Michelle Williams vs. Ariana Grande (Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE:
No doubt who the favorite is in this one. You've got a Hall of Famer and member of the 100-win club with a dozen titles to her credit against a girl with a winning percentage south of 35 who hasn't won a fight since 2015. Still, the lovely Ms. Grande has shown plenty of potential, and she's not lacking in confidence. "I know nobody expects me to win," she says. "Especially not Michelle, who's going to be the most surprised person in the building when they raise my hand tonight."
"It's cute," says Mishy with a smile that has to put some ice at the base of plenty of spines in Camp Grande, "that she thinks she has a chance against me. Too bad I'm going to have to beat the confidence out of her. Well. Not really too bad, because, I'm going to enjoy doing it."
ROUND ONE:
Not much doubt what the game plan was going to be for the brunette, who's giving up not only loads of experience but size and power as well. Dancing. That's the idea, and, with Ariana's athleticism, quickness, and speed, dancing is a very good plan indeed. Now, of course, Mishy's seen this all before. She's a flyweight after all, and she's been in with plenty of quick, athletic girls who thought to use all of that to their advantage, and even the best of them have found out that Michelle Williams has ways of countering all that speed...but, none of that is on display in the first round of this one...because, Mishy can NOT counter what Grande's doing. Ariana's just too quick and too slick. She's moving all the time, jabbing, circling, stopping, popping, then getting moving again. She's beating Michelle to every punch and getting gone before Williams can get off. It's all Ariana all the time from the opening bell to the final second, and, when the closing bell rings, Grande's grabbed the first wide and leads 10-9.
ROUND TWO:
Mishy begins to adjust. Ariana's still on the move, but Michelle's got the lay of the land now and she's beginning to slow down all the legging. She's getting the ring cut down now and forcing Grande to battle some, though not as much as the blonde would like. The brunette's still finding open canvas, and, when she does, she's an absolute blur of motion, bouncing, dancing, jabbing, and letting the hands go when she's in position to do that. Mishy's still coming off second-best in those types of exchanges, but, she's closing the stagger when she's able to cut the ring and create longer trades. In those situations, it's the veteran, with her boxing ability, who comes off better. Result of all this is a good, close, two-way round that's somewhat in doubt right to the final bell. When it rings, however, it's Ariana who's claimed the points again and stretches the lead to 20-18.
ROUND THREE:
Mishy keeps at it. She's timing the brunette better now, breaking down what she's doing with the legs and finding answers, finding ways to bottle her up more. And, when she does, she's taking advantage, getting off faster and even getting some body work in. Grande willing to fire back in these positions, but, she's still trying to keep the exchanges as short as possible so that she can get back to open canvas. Williams, though, managing to extend them in this stanza, and, again, that's to the blonde's advantage, as she piles up points and body investment before Grande can get back to the terms she wants to enforce. Slowly, as the round goes on, Michelle builds an advantage on the cards. It's not a large one, but it's a consistent one, and, when the bell finally rings, the blonde's claimed her first round and cut Grande's lead to 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
And, now Michelle is rolling. For the first time, we're seeing the difference between a young, developing fighter and a Hall of Famer, and it is vast. Williams is enforcing her terms, creating exchanges, and then carving the brunette up in same, despite Ariana's faster hands. The speed is offset by Michelle's defense, her positioning, her absolute mastery of geometry. Grande's constantly bottled up and forced to trade, and, while she's, again, game, she's simply unable to hold her own on these terms. Instead, the blonde dominates, working the brunette over to head and, especially, body. Williams landing nasty shots to the ribs and midsection, banging the odd blow to the kidneys, one of which gets the referee's attention and prompts a "who, me?" reaction from the blonde. The bell is an absolute relief to Ariana, who stalks back to her corner looking frustrated and a little scuffed. On the cards, it's Williams wide and we're even at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Ariana shows some of that potential. She adjusts and in a big way. Grande's back in motion, but she's changed up the footwork. She's circling wider now, despite the blonde's reach advantage. This gives her an extra sliver of time to react to Michelle's efforts to cut, and she uses that time to frustrate them. The brunette's now staying in open canvas again, forcing the blonde to chase, and touching her up while she does that. Williams working forward, forward, forward, but finding no satisfaction, only nicely-placed jabs in her face. Hall of Famer the one now being frustrated by the speed and quickness of the brunette. Grande in control from the very first second of the right to the final bell. Mishy has a few moments when she can bring her rival to battle, but very few. It's Ariana wide in the fifth, and Grande's right back on the lead 48-47.
ROUND SIX:
Grande all motion, wide circles, quick jabs, stopping and popping and getting right back moving. Michelle more aggressive now, willing to eat some of those lefts to close and create exchanges. About a minute in, Williams gets the ring cut and then digs a NASTY right hook into Grande's belly. Ariana stopped cold, bunched up, Michelle lets the hands go and DOWN GOES ARIANA! Grande in a heap at Williams' feet. Michelle looks down at her handiwork for several seconds until the referee turns her by the shoulder toward a neutral corner. Grande, given the extra time, struggles to her feet, beats the count, takes the mandatory and watches as the referee waives Mishy forward. Cover the kids' eyes stuff now. Grande's lead-legged and hurt and Michelle's looking to finish. Michelle works the brunette back to the ropes where Ariana forms tight ear-muff, and then begins carving up her body. Grande taking a beating to every legal inch of her frame below the bust line. Williams digging, forcing the guard down, then ROCKING the brunette with a right uppercut. Ariana staggered, stumbling, and Michelle DROPS HER WITH A RIGHT HAND. Ariana crumpled, lying on her right side, parallel to the ropes. Williams prances away smiling. Brunette struggles to rise, gets to left hand and knees with right hand holding her belly, but can go no further. Count passes her by and it's OVER! Your winner by KO6 in brutal fashion is Michelle Williams!
AFTER:
Michelle with that ice-inducing smile. "See, I knew what she was going to do. She was going to bounce around the ring and get all leggy and all that, but, I know exactly how to deal with those kinds of girls. I just get into their bodies, take those legs away. And, once I do that, they're at my mercy...and, I have precious little of that." |
