BEFORE:
"I've been champing at the bit to make my FCBA debut," says Camila with a gorgeous smile. "And, now that it's here, let's just say I don't plan to walk out of the ring a loser."
"It's nice to see she has a plan," says Jane with a nod. "Then again, so did Custer."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and that's 'Paint The Pictures' by of Verona..."
McCarthy: "Verona? Isn't that where Romeo and Juliet lived?"
Cassie: "Tess, check and see what the seven signs of the apocalypse are, because, I'm pretty sure Mac making a Shakespeare reference has to be one of them..."
McCarthy: "Shut UP, Scabbo!"
O'Dell (sighing): "We are referring to the BAND of Verona and this song happens to be the theme music for the young lady coming down the aisle right now, one of the stars of the CW's 'Riverdale', Camila Mendes!"
Tess: "Camila plays Veronica Lodge on the series, which, by the by, has been renewed for a second season next year..."
McCarthy: "Since when do YOU know so much about TV, Walmart?"
Tess: "Since I learned to read the PREP MATERIAL Avril provides for us..."
McCarthy: "I REFUSE to read that propaganda!"
Tess: "And, thus, you remain clueless..."
McCarthy: "I am NOT...SHUT UP, WALMART!"
O'Dell: "Drink up, boys, as Camila climbs into the ring and is helped off with the robe to reveal a red bikini that gets quite the reaction from the crowd. And, that's 'Pleasant Nightmare' by Alih Jey you hear, and that can only mean 'The Marin County Marauder', Jane Levy, is on her way to the ring."
Tess: "Levy a girl who's been very impressive thus far in her development and is pushing up the rankings and looking to do the same in the Front Street pecking order at flyweight..."
McCarthy: "She's also a typical, overrated Dancing Hooker!"
O'Dell: "Levy into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve to reveal that peach number we've seen before, and the ladies are about ready. Time for some picks. Tess likes Jane. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Mendes is the typical Dancing Hooker opponent. No FCBA wins. Levy."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "And, we're underway. Mendes right to the legs here. She's working the jab, circling, showing a ton of movement. Camila an athletic girl, and you're seeing that right now. Levy doing a little stalking. Trying to match footwork, get some timing down. Not doing a lot on offense at the moment..."
Tess: "Not exactly a bad early strategy for Mendes. Levy is a big hitter among flyweights. You don't necessarily want to mix it up with her immediately."
O'Dell: "That seems to be the thinking. Camila wants to keep working the feet, hitting and running, making Levy chase. Jane not going to do that. She'll slowly stalk instead. Result is that Mendes is having the better of things here in the first, since she's able to land and slip away before Levy can counter."
Cassie: "This may be a good EARLY strategy, but it isn't going to work for long. Jane's a former college soccer player and one of the most athletic girls in the division."
O'Dell: "Good point, Cassandra Lynn, but, for the moment, anyway, it's working. Mendes getting into a pretty good rhythm, bounces forward, lands a couple of punches, then dances away. Ten seconds remaining in the first. Camila going all leggy right to the bell. Mendes in the first."
McCarthy: "And, she's up 10-9. Not a bad start for the kid."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Mendes back on her bicycle to start the second. Levy now beginning to work forward a little. She's cutting the ring, stepping to, digging a little body before Camila can slip away. Brunette trying to stay in open canvas, but the redhead now pretty effectively cutting off her means of escape."
Cassie: "This is what I'm talking about. There are some girls, even in the flyweight division, that you can cause major problems with movement, but Jane isn't one of them."
O'Dell: "Levy cuts the ring, bangs the belly. Mendes ties up. Forces a break. Gets back to open ocean where she can stick and move. Again, Levy forward to hook ribs, and, again, Camila going to tie her up, hang on until the referee steps in. Not a bad adjustment for a girl in her first FCBA fight..."
McCarthy: "Well, we hear that the CW is a pretty good training ground for young fighters. This girl looks like she's learned something."
O'Dell: "Final 30 seconds of the second. Again, Levy stepping to and banging away. Mendes tying up, hooking Jane's head. Redhead just keeps punching until the referee steps in and forces the ladies apart. Mendes back moving, circling, just a few ticks left and she'll leg out the round. Fairly close, but, Levy."
Tess: "Even at 19, but, I'm already impressed with Mendes. She's not over her head here, I don't think."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third begins the way the second ended. Mendes legging. Redhead stalking, cutting, stepping in, banging body. Again, Camila tying up, trying to force a break. Levy punching free, backing the brunette up with a solid right hand. Mendes slips away and goes back to circling..."
