Charlotte McKinney vs. Karlie Kloss (Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE: Two of the top young welters in the world about to clash, and there's little hype necessary, but that isn't stopping either fighter from engaging in a bit of it. "Charlotte's supposed to be some JMDD phenom," says Karlie with a shake of the head. "Well, this isn't JMDD and that rack of hers isn't going to do her any good tonight. This is a welterweight fight, and, when it comes to welterweight fights, the phenom in this organization is ME."
"See, what Karlie doesn't get," says Charlotte with a devastating smile, "Is that it doesn't matter if it's JMDD, a straight boxing match, a fight at the Ice Hotel, in a sauna, on a cruise ship, in a box or with a fox. I'm STILL better and she's STILL going to suck canvas."
ROUND ONE: One of the questions leading up to this one was which Karlie Kloss we'd see. Because, while Kloss has plenty of power and can get physical when she wants to, she's also long and has great feet, so she's more than capable of boxing a girl. Would Kloss box or bang with Charlotte? That question is answered early. Karlie wants to box. She uses the great feet and the long jab to create space and makes Charlotte, who loves to use her considerable power, power that ranks above even Kloss', work to close. Early on, it works perfectly. McKinney's constantly left on the end of Kloss' jab, and Karlie lands some hard right hands as a result. Slowly, though, McKinney begins to solve some of this and get to middle distances, where she can bang her rival to the body and not allow her to extend on her punches. Kloss takes the worst of things from that point on, but, she's done enough early to claim the round close and get the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
McKinney getting to her spots. She's slipping past Kloss' jab and banging, body, head, body. Karlie's plenty sturdy, no question of that, but, if it comes down to a battle of bodies, there's little doubt she's in trouble against Charlotte, and that's just what McKinney's thinking. There aren't a ton of girls in the FCBA who are going to out-physical Kloss, but, McKinney's one of those, and, from the first seconds of this round to just about the mid-point, that's exactly what she does. Karlie, though, begins to adjust as the round goes on. She does some tying up to take Charlotte out of her rhythm, force breaks, make her work forward. It doesn't stop McKinney, but it slows her down, allows Kloss to get back in the round, which the taller woman does. By the latter stages, Kloss has McKinney frustrated, shoving off and protesting to the referee. It's good stuff from young Karlie, but not quite enough. Charlotte's built a lead that stands up and gets her the round close and we're even at 19.
ROUND THREE:
McKinney ups the pressure. And Kloss has zero answers. And, we mean zero. Karlie tries to tie up, and Charlotte wrestles and punches free. Karlie tries to use the legs, but Charlotte's plenty athletic, too, and stays right on her. McKinney works body, sits down on punches, gets as physical as it's possible to get. The taller girl doesn't exactly wilt, but she's nowhere near holding her own, either. As the round goes on, the body assault has it's effects. Kloss begins crouching. And, it costs her. A short right hook from Charlotte and Kloss is HURT! Karlie stumbling and staggering and now McKinney's all in. Charlotte hammering away looking to finish this thing early. The taller woman quickly driven to the ropes and trapped. And, from there, it gets REALLY ugly. An all-out assault on the head and body that leaves Kloss ready to go. But. She doesn't. She hangs in and hangs on to the bell. It's a shutout, Charlotte, though, and McKinney leads 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Charlotte continues the assault. Briefly. Did we mention that Kloss has quite a bit of power? BOOM! One punch, but a clean one landed with the feet planted and that's all it takes to completely reverse the course of things. It's a right-hand counter and it stops McKinney in her tracks. Charlotte wobbles and nearly goes down. The place goes crazy. And, now it's Karlie's turn to go all-in. Kloss fires bomb after bomb at a reeling McKinney, backing her to the cables and giving her a beating to rival the one Kloss herself took in the third. Charlotte hangs on desperately, leaning back into the ropes in a high guard, putting the body on sale. Karlie works some, but not a lot. She's looking to finish, play the short game, and working a body like Charlotte's is a long game indeed. Instead, the taller woman works upstairs, looking to find the 'off' switch. Somehow she doesn't. McKinney's great legs hold her up. But, at the bell, Kloss has tossed a shutout of her own, and we're even again, this time at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Kloss coming forward now. Karlie looking to consolidate. But. It's not going to work that way. McKinney holds her canvas and bangs back and we have a FIREFIGHT, ladies and gentlemen! There are few things in boxing that are more fun to watch that all-out shelling like we see in the fifth. Neither girl is willing to give an inch and both are determined to take as much canvas as possible. The result is a grim battle for control of the fight that leads to some serious leather being landed. Both girls clearly believe that, sooner or later, the other is going to blink. But, nobody does. These fighters may not have a ton of experience, but there are reasons they're already being talked about as elite welters. And, the power, sturdiness, and determination we're seeing in this round are among those reasons. For three minutes. Just all out warfare. And, when the bell rings, McKinney's not only stopped the Kloss offensive, but claimed the round close to grab the lead at 48-47.
