BEFORE:
"No," says Rachel with a shake of the head. "I haven't gotten many chances here over the years. But. I've got one now. And, I'm not going to waste it."
"There's no question that she has ability," says Gemma with a nod. "And, I've no doubt she's coming in here to make a reputation. But. She's picked the wrong girl for that."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and that's the unmistakable tones of 'Cherry Bomb' by The Runaways, which just happens to be one of the favorite songs of the young lady coming to the ring as we speak, one of the stars of the CW's 'Reign', Rachel Skarsten!"
Tess: "And, as Rachel pointed out, she hasn't had many opportunities in the FCBA. She had her first fight back in 2003, just a couple of weeks after she turned 18, and she's fought only four times since..."
Cassie: "And, three of those four came in 2013. The last of that trio, a loss to Phoebe Tonkin, was on June 21, and that was the last time Skarsten was in an FCBA ring..."
O'Dell: "And, she just broke that drought of nearly four years, climbing in to be helped off with the robe by her corner crew. Rachel wearing a white number that shows off an in-shape body that has the attention of the crowd. And, that's 'London Calling' by The Clash you hear pounding through the arena, and that can only mean that 'The Gravesend Gladiator', Gemma Arterton!"
Tess: "And, this, of course, is Arterton's first time back in action since losing the Unified Lightweight Championship to Adriana Lima..."
McCarthy: "And, neither of those girls is championship material! They aren't worthy of carrying Palicki's bikini top!"
Cassie: "Tess' hat would indicate otherwise..."
Tess: "Thannnnkkkssss, BFF..."
O'Dell: "Arterton into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve. She's wearing that violet two piece we've seen before. Ladies about ready. Time for some picks. Tess likes Gemma. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Again, Arterton isn't championship material, but, even she can beat a girl with only one FCBA win!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "First underway. Arterton wants to get right to gunnery range and get to work. Skarsten letting the hands go here! She makes Gemma cover up with a big early flurry and SHE BUZZES ARTERTON WITH A RIGHT HAND! Rachel damning any and all torpedoes and going right after the former champion..."
McCarthy: "Why not? Nothing to lose..."
O'Dell: "And, that's clearly the thinking. Rachel winging away. Gemma backing and covering, trying to just ride this one out rather than counter it. Arterton a little wobbly, but retreating mostly in good order. Skarsten sitting down on everything, looking to shock the world and do it quickly..."
Cassie: "Not going to be able to keep this up all night, but, you can't fault the start."
O'Dell: "You can not. Arterton now on the ropes, taking fire, jabbing back here and there, just looking to let this play out. Skarsten working a little body, but not much. She's looking for a finisher here and making a statement at the same time. Ten seconds left. Good right from Rachel and there's the bell. Skarsten wide in the first."
Tess: "Color me a little surprised. Me and just about everybody else in the building."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second begins with a little more circumspection from the blonde. Skarsten setting up behind the left jab now, working that and looking to drop in right hands. Arterton seems to have shaken off last round and she's responding in kind, more than willing to box with the blonde..."
Tess: "Again, not a bad strategy from Rachel. She can't just keep winging away at Gems and not expect something really bad to happen."
O'Dell: "It's ranged boxing now, and this is something that Arterton's plenty good at. She's moving the feet, angling well, landing in combination and ROCKING RACHEL WITH A RIGHT HAND! There's that big right hand we've seen win a bunch of fights for the Brit and Rachel is GOBSMACKED!"
Cassie: "Didn't land that clean, but it was clean enough."
O'Dell: "Gemma now making with the physical and the power. She's driving Skarsten back, pinning her to the ropes, letting her have it with both hands. Rachel covering up, tight earmuff, looking to run the clock down. Only about 20 seconds to go. Skarsten rolling with, hanging on, and making it to the bell, but it's Gemma wide in the second."
McCarthy: "'Still even, though. 19-19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Role reversal to start the third. Now it's Arterton coming forward like Skarsten did in the first. Brunette using that heavy Front Street left jab to stop and hold Rachel, set her up for the big right hands. Blonde giving some ground, moving the feet some. Legs not all the way back, but at least part way there..."
Tess: "And, she needs to be able to move, because, you do NOT want to let Gems line you up."
O'Dell: "Arterton stepping to, backing the blonde up with another heavy flurry. Rachel banging back now. Can't just play defense here. She's got to punch for respect or she's going to get run over. Good left from Skarsten and a BOOMING right hand from Gemma and DOWN GOES RACHEL!"
Cassie (singing): "Turn out the liiigggghhhhttttss. The party's ovvvveerrrrr..."
O'Dell: "Skarsten dropped on her back by an absolutely explosive right hand. Gemma to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. No movement at all from the blonde. Seven. Eight. This is academic ladies. Nine. TEN! It's OVER! And your winner by KO3 in one-punch fashion is 'The Gravesend Gladiator', Gemma Arterton!"
McCarthy: "I say this all the time around here, but, lucky punch!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Gemma Arterton, and, Gems, she caught you off guard early."
Gemma (nodding): "I don't see a lot of what she did...trying to get physical with me right off. I was surprised, but I shouldn't have been. She came here to win, and that's what she was trying to do."
Tess: "Didn't take you long to right the ship..."
Gemma (smiling): "It was never going to. No one in this division is just going to come right at me like that and survive. No one. So, it wasn't a matter of adjusting, it was just getting into the fight plan, and, once that happened, good things followed."
