Serinda Swan vs. Emily DiDonato (Queen of the Ice Hotel) (Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE:
The Ice Hotel is back in the cold, cold Northern Hemisphere now, but the Queen is still the lady who took over back when it was down south, brunette beauty Serinda Swan. But, tonight, another stunning brunette plans a coup that will involve Swan going out the revolving door and a new queen, Emily DiDonato, on the throne. "Oh, I know this is my first FCBA fight," says Emily with a nod. "But, I'm a model, and Serinda will tell you that models fight ALL the time. The ones that can fight last. And, the ones that can't don't. Well, I've lasted since 2009 when I graduated from high school. I can fight. And, tonight, I'm going to knock out Swan and take this lovely hotel for my own."
"She's been modelling since 2009, has she?" asks Serinda with a smirk. "Been fighting back stage at all those runway events and magazine shoots? Well, I've been IN THE FBCA since 2009 and I have 33 more WINS than she has FIGHTS. If she thinks she's coming in here and running me out of the place in her debut, well, I have NEWS for Emily. And, it isn't good."
ROUND ONE:
Rangy younger woman wants to box, use the jab and the reach. Swan, giving up a little height and length here, still willing to play the game. And, the veteran quickly shows her wares. Emily DOES have a nice jab. It's hard and accurate and she knows how to use it. Only thing is, she can't find Swan with it. Serinda moves too well, the head and feet and shoulders and gloves. She's never THERE when Emily's glove arrives. Instead, she's somewhere just east or west of there, someplace where she can land a nice little combination. DiDonato game, but frustrated. She's active, but not scoring. She's trying hard, but not succeeding. Swan, meanwhile, getting into a nice little rhythm, controlling things more and more as the round goes on. By the end, Em's been thrown to the defensive. She's covering up and taking fire to the bell. There's no damage done, though, except on the cards, where Swan claims the first.
ROUND TWO:
NOW Emily's beginning to get the jab on target. She's quickly realized Swan's not just going to stand in front of her like girls at lower levels often do. This is the FCBA. You've got to FIND your opponent. And, Ms. DiDonato proves she can DO that. And, when she does, everything else begins to work. The younger brunette's biggest strength is her length, her range. She can cause problems for girls with that, if she can get the lead home. And, that's exactly what she's now doing to Serinda. Swan's getting stopped by the jab and set up for the right hand. It's not all one-sided, though. Serinda's landing her share, too. It's just that, now, Emily's in the fight. She's giving as good as she gets, and, as the round goes along, even a bit more. Confidence begins to grow with the number of solid lefts that land in the Queen's face, and, by the end of the second, DiDonato's pulled ahead and won the round, evening things at 19.
ROUND THREE:
DiDonato gets rolling. Swan a bit grumpy now as Emily's getting off first and putting punches together well. Serinda now thrown to the defensive again and again, reduced to the counter as the challenger's consistent, accurate offense begins to win the day. Swan sitting on punches, trying to slow DiDonato down with power, but Emily not punking. This is what she thought she could do to the older woman coming in, and, now that she's doing it, using her reach and athleticism to take control, well. It's all feeding on itself. It's like she's not in the ring at the Ice Hotel on an FCBA pay-per-view now. It's like she's giving a licking to a second-rate girl at a Chanel show. Only, this isn't a second-rate girl, it's a top FCBA lightweight. But, it doesn't feel that way, at least for Emily. She's having her way with the Queen, giving her the same kind of touching up she has so many lesser opponents over her years modeling, winning the round convincingly to take the lead 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Young Em gets a taste of one of the many differences between the FCBA and lower-level organizations. FCBA fighters can and do ADJUST. And, that's exactly what Serinda does. If Emily likes the terms at range, well, let's change the terms. Swan begins coming forward behind her own hard left, that heavy Front Street jab. Emily reacts as you'd expect. She uses the feet to try to create space. Won't work. Swan's too aggressive, taking every bit of canvas DiDonato gives her, getting in her grill, banging. Emily then tries to punch for respect. Denied. Serinda's the heavier hitter and she knows it. She's not going to be backed off by the younger woman's lesser power shots. The result is a sustained interior assault that slowly backs Emily up and leaves her taking a shellacking on the ropes by the end of the stanza. It's Swan wide and we're even at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Serinda's firmly in control. Emily can't keep her off and can't punch with her inside. It's grim stuff for DiDonato, and then it gets grimmer. Serinda goes body. In a big way. The Queen thumps the tummy, rips the ribs, bangs every inch of exposed, legal flesh, gets Emily bunching up, then punishes her with uppercuts. DiDonato has no answers. Yes, she's had lots of fights, but, she's never been in with a fighter like this. To her credit, the younger woman doesn't panic. She keeps working. She's even listening to the shouts from her corner that demand she tie up. She tries, but Swan's too strong and too savvy to allow that to work. She shoves Emily off, creating the space she needs to punch. Head, body, everything gets tenderized by salvo after salvo of leather from the Queen. By the end of the round, Emily's on the ropes taking fire again. She's got the guard up, trying to counter when she can, but, at the bell, she's been shut out and Serinda's back in the lead 48-47.
ROUND SIX:
Em gets a talking to in the corner, and responds by, well, clinching a lot better. There's still not much she can do to stop Swan's forward motion. She's unable to dissuade her with punches and she can't create space with her feet, despite her best efforts. The only option is to tie Swan up when she gets inside and prevent her from piling up the points and punishment. And, DiDonato's a quick study. She uses her long arms to wrap quickly and securely, working to tie up the head whenever possible. And, when Serinda tries to shove off, she holds on as long as she can. The idea is to force a break, and Emily is able to do so most of the time, breaking up Swan's offensive and her rhythm. Serinda still scores some inside, but DiDonato's able to score just as much as Swan's working forward. The result is a frustrating round for the Queen and a very narrow victory on the cards for the younger brunette, who's evened things at 57.
ROUND SEVEN:
Swan even more aggressive now, countering DiDonato's clinches with shoulders and chest shoves, knocking the younger woman off balance and punishing her when she is. Referee warns both women, Emily for clinching, Serinda for shoving, but neither pay him any heed. It's all about whether Swan can keep herself free to punch when she gets to where she wants to be, and, mostly, she can. Em's taking heavy fire for the first half of the round, but, she's game, banging back when she can, holding on and trying to force breaks when she can't. But, the Queen is in control. She's getting the work done and roughing the younger woman up. About two minutes in, things go from bad to worse for DiDonato. A short right hook staggers the younger woman and Swan follows with a vicious three-punch flurry to the head that sends Emily crashing to the canvas on her back! Swan takes just a second to stare down at the stunned supermodel, then turns back to a neutral corner and watches as DiDonato feebly tries to get to her feet. She can't come close. It's OVER. And your winner by KO7 and STILL Queen of the Ice Hotel is Serinda Swan!
AFTER:
DiDonato's people know the drill. They hustle their still-wobbly fighter through the revolving doors and out of the hotel as quickly as possible. For her part, Swan acknowledges that her vanquished challenger showed plenty of fight. "She has potential," says Serinda with a nod. "Give her some work and good management and maybe she'll own this hotel someday. But. Not today. And, not anytime soon."
