POPPY DRAYTON VS LAURA VANDERVOORT
Results: Lookout Writing: Archer
Poppy: 25 YO, 5’6 (1.68 m), FCBA: 3-0-0 since 2016, Girls Friday
Laura: 32 YO, 5’7 (1/70 m); 32-31-02 since 2007, Foxfire Boxing
Before: Brit boxer Poppy Drayton seems eager to take on her biggest FCBA challenge to date. As she tells the press at the pre-fight: “Everybody told me Leven Rambin, Caity Lotz and that new girl Kyra Santoro would be tough to beat. Well, as you know, I beat them. Now I am willing to believe that Laura here really will be tough. After all, she’s been around quite a long time, but it’s not always easy I am sure. After she’s lost to 3 newcomers in a row Melissa Benoist, Daisy Ridley and Kaya Scodelario. I feel I can at least do as well against her as they did.”
Laura Vandervoort sitting there with red spots of anger on her cheek giving Poppy her iciest glare. (Poppy just smiles at Laura’s discomfort and the red spots on the blonde’s cheeks grow). Laura stomping to the the podium when her turn comes.
“I thought Poppy Drayton would at least be polite when I called her out. It appears I was expecting too much,” Laura snaps. “Though I do appreciate her going to the trouble of looking up my record. I am sure reading is a strain for her.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Poppy asks sharply.
Laura rolls her eyes: “I can see subtlety is not one of your strong points. I am suggesting that you have trouble reading anything more than a grade school reader. Tell me dear, do you have someone read your scripts aloud or do you muddle through on your own?”
“Are you calling me ‘stupid’?” Poppy cries in outrage.
“I am suggesting it,” Laura says, smiling now that she has the younger woman upset. “But keep talking, I am sure you’ll prove it.”
Poppy leaps to her feet and storms up to Laura: “How dare you speak to me like that you—you—HAS BEEN!”
Laura’s hand flicks out in a well practiced slap that has Poppy starring at her in disbelief: “You SLAPPED ME! IN THE FACE!”
“I take it back,” Laura mocks, “you’re not as stupid as I thought.”
Poppy then gives Laura a slap that knocks Laura into the podium. Laura seems surprised at Poppy who stands there, chest heaving, fists up.
“Well, if you want to start now—you’re on!” Laura says and gives Poppy another slap across the face.
Poppy shrieks with fury and tackles Laura. Down they go onto the stage in a crash. They are both wearing white blouses and above-the-knee shirts. The blouses are torn open to reveal Laura’s white satin bra and Poppy’s pale pink bra. These can only be glimpsed by the press who rush to the stage trying to get pictures. They roll around, skirts hiked up to mid-thigh as they legs become entangled. Also entangled are their handsw in each other’s hair as they try banging heads against the stage.
Then they are on their knees, hands away from hair, but slapping away with considerable zeal. Then they lunge into mutual bear hugs and are rockling from side to side when (finally!) FCBA Security rushes out to drag them apart.
“We cannot believe our sweet Poppy was subjected to such dirty tactics!” Girls Friday Taryn Terrell indignantly declares. “However we take pride that Poppy was able to match that nasty Laura V slap for slap. ‘Ms Vicious’ will soon learn that Poppy can box even better than she catfights. Foxfire is going to regret not controlling their fighter!”
“The way we see it,” Beth Harnois replies, “Poppy started with her insulting remarks. We think she now knows Laura—or anyone else at Foxfire—is not to going to let a put-down go unanswered. As for her boxing—she’s going to find out she’s not ready for a fighter of Laura’s class and will learn—the hard way—that pre-fight politeness pays.”
Come fight night, Laura comes to the ring in a black bikini with black gloves and boots. Hair pulled back in a blonde ponytail. She glares at Poppy Drayton meet in the ring. Poppy in a silver gray bikini with matching gloves and boots with dark hair in a braid down her back. Poppy gives Laura a defiant glare in response. Much bodying up and pushing during ring instructions that has referee sternly lecturing both ladies to get them sufficiently calmed down before getting them properly instructed and sent to their corners. Crowd is loving all this and excitement is running high as the bell sounds to begin the bout.
R1: Laura quickly out of her corner and plants an opening right smack into Poppy’s mouth. Poppy knocked back a step, but comes right back with quick right of her own that catches Laura on the jaw. The blonde veteran gets her head swiveled, but comes back quickly. Poppy taking shots to the body, responds in kind and the two are going at it at very close range. Looking each other in the eyes as they swing away and bring leather smacking against wet, straining bodies. Laura finds Poppy’s chest a good target as she forces Poppy to back up from the repeated blows to her chest. Laura adds some hooks to the ribs and belly late. Poppy jabbing defiantly, but she can’t seem to make Laura back off. Stays close right to the bell and Laura emerges the winner on points.
R2: Laura looking for more of the same as she closes on Poppy to opening the round, but Poppy is now showing some elusive footwork. Laura caught off balance and gets her jaw as well as the side of her head punched hard. Laura scrambling to get out of range and regroup, but Poppy hard after her and going to the body this time. Laura getting hard leather stuffed into her gut and doubling her up. Poppy lifting punches up into Laura’s face and keeping Laura on the run. Late in the round, Laura finally able to stabilize behind her jab and slows Poppy down with some nasty smacks to the eyebrows of the brunette. Laura able to avoid being shutout, but Judges have no trouble giving the newcomer a wide win on points.
