"I'm not a lightweight by any means, but there are certain women categorized that way I can compete with," explained Amy Acker regarding her decision to fight Emmanuelle Vaugier. "Really it makes a lot more sense to see me in the ring with Emmanuelle than with a shorter, heavier woman." Vaugier was optimistic. "I'm glad to be facing a good opponent, but I think I can outclass her since I'm used to facing bigger opponents. I don't think Amy Acker really gives anyone an easy time, though."
Very little personal animosity here -- Amy Acker makes an entrance in a black sports bra and trunks, exchanges words briefly with Emmanuelle Vaugier, in maroon.
Round 1:
Acker managed to sneak in an early lead, poking at Vaugier with her jab while Vaugier played relatively defensively. Vaugier proved herself dangerous in the second minute when a proper battle broke out. Acker showed that she respected the threat the other actress posed by taking it slow and playing it safe herself.
Round 2:
Vaugier made her move in the second round, overwhelming Acker with a strong offense early on. Acker ducks, retreats, and counters with some success, but after Vaugier jolts her with a straight right to the nose, she begins to waver, giving away opportunities she normally would not, and failing to strike back as effectively as she needed to. Vaugier efficiently exploited Acker's struggles without overextending.
Round 3:
Entering the round on more equal footing, Acker gave Vaugier something to worry about early on, setting up to trade big right hands, then evading Vaugier's swing and throwing the actress off. Stunned, Vaugier absorbed a left hook to the jaw for her trouble, rolling with it and fading away to avoid her dangerous opponent. Acker was careful not to leave herself open, but never let Vaugier catch her breath for the whole round, dancing in and out of reach to land a solid blow here and there.
Round 4:
Both women were still full of energy in the fourth round. Vaugier was able to exploit her rival's misstep first, stepping in to strike Acker on the chin after dodging the other actress' own swing. Acker moved in herself, trying to punish Vaugier after the fact, but she held firm. Vaugier ended up landing a solid punch to the ribs and striking Acker on the chin with an uppercut in the ensuing clash. Acker fights on well despite the wear and tear, but can't catch Vaugier this round.
Round 5:
Despite her opponent's success, Acker came out strong in the fifth round, tagging Vaugier early on with quick attacks at range that made the other actress wince. As the seconds ticked by, Acker stuck to Vaugier, gradually grinding her down. By the end of the round, Acker was leaning into power punches and landing them, while Vaugier was struggling to respond without opening herself up even further.
Round 6:
In the sixth round Acker started out as if there hadn't been a break, making Vaugier's body shudder as she lunged into a heavy blow to the actress nose. Vaugier's downward spiral began there, as Acker's repeated blows to the head left her shaky and left her slowly losing control. By the second minute Acker was throwing bombs almost uncontested, and as Vaugier made her last attempted counter swing, she took a punch to the nose, stumbled, and fell to the mat. Vaugier landed on her hands and knees, and she rolled over into a seated position. Breathing hard, she waited out the count. The final decision -- KO6 Acker.
In very little time Vaugier was back on her feet to watch the referee raise Acker's glove in victory. Bruised but upright, Vaugier accepted a hug from Acker. Later, Acker answered questions about the match. "At the time I was more focused on how hard she could hit me, but now that I've had a little bit of time to recover I'm going to say I had a blast. That's an ok way to think, right?" Acker laughed. "If I have to be serious, I feel great about this fight. I think I'm good enough to win this fight again; it doesn't feel like a fight that could have gone either way. And against a talented beauty like Emmanuelle that's a good feeling."
