wear her down and play mind games rather than land anymore big bombs.
It isn’t the most exciting bout just yet, but a very tactical one, and Summer is all over the mental game, at least in these early stages.
Round 3: Sophia and trainer Alyssa Milano having a keen heart to heart in between rounds, and sneaky Milano may have given her protégé a little idea. Sophia, completely unable to bring the fight to Summer through the first couple of rounds, waits, absorbs a jab, then another, and on the third stumbles, an apparent error in judgement that sends her tripping into the ropes. And as soon as Glau comes back in for a heavier left cross… BAM!
Bush was playing possum! Summer slips straight into the trap and Sophia cracks an almighty left hook against her opponent’s cheek. Now Summer staggered, but it is no act. Sophia leaps out of the ropes with a heavy right, left, cross combination, and Summer’s jaw is ROCKED.
Sneaky, but clever and effective tactics from the frustrated Bush, and suddenly she takes the upper hand, belting leather into Summer’s body, aiming to wear down the nimble starlet and slow those legs of hers. They sure look wobbly by the time the round comes to an end, and as Summer takes a shaky seat in her corner, Sophia marches over to hers, giving Milano a cheery fist bump. Plenty of work to be done yet, however.
Round 4: Summer has traded places with her opponent, looking rather annoyed now. She tries to keep her patience, jabbing and then stepping back, though her movement isn’t quite as graceful as it was three rounds ago, and Bush is catching her with the counter jab more often than she’s getting through guard now.
Perhaps a little doubt creeping into Summer’s game, who gives more space. Sophia happy to use it, stepping inside, moving well, popping hooks to body then occasional whack up to stinging cheek when the opportunity presents itself. Glau on the back foot and Bush happy to pursue, a tonne of confidence creeping back in and certainly Sophia has her rhythm back.
Summer’s abs looking a little red, and she’s forced to cover them late, giving Sophia a wide open shot with her left cross that bangs along Glau’s chin and wobbles her against the ropes! Sophia about to jump in, ready to blast the leather through her opponent’s lolling head, but the bell beats her to it, and Glau catches a break as we end the fourth with a promising fifth in sight.
Round 5: Sophia goes back to tormenting tummy, but Summer is tucking in elbows and guarding tightly, protecting that bright red midriff. The blocks are effective and Bush gets frustrated and shifts into higher swings for head, the first of which lands and snaps Summer’s head to her right, but then she ducks the second and responds with a rising uppercut that snaps under Sophia’s chin.
Summer follows up with a left cross through pretty cheek, then a right underhook to abs, and suddenly Bush is forced to try and retreat, the guard working back in. Glau pursues, jabbing away, a few stinging shots finding cheek or ear, but Sophia is able to avoid most of the serious attempts through the rest of the round.
Round 6: Sophia and Summer trading some text book shots early in the sixth. With Bush getting some heavy hooks to ribs and abs of Glau, while taking a few stinging jabs to bruising cheeks herself. Sophia getting the slight better of Summer this round as the two continue to trade blows and momentum. Sophia working over her opponent’s body and by the end of the sixth Glau is holding those ribs as she gingerly takes a seat in her corner, wincing and looking slightly less confident than the peppy Sophia.
Round 7: Sophia starting to look like a serious bantam chance now as she really takes control over her talented opponent. As Summer guards bruised ribs, Sophia goes high to jaw and temple, and when Glau moves her guard to compensate, Sophia hurts ribs some more.
Summer is hurting, the pain visible on her face as Sophia uses her like a human heavy bag. The attempts at defensive jabbing from Glau are met with solid guard, or even a parrying counter, and soon Summer is wilting against the ropes, Sophia pumping pistoning fists into her midriff, jolting the groaning, miserable Glau.
Just as Summer begins to slump, Sophia lands a deft uppercut through tired chin and Glau almost looks ready to keel over. Legs wobbly, butt in ropes, eyes flickering exhaustedly, Summer tries to hold her guard but it’s crumbling. Sophia lands head shots at will, bruising Summer’s lovely face and drawing blood from a cut on her right brow.
And then the bell.
Sophia is ushered to her corner unwillingly, looking frustrated at letting another opportunity go, perhaps not quite aware of the clock. By the sight of Summer though, it’s going to take her corner more than a couple of minutes to return her to commanding form. Sophia has taken a clear advantage now, but Summer is a warrior, and an experienced one at that.
Round 8: Summer valiantly guarding that cut cheek and poking with the jab, desperately trying to stay in this thing. Sophia happy to find gaps in the armor and redden the torso some more, really slugging away at the now sluggish Glau, who looks exhausted, pawing away with yearning offense when she’s able, but mostly just wobbling near the ropes with shaky arms in front to guard.
There is a hush over the crowd as they see it coming. Summer’s guard wilting, arms slowly lowering as Sophia hammers tummy relentlessly. And then the switch. Bush rocks Glau with a jolting left cross along the jaw. Summer staggering on the spot as Sophia bangs leather up high. Left, right, left, right. Summer’s head snapping side to side, body swaying. Then the straight right that slams into the centre of Summer’s face, getting a roar now from the audience in the arena as Glau flops backwards straight off of her feet, bouncing awkwardly against the ropes and collapsing in a heap at Bush’s feet.
Sophia is forced to step back as the referee gets to counting. There’s a sly smile there and it only grows as the official gets closer to ten. And there it is, Glau still crumpled on the mat, valiantly pawing against the canvas when the ten count comes, and Sophia’s arms are up in celebration.
Sophia Bush wins, KO8!
Post-fight: “Surprised now, Summer?” Sophia is asking, all smiles, clearly happy with that win, while Summer scowls exhaustedly, less than impressed with the result.
“I knew she would be a challenge,” Sophia nods, “but I think I met it head-on and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished here tonight. I feel like I’m going from strength to strength, and beating Summer really feels like an accomplishment. I feel like I’m moving forward with each bout, and this is definitely a big step. I felt great out there tonight. Like I was in control for a lot of it. Maybe not early, but once I got that rhythm, I didn’t once feel like I was going to lose. Not only am I here to stay, but I’m only going to get better and better, whether Summer and co like it or not.”