R3: Laura seems shaken by the Poppy comeback and comes out slowly with her guard up tight around her head. Poppy moving well on her feet and sizing the beleaguered Laura up as she moves around her. Poppy pounding away at Laura’s belly just avoid the waistband of her bikini bottoms. Laura’s high guard weakening AND POPPY STRIKES! Poppy drives a right uppercut in under Laura’s chin with POWER! Laura’s head jerked back, then her legs buckle and TIMBER! Laura Vandervoort slams back-first to the canvas actually bouncing after she lands! Crowd goes crazy and Poppy Drayton is grinning in triumph as she heads for the neutral corner. Laura pushing herself up with her left arm, looking around blearily and shaking her head slowly. Referee is counting and Laura finally takes notice. With a great effort, Laura slowly rises and just beats the count at “NINE…” Referee not sure he should allow this to go on, but Laura now getting fired up again, convinces the official to wave Poppy back in. Laura showing her toughness by greeting Poppy with some quick jabs to the face and a solid hook to the belly. Poppy more cautious, circling and looking for opening. Blonde veteran not giving brunette newcomer any more knockdown spots and the round ends somewhat quietly. However the round is big win for Poppy Drayton with a knockdown in her column. Laura’s got a lump on her chin from that knockdown uppie, but she gives Poppy a I’m-still-here-bytch glare before they head for their corners.
R4: Laura wasting no time going on the attack this round. She’s quick to bounce opening rights and lefts off Poppy head and then hook her in the midsection. Poppy struggling to deal with the resurgent Laura takes a lot of punching early, but she digs in to battle Laura in the trenches up close and personal. Two are going at it with the point-blank body punching as their sweat dripping foreheads nearly touch as they try to stare each other down. Crowd seems evenly divided but cheering wildly as they match each other punch for punch over the last half of the round. However, Poppy getting more into a series of rising uppercuts into Laura’s bikini cups. Laura getting the air knocked out of her lungs by these breast banging shots and has to pull back to get air back into her aching lungs. Laura recovering behind her jab, but Poppy able to pull out a close round.
R5: Laura still aggressive as the round opens and this time she goes to Poppy’s body. Poppy shelled hard to ribs and belly. Poppy can’t seem to evade the blonde’s incoming or discourage her with the jab. Laura then employing feints to draw Poppy off balance and brings some quick shots into the brunette’s chin and jaw. Poppy looking rattled by these punches, pulls back and Laura after her in a smooth pursuit. Poppy fighting hard to counter as Laura closes in on her again, but her stomach she really getting worked over until Poppy is hunched up and Laura is settling for bouncing shots off her head to the belly. Round goes wide to Laura. Poppy looking achy and disheartened as she heads for her corner. Laura watches her go, a small grim smile of satisfaction on her clips for a just a moment and then she turns away.
R6: Poppy slow off her stool and trying to be defensive. Laura looking like she’s gotten her second wind, comes charging right in and goes HARD to Poppy’s body. Poppy looks overwhelmed as the veteran just belly pounds her back to the ropes and then just goes to town as Poppy is pressed helplessly against the ropes, Then Laura smacks four quick right-lefts into Poppy’s chin. DOWN GOES POPPY! Poppy’s knees fold up and her back slides down to ropes until she is on her knees looking up blankly at a dominant looking Laura, before the blonde marches to the neutral corner. Poppy trying desperately to rise, but her legs just not working. She ends up in a sitting position against the ropes, arms wrapped around her midsection and looking up in misery as the referee finished with “…TEN! Y’ER OUT!”
THE WINNER: LAURA VANDERVOORT KO6
After: Big war hoop from Laura Vandervoort as her losing streak comes to an end. Rachel McAdams, Dani Fishel and Willa Holland crowd around Laura in the aftermath. Laura has her gloves removed and heads over to the Girls Friday corner to haul a stunned and teary-eyed Poppy Drayton off her stool.
“Now you know how much losing sucks! You’ve been lucky Dayton. Caity Lotz was beating the crap out of you and then you got in my lucky punches. You ALMOST did that to me, but I was tougher than Lotz. I came back and beat you down! Loser!”
Poppy trying to be stoical, but tears are still flowing as the seething Laura Vandervoort drags her around the ring. Taryn Terrell looking furious by the time Laura finishes the circuit and shoves the shellshocked Poppy into her arms.
“You are making some bad enemies, Vandervoort,” Taryn warns.
“I’ve had worse,” Laura sneers. “Oh, and when the weather gets warmer I’ll be back on the beach any of your girls want to see what I can do to them on the sand—call me—I’ll be happy to turn them into crying wrecks like this one!”
“I hate you!” Poppy cries. “I will make you suffer for this!”
“Oh, you want to try again?” Laura sneers. “Hey, Terrell, talk some sense to this loser, if she couldn’t beat me the first time, what makes her think she can do it the second?”
“Get out of here!” Taryn snaps.
Laura smiles and bows mockingly. Then she strolls away to join Rachel, Dani and Willa (who were close at hand for back-up),
Quite a show as Laura Vandervoort returns to the win column with this win over a promising rookie in Poppy Drayton. Laura’s toughness likely what saved her after that R3 knockdown and allowed her come back to pull out the victory. Painful loss for Poppy, but she does have talent and maybe she’s learned the hard way it’s not smart to twist the tail of a veteran tigress before a fight. Next fights should be important for both fighters. Laura needs to confirm she’s back to her winning ways while Poppy needs to prove she can come back from a hard loss with her self-confidence intact.