Tess: "Camila took that right hand pretty well. No panic. For a girl without a lot of experience, she's opening an eye or two."
O'Dell: "Jane stepping to again, working more body. Mendes again trying to tie up, but Levy able to punch out of it and get some more points scored before Mendes can extricate herself and get back to open canvas. Jane getting into a rhythm of her own, now, Mac, seems to have found some answers for Camila's tactics."
McCarthy: "And, now, we'll see if the kid can make another adjustment."
O'Dell: "That we will. Jane upping the pressure just a bit in the late going. She's in control of the round and she wants to stay there. Mendes still trying to fight on open ground, but Levy keeps getting the ring cut and thumping that body with heavy leather. Final seconds tick off and there's the bell. Levy's round again."
Cassie: "And, Jane has her first lead, 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Levy upping the aggression early and Mendes responding by giving a little ground. It's a back and circle now instead of a straight circle, and that's giving Camila just a bit more space to punch and a bit more time to move. Levy not bothered by the punches, though..."
Cassie: "She is not. Still cutting and closing, getting the hands up on the way forward, working those abs and ribs when she gets in there."
O'Dell: "And, sooner or later, that's going to take a toll. For the moment, though, Mendes seemingly unaffected, still moving very well, still working those legs. Levy adjusting well to Mendes' latest tactic, using excellent geometry here to cut the ring, bring Camila to battle, and then bang her around in close."
McCarthy: "Sooner or later, this kid is going to have to bang back for respect."
O'Dell: "Coming down the stretch in the fourth, and Jane starting to pour it on now. She's got Camila cornered and she's working her over to both the body and the head. Mendes tying up, but Levy shoving free and landing a NICE right hand! Best punch of the fight so far, and that got Mendes' attention. Camila covering up for the first time and Jane taking body to the bell. Levy easily."
Tess: "And, it's 39-37, Levy."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth begins with Jane right after Camila. Mendes trying to create space with the feet and the jab, but Levy having none. She's swarming the brunette, landing solid shot with both hands. Mendes trying to fire back, slow down the redhead, but Jane just keeps coming, looking to bring power to bear..."
Cassie: "Camila's done a good job of finding ways to compete in there to this point, but, she's getting taken to the woodshed right now."
O'Dell: "She is, indeed. Jane putting a thumping on the CW beauty, backing her up, forcing her to cover up. Mendes working hard, trying to hold her own in the exchanges and keep them as short as possible, but Levy's got it all put together at the moment and she's taking it to the brunette."
McCarthy: "I TOLD you this kid had to punch for respect. Until she does, Levy's going to be in her grill."
O'Dell: "And, that's exactly where Jane is as we come down the stretch. Twenty seconds to go in the fifth. Levy backs up Mendes with a hard right hand, bangs body with a couple of hooks, lands a short left hook to the head that forces Camila to cover up. Five seconds left. NICE right by Jane and there's the bell. Levy and wide in the fifth."
Tess: "49-46 at the half, and Jane definitely rolling now."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Sixth underway and Levy back to work. She's cutting and closing on Mendes, and using that heavier weight of shot to get the better of the exchanges. Camila trying to find a way to slow the redhead down, but nothing much seems to be working at the moment for the lovely brunette..."
Cassie: "She's got guts, though. She's hanging in as best she can, not going all defensive, firing back as much as possible."
O'Dell: "No doubt about it, Cassandra Lynn. She's definitely coming off second best in this fight, but, you've got to like a lot of what you're seeing out of Camila Mendes this evening. Levy a hard right hand that backs Mendes up a step and CAMILA STAGGERS JANE with a right!"
McCarthy: "Short right hook and it landed on the button!"
O'Dell: "Mendes letting the hands go now and DOWN GOES LEVY! Mendes drops Jane with a straight right hand and everything just turned on a dime! Camila to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Levy to her feet at eight. Referee will give her the mandatory...AND THEN WAIVE IT OFF! Levy still unsteady after the mandatory eight and the referee stopping the fight! And, out of NOWHERE, your winner by TKO6 is Camila Mendes!"
Tess: "You just never know what's going to happen in the FCBA, do you?"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Camila Mendes, and, Camila, things were not looking good for you up until that right hook..."
Camila: "Yeah, and my corner was letting me know about it, too. They were telling me I had to do something to turn things around, that she was well ahead and in control. I just hung in there the best I could and waited for my chance. It came, and I didn't waste it."
Tess: "At some point, somebody was going to break Levy's winning streak, but I don't think many people thought it would be Camila Mendes..."
Camila: "But, you know who did? Camila Mendes! And, she was right!"
