BEFORE:
"Well, I finally get a shot in the FCBA," says Gina with a shake of head. "I thought it would never happen. And, now it's time to show everybody what they've been missing. And, that's exactly what I plan to do."
"Look, I don't care how many FCBA fights she's had," says Hunter. "I've only had one myself. I've got to work hard and be at my best tonight, and that's exactly what I plan to do."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "We're back at ringside and that's '...Baby One More Time' by Britney Spears, one of the favorite songs of the lady coming to ringside, the star of the CW's 'Jane The Virgin', Gina Rodriguez!"
Tess: "And, while this IS Gina's FCBA debut, she does have a fight and a win in the BBU..."
McCarthy: "Since when did YOU start knowing anything about the BBU?"
Cassie: "Let me field this one, Tess. When she started READING THE PREP MATERIAL Avril gives us!"
McCarthy: "And, again, I refuse to read that Front Street propaganda!"
O'Dell (sighing): "See, I think this has been going on too long to be a nightmare. I used to think I was going to just wake up one morning, shake my head, and say, 'Wow, no more drinking vodka and eating ghost pepper wings before bed.' But, I'm pretty sure this is all real now, so, Rodriguez climbs into the ring and is helped off with the robe to reveal a form-fitting black bikini and a body that shows she's been working hard for this one. And, that's 'Shake It Out' by Florence and the Machine, and that can only mean that Front Street's newest member, 'The Ventura County Volcano', Hunter King, is on her way to the ring!"
McCarthy: "And, that's STILL a stupid nickname!"
Tess: "Again, you should take it up with your boss..."
McCarthy: "HE IS NOT MY BOSSSSSSSSSS!"
Cassie: "You might want to check the signature on your paychecks."
McCarthy: "I have DIRECT DEPOSIT!"
O'Dell (sighing): "And, now, I'm thinking maybe I AM going to wake up with an empty vodka bottle on the floor on the side of the bed and my mouth covered with ghost pepper sauce. King into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve. She's wearing that navy blue number we saw last time, and the crowd loving it just as much tonight. Ladies about ready, and that means it's time for some picks. Tess likes Hunter. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Rodriguez is a typical Dancing Hooker opponent...no FCBA wins...but, I STILL think she'll beat Weirdo's new blonde bimbo!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "And, there's the bell. Rodriguez showing pressure early. She's giving up some height here, so, no surprise she wants to work forward. King looking to create space with the left jab, but Gina working through, then working some body, going upstairs, backing up the blonde..."
Cassie: "As some of you might know, Gina grew up around boxing and has been involved in it all her life. She knows what she's doing in there."
O'Dell: "Definitely appears to at the moment. She's out-boxing the younger blonde here early. Out-boxing and out-FOXING. Moving the head and shoulders, moving the hands, working body and then head, then back downstairs. Hunter not getting much of anything done at the moment, Mac..."
McCarthy: "This is why I picked Rodriguez. This kid is green as grass and she's not going to learn anything from the likes of Neve Campbell."
O'Dell: "Into the final fifteen seconds of an excellent first round for the brunette. Gina in control from the opening seconds, causing all kinds of problems for King with this pressure. Hunter covering up, taking fire, getting backed up right to the bell. Great start for Gina, who takes it wide."
Tess: "And, takes the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second begins with more pressure from Gina. Hunter hanging in now and banging back in close. King's given up on trying to create space and is, instead, getting into the phone booth with the brunette and giving as good as she's getting. Nothing pretty about what's going on right now, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Not pretty, but effective. Both fighters scoring to both head and body right now."
O'Dell: "Gina continuing to move the head and hands. Doing that a bit more effectively than King at the moment. Blonde having more success downstairs than up as a result. Brunette, meanwhile, landing plenty of good shot to the head, even backing King up a step here and there..."
Tess: "But, Hunter stepping right back to. She's not willing to give ground in this stanza."
O'Dell: "She is not. Not a whole lot in it as we come down the stretch. Blonde and brunette digging body, banging away. Nobody sloppy, but everybody aggressive. Ten seconds remaining. Good right hand from Rodriguez. King fires back with a solid one-two and there's the bell. Close. Gina again."
Cassie: "And, it's 20-18 for the brunette."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Into the third and the terms are set. Gina wants to swarm and Hunter's going to stand her ground and bang back. Essentially, they're fighting on Rodriguez's terms, and, so far, that's been an advantage for the brunette, as you'd expect, though King is, again, holding her own fairly well in this round..."
Cassie: "Hunter's definitely getting more comfortable fighting this way. She got the fight taken to her in the first, but she's done better the last two rounds..."
O'Dell: "And there's a right hand and GINA'S HURT! King a right hook and Rodriguez stumbles backward and covers up! Hunter going all in immediately, winging away with both hands looking to finish this thing right now. Brunette giving ground, keeping the guard high, countering here and there..."
McCarthy: "Weirdo's girl getting a little sloppy and wild here, but, that's typical of young fighters in a situation like this."
