Joanne Kelly versus Jaimie Alexander (Words: ABC / Results: Lookout!)
Pre-fight: While maybe not a high-profile bout, this certainly is a match-up of highly talented Lightweights. Jaimie Alexander has shot up the Lightweight ranks this past year since signing with ABC, currently sitting at a very respectable 16th, just five spots behind 11th ranked silent achiever Joanne Kelly.
“I think I can take her,” Alexander mused pre-fight. “Don’t get me wrong, I think she’s very talented. It’s just, I’ve studied her fight footage, and I’ve trained appropriately, and I’m very confident right now. I feel like I’m fighting great and I’m only getting better. Joanne will be a good test, being almost a top ten fighter. That’s a huge challenge in only my second year really, but I’m good for it. I’ve trained for this.”
“Jaimie is talented, there’s no doubt,” Joanne confirmed, “but she hasn’t fought someone like me. Well, she fought Odette, and lost. So, she’s still got a way to go before she’s elite. I’m not too concerned. I’ve been fighting at the top for a little while now.”
Round 1: Both talented, highly touted beauties giving each other a lot of respect early, cautious with the offense and tight with the guards. Jaimie has the heavier jab attempts at first, but Joanne blocking without strife and then works her own leather back against Alexander’s unwavering guard.
The first round probably has fans wondering whether this matchup can live up to expectations, as there isn’t a ton of action thus far. Of course, these two Lightweights know the other is not to be taken lightly, and it’s obvious early as they play the patient game, sussing out strategy that may work and minimalizing risks. The crowd almost up and about when Alexander launches a jabbing combo, but Kelly is on her toes and dancing across the ring and just keeping out of harm’s reach.
Nothing damaging landing, both ladies blocking tightly and moving well all the way to the first bell, and each takes a seat looking focused and fit.
Round 2: Jaimie trying another jabbing combo early in the second, and this time Joanne doesn’t back off completely, evading the first but then blocking the next two and countering with a wicked left cross that takes Alexander a little by surprise and stings her right cheek.
The crowd into it now as the talent starts to shine past the caution and the patience, and we’re seeing a few bigger attempts at offence, although most are stifled by tight guards, or even evaded with swift footwork.
Joanne earns a slight advantage with some clever counterpunching, but both beauties still look to be in top condition, and the feeling now is that these two are primed to explode.
Round 3: Jaimie leads with another jabbing combo, which Joanne moves to counter, and it’s counterception here as Alexander seems prepared, actually countering the counter attempt and ducking Joanne’s left to ram leather into abs and snap a cheeky uppercut to jaw that has Kelly staggering in surprise.
Jaimie pressures now and works those abs and ribs over without mercy as Joanne does her best to cover, but eventually only backing her opponent off with a defensive jab to the centre of face.
The crowd feeling better about things now as Jaimie Alexander seems to take some form of control, putting the hurt on Joanne’s torso with some punishing hooks.
Both beauties taking their seats after the third looking ready for more, but the smile on Alexander’s face is wider, and her breathing seems steadier.
Round 4: Joanne keen to swing some momentum back to her favour, and she does, snapping that lightning quick fist into Jaimie’s face as Alexander wades in for more body shots. Jaimie is backed up now and Joanne gives a couple of hooks to ribs just to distract before whacking the left cross hard through snarling Alexander lips.
Jaimie replies with a hook to ribs that has Joanne wincing, but Kelly ups the pressure while she can, pawing with that overhand left, determined to take Jaimie’s temple. It seems to knock her about a bit, and certainly swings the momentum back Joanne’s way, but Alexander doesn’t look hurt by any means, happy to cover towards the end of the round and let Joanne expend some energy thumping away at guard as the tight battle continues.
Round 5: Jaimie looking the fitter as we get five rounds in, and she is moving a little nimbler now, evading a few extra shots and countering with the jab that Joanne seems less able to evade now. Jaimie goes about wearing down her opponent this round, reddening the abs some more, but using the cross with more effectiveness now also, getting a woozy looking Joanne after a half dozen shots to cheek find their way through.
Joanne Kelly is shaking, legs wobbly as Alexander takes control of this bout and the whole crowd can feel it. Jaimie systematically wearing her opponent down now and Joanne looks exhausted in her corner after the bell.
Round 6: Joanne knows she’s tired and looks for a headhunting left, Jaimie just able to steer out of the way. Now Alexander comes straight back in, jabbing the right onto Joanne’s nose, bobbleheading her, and following with a mighty left overhand that crashes into temple.
Joanne wobbles, eyes blinking, and Jaimie’s right pounds straight between Joanne’s eyes, sending her timbering over onto her back, bouncing hard off of the canvas.
Jaimie happy to step back and watch a shaking Joanne Kelly try to roll off of her back as the referee gets to counting. Joanne almost gets to all fours when she crashes back onto the mat face first, and the official’s count wins this time. As does Jaimie Alexander.
Jaimie Alexander wins, KO6!
Post-fight:
“This is huge!” Jaimie exclaimed, clearly proud of her big win over the 11th ranked Lightweight. “To take down a talented boxer like Joanne, and feel confident and really damn good in the process, is huge. I feel a million bucks. Everything is coming together.”
Joanne Kelly was, expectedly, disappointed. “It was a tight fight, and I think Jaimie showed today that she really does have the talent required. I don’t think I fought poorly, I just think she took the opportunities afforded to her a little better than I did tonight. She really picks her shots well.”