ROUND SIX:
These two fighters are clearly demonstrating, both tonight and in their young careers, that they are not the kind of girls you see every day. So, while it's quite unusual to see firefights of the kind we saw in the fifth at all, and, even more unusual to see them last more than a round, no one could really be surprised when the sixth started the same way the fifth ended, with all-out battle in the middle of the ring. Of course, with girls who hit like Kloss and McKinney, these kinds of things simply can't continue indefinitely without...BOOM! This time it's a straight right hand from Charlotte that unhinges Karlie's knees. Kloss actually grabs the shorter woman and holds on to avoid going down. Charlotte quickly shoves off and goes to work with both hands, battering Karlie back into the ropes and savaging her to both head and body. Again, Kloss is ready to go, but, again, she doesn't. She hangs on to the bell, and, while McKinney grabs the round wide to lead 58-56, Kloss survives.
ROUND SEVEN:
McKinney now presses the advantage, and that's not been shown to be a good strategy so far in this one. But, Charlotte's looking to finish, rather than consolidate and it costs her. Oh, she has about 30 seconds of fun banging Karlie around, but, again, Kloss is able to set the feet and bang home a clean right hand counter, and, again, the McKinney offensive stops dead in its tracks with Charlotte staggered in the middle of the ring. Karlie switches gears instantly, showing that killer instinct that both fighters have. She gets physical with a reeling Charlotte in a big way, giving her an absolute thumping en route to the ropes, where a badly hurt McKinney has to see out the round. But, again, she manages to do so, despite the best efforts of Kloss. Karlie throws everything she's got at Charlotte, but, it's not enough. At the bell, McKinney's still standing. Kloss, however, has taken the round wide and cut her rival's lead to 67-66.
ROUND EIGHT:
Now it's Kloss pressing, but, again, Charlotte too sturdy and too determined. She again holds canvas despite the best efforts of her rival, stopping Karlie's offensive in its tracks yet again, despite certainly not having shaken off all of the damage from last round. But, she's shaken off enough to bang right back with Kloss, and, in fact, back the taller woman up with some heavy leather. In a fight where the advantage has swung several times, it swings again, and it's McKinney who's grabbing the initiative and impressing even more, if that's possible. With about a minute to go in the round, Kloss is in reverse and Charlotte's beginning to dominate her. BOOM! It's that right hand counter again and DOWN GOES MCKINNEY! Just a perfectly-placed right hand from Karlie and Charlotte's blown to her back. Kloss slowly, tiredly to a neutral corner. Referee begins the count. Charlotte rolls to her belly and pushes up to hands and knees but can get no further. It's OVER! And your winner by KO8 in an early FOY candidate is Karlie Kloss!
AFTER:
Stares exchanged across the ring, first between the Kloss and McKinney corners, and, then, when Charlotte's been brought around, the fighters themselves. It's clear that, while this is over, this isn't OVER. And Karlie acknowledges same in the post-fight. "I expect to run into her again, yes," says Kloss. "But, like I've said, there's just ONE phenom in the welterweight division of the FCBA, and it's ME."