O'Dell: "Twenty seconds to go. Hunter a HARD right hand and Gina wobbled again! Rodriguez up against the ropes both literally and figuratively now. King letting the hands go, throwing everything she can at the older woman. Gina hanging on, running clock, and she'll make the bell. End of the third. King. Wide."
Tess: "And, Hunter cuts the lead to 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "King looking to press the issue now, but Rodriguez now going into counter-punch mode. She's giving a little ground, keeping the guard up, and firing back with hard, accurate stuff off of the blonde's offense. Hunter settling down some in this round after hearing it in the corner..."
Tess: "But Rodriguez definitely has some talent for the counter, because she's scoring well despite that."
O'Dell: "Is, indeed. Just a small opening is all the brunette needs. Blonde, meanwhile, scoring pretty well fighting lead. She's getting punches put together as well as she has all night. Getting into a little bit of rhythm here. Problem is, Rodriguez is doing a good job of slipping and blocking..."
McCarthy: "AND responding with hard shot when she does...and, that's the key right now."
O'Dell: "Fifteen seconds to go in a quickly-paced fourth. Good right hand from King and Gina responds with a solid right of her own. Two really hard shots right there, but the ladies shake them off and get back to work. Five seconds to go. Gina digs a hook to the body and there's the bell. Close. Rodriguez."
Cassie: "And, Gina's lead is back to two, 39-37."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Fifth begins with Gina applying pressure again. She's had a round to get the legs back, and now she's returned to the offensive. King moving the feet a little more now, angling Rodriguez a little, creating space, landing some stuff at range before the brunette can work in close..."
Cassie: "Nice adjustment by the blonde. Not just going to play by Gina's rules."
O'Dell: "Gina inside and banging. King banging right back. Fighters tie up. Referee breaks. King working the jab at range, landing a follow on right. Rodriguez slips past, works inside, bangs some body, goes back upstairs. Again, the fighters tie up and again the referee breaks them apart."
Tess: "Two different fights developing in there. King having the advantage as Gina moves in, Rodriguez doing better once she gets in close."
O'Dell: "Exactly. And, as both fighters are having their moments, it's a close round again. King a SOLID right hand that stops Gina and Hunter lands a nice combination before Rodriguez can slip inside her defenses and go to work in close again. Five seconds to go. Good right hook, Gina, and there's the bell. Close. King this time."
McCarthy: "And it's 48-47, Rodriguez at the half."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Second half of the fight begins the way the first half ended, with Gina working forward and Hunter looking to pick her off on the way in. Rodriguez again slipping past the glove, going to work body. King responding in kind. Both ladies working hard in close, body, head, back to the body."
Tess: "Both of these girls pack some power for this division."
O'Dell: "No doubt about it. That's solid shot being exchanged. And there's a GOOD right hand Gina and HUNTER HURTS THE BRUNETTE WITH A RIGHT OF HER OWN! King a right hook and Rodriguez stumbles and nearly goes down! Blonde all in again, winging away at the dazed brunette..."
McCarthy: "Getting a little sloppy again, though, missing too much..."
O'Dell: "But, she's also landing plenty. Gina backing and covering, trying to tie up, but Hunter shoving her off, punching free, letting both hands go. Rodriguez rope bound now as King THUMPS her to the head and body. Referee looking in, but the clock running out. Ten seconds left. Good left hook, Hunter, but she's out of time. There's the bell. King wide."
Cassie: "And, we're all even at 57."
ROUND SEVEN:
O'Dell: "Seventh quickly reminds us of the fourth. Rodriguez going to the counter game as she gives ground and covers looking to recover from the heavy shot she took in the last round. Blonde a bit more circumspect this time, working more jabs to set up those rights..."
Cassie: "And, she's keeping the work rate up, suppressing some of that counter action by staying on the offense."
O'Dell: "Still, the brunette getting some leather on target in response. Good right hand King. That backed Gina up a step. Hunter stepping right back to, getting very physical in this round and SHE DROPS RODRIGUEZ! A BOOMING right hand from King and Gina blown right to her back..."
McCarthy: "Lucky shot!"
O'Dell: "King quickly to a neutral corner. Referee's count at three. Four. Gina, unbelievably, rolling to her belly after that. About half the division would be OUT. Six. Seven. Rodriguez pushing to hands and knees. Eight. Nine. TEN! It's over! Brunette can't get off her hands and knees and it's OVER! And your winner by KO7 is Hunter King!"
Tess: "Big win for King, but Rodriguez showed plenty in this fight."
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Hunter King, and, Hunter, tough one tonight..."
Hunter (nodding): "Knew it would be. She's physical and knows how to box. Like I said, I needed to bring everything I had to the ring, and that's what I did."
Tess: "And now it's back to work?"
Hunter (nodding): "Exactly. I have a long way to go and a lot of work to do before I'm the fighter I can be. So, back to work and get ready for the next fight."
