Elodie Frege vs. Brie Larson
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE:
A pair of taller bantams matched up in this one, with leggy Brie Larson in town straight from "Skull Island" to take on French beauty Elodie Frege. And, Frege might have the large edge in experience, but Brie isn't at all lacking in confidence. "Sure," the blonde says with a nod, "Elodie's been in with some of the best and she's beaten some big names. But, I'm bigger and stronger than she is, and, when she starts that stuff on the ropes, I'll just wear her down and take her out of there."
"Perhaps she is a little bigger," says Elodie with a shake of the head. "But, I have fought and beaten bigger women before. And, I will do that again tonight."
ROUND ONE:
Elodie DOESN'T go to the pocket. Instead, it's ranged boxing to start things off. Larson makes with the long jab early, and Frege counters with her own, and the war of movement and geometry is on. Both fighters show plenty of slickness, moving head, hands, feet, feinting, creating openings, then filling them with leather. Larson has the better of things early because of her reach advantage. It isn't much, but it's enough. Late in the round, however, Elodie gets the geometry down and things change. The French beauty is getting to her spots, and, when she gets there, getting punches put together. At times, she even throws the younger blonde onto the defensive, forcing her to cover up and even give some ground. The only question becomes, does Frege have time to make up the early stagger. No. Not quite. At the bell, Elodie's in control, but Brie's won the round close to take the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
More of the same. To a point. It's more boxing at range in the middle of the ring. And, again, it's Brie who gets the better of the early going. She's adjusted to Frege's angling with double-tap jabs and a higher work rate, and the result is that Elodie can't get to those spots she was reaching in the last round. Instead, Larsen's keeping her where she wants her with the left jab. But, Frege's the veteran and that plays as the round goes on. She's in problem solving mode and problems are getting solved. Elodie breaks through Brie's defenses and begins getting where she wants to be again, and, when she does, she gets off in combination, again beginning to make up the younger woman's early stagger. Again, it will come down to whether Elodie does enough late to make up for what Brie did early. and, this time, she does. It's close again, but it's Frege, who's evens it at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Elodie gets rolling. French beauty now using that big advantage in experience in a big way. She's got the younger woman on her back foot from the very beginning of the round. Frege's preempting the blonde at every turn, getting off, forcing Brie to cover up, and, then, when Larson's about to fire back, putting together another combination. Brie reduced to the odd counter. She lands a good shot or two, but that's about it. Elodie, meanwhile, piles up the points, with good, educated leather both flying and landing for three solid minutes. Larson's not hurt, but she's clearly bothered, unable to get anything going, getting more and more flustered and frustrated as the round goes on. By the final 30 seconds, Brie's backed against the ropes taking in a high guard, doing almost nothing. Elodie, meanwhile, simply bangs away to the bell and books the round wide to take the 29-28 lead.
ROUND FOUR:
Frege still in control. She's doing what she wants when she wants now, and there's not much Brie can do about it. Larson's again on the back foot, on the defensive, reduced to the odd counter. Frenchwoman, meanwhile, piling up points like there's no tomorrow. She's sending fire at the blonde from everywhere, and an alarming amount of it is landing. Larson's corner has gone from demanding to pleading with their girl to "get off", but Brie can't seem to do it. Until. She can. It's one punch, but it's a BIG punch, a straight right hand counter that unlocks Elodie's knees. And, everything turns on that particular dime. Frege wobbles, covers up, and Larson unleashes all the frustrations of the last round and this one in a furious barrage that SENDS FREGE DOWN! Elodie crumples to her back after a brutal right hook to the chin. Larson stands and stares down, not able to process what's happened until the referee grabs her by the shoulder and points to a neutral corner. It's cost the blonde a few seconds...but it doesn't matter. Frege is OUT. Unmoving. And she stays that way well past the count of ten. It's OVER! And your winner by KO4 is Brie Larson!
AFTER:
Larson still not completely processing what's happened, but, it's beginning to sink in. "Man, I CAUGHT her with one! I'd been trying to time her for the last couple of rounds, but, I couldn't quite find the slot. But, wow. When I found it, I knew I had her. Then, it was just about finishing...and there's my first FCBA win! The first of many. Count on that!"
