Vanessa Hudgens vs. Emma Watson (Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE:
Emma's a girl who's been showing tools to be a top flyweight for some time, but after plenty of fits and starts and stints in three different stables, it looks like the lovely Brit has found a home at SIA and may finally be turning the corner. However. There are few fighters in the FCBA who enjoy standing at the corner and knocking a girl right back around the other side more than three-time flyweight champion Vanessa Hudgens. "It's cute," says 'Nessa with a smirk, "How Emma thinks she's in my league. Anyone who couldn't beat that LOSER Stewart has no business in the ring with a champion like ME."
"You know," says Emma with a shake of the head, "I've had to deal with plenty of doubters and haters in my career. Vanessa's just the latest. But, the good news is, at least HER I get to punch in the face."
ROUND ONE:
'Nessa gets leggy early. Watson moves well, but few girls, even flyweights, move like Hudgens. So, it's no surprise to see her bouncing and jabbing and making Emma move the feet in an effort to square her up and box. BOOM! Watson's HURT??? Yes, indeed, she is. Because, while the Brit beauty was doing all that moving and geometry in an effort to find her rival, 'Nessa set the feet and fired a lightning right hand almost from the hip that Watson never saw. The Brit wobbles and Vanessa immediately pounces, letting the hands go and driving a stunned Emma back into the ropes. The next minute and three-quarters is about as grim as it gets for Watson. Hudgens is getting off lusty with everything, dealing her nasty shots to both head and body. Emma's covering up, rolling with, trying to fire back and keep the ref at bay. He seems ready to leap in several times, but, he restrains himself, allowing the onslaught to continue to the bell. It's 'Nessa wide in the first.
ROUND TWO:
There are lots of ways to learn things about fighters, and one is to watch how they deal with adversity. And, Emma's got plenty of that on her plate as the second begins. Hudgens is back to bouncing, snapping a nasty jab into Watson's face. Emma's legs aren't all the way back, and 'Nessa's taking advantage, stinging her rival at every opportunity. Then, Emma slips one, steps forward, digs a NASTY left hook into the belly of 'The Fittest Flyweight', and follows with a short right hook to the chin and 'NESSA'S HURT! That quickly, the fight turns completely and it's the American in trouble and the Brit calling in the artillery strikes. Watson's adrenaline powers through whatever fog remains from the last round and she goes all in, letting Hudgens have it with both hands, driving the former champ against the ropes and SAVAGING her for over a minute and a half. Again, the ref looks to be stepping in more than once, but never does and the beatings continue right to the bell. It's Watson wide and we're even at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Emma looking to at least consolidate now. She's after Vanessa immediately, and Hudgens is a stationary target as she's plenty unsure of those legs. Watson sitting down on her punches, slugging away, landing hard shot, GETTING HURT! 'Nessa takes advantage of an opening caused by a bit of over aggression on the part of her rival and wobbles her with a right hand counter. Watson immediately covers up and Hudgens lets the hands go. Vanessa backing up Emma, who's giving ground in gobs. Hudgens having to work hard to take it, with those legs still not cooperating fully, but, eventually, she gets the Brit on the ropes, and, for the third straight round the ref stands watching as one of the two brunettes gets off lusty while the other takes and hangs on. And, again, the fighter on the receiving end is ABLE to hang on to the bell, but only just. For the third consecutive round, it's not close, as Hudgens takes it going away to lead 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
For the second straight stanza one of the fighters is looking to build on a big round. And, Hudgens has learned something from the second. She's not dancing around snapping jabs. She's working forward soundly behind the left, dropping rights behind it, backing Emma up in a professional and effective manner. And, it doesn't matter. Because, Watson turns things around anyway. About half way through, she slips another jab, sets her feet, and BLASTS 'Nessa with a right-hand counter. Hudgens staggers and stays on her feet only to be met with a devastating blizzard of shot and DOWN GOES VANESSA! Hudgens crumples face first to the canvas as Watson scampers away to a neutral corner. Crowd going nuts as the count mounts with 'Nessa still down. Hudgens gets to hands and knees at seven...and to her feet at nine. Referee gives her the mandatory, thinks it over, and waives Watson forward. Emma a buzz saw, hammering away at the American, knowing she's ready to go, and, she is. But, she doesn't. Somehow, again, Hudgens hangs on and lasts out the round. But, it's 10-8 for Watson, who now leads 38-37.
ROUND FIVE:
And, for the fourth straight stanza we have a fighter looking to build on a big round. Watson's after the American early, showing both aggression and caution. She's working combinations, getting the hands out and back quickly, scoring with both hands while looking to avoid any traps her rival might be setting. Vanessa's in retreat, trying to counter in spots, but unable to stop Watson or even slow her effectively. Emma's getting that consolidation she's looking for this time. She's piling up the points and the punishment, banging away at Vanessa's face and body, giving her a thorough going over. In the last 30 seconds or so, Hudgens begins firing back a bit more effectively, but Watson's still in control, remaining so for all three minutes, and, for the fifth consecutive round, the issue is nowhere near in doubt. It's Watson wide and now with a 48-46 lead.
ROUND SIX:
For the first time in the fight, someone's taken control, and that's Emma Watson. The Brit's got everything working now, and, even as her rival's legs finally get back to normal, she keeps rolling. That boxing skill she's shown many times is on full display as she gets to her spots, puts punches together, forces Hudgens to cover and retreat. 'Nessa's moving well again, but, it's not helping. Watson's fighting lead and effectively so, and, while she's not dominating this stanza like the last, she's in control and getting the better of things. Until, she's not. Two minutes in, Hudgens draws that right from the hip again and lands it on Watson's chin and DOWN GOES EMMA! Watson spilled to her right side. Crowd going nuts watching what's shaping up to be a fight-of-the-year contender. Hudgens to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Watson rolls to her back at five. Sits up at seven. Gets to her feet at nine. Again, a mandatory with the ref thinking it over, and, again, he thinks better of a stoppage. On comes 'Nessa, and Hudgens throws everything but the kitchen sink at Watson. Again, a fighter on the ropes taking, hanging on. And, again, she hangs on to the bell. But, it's Hudgens 10-8 and we're now even at 56.
ROUND SEVEN:
Hudgens now wants the finisher. She's well aware of how many twists and turns this thing has taken, and her corner's spent the time between rounds reminding her of it, but that's not stopping her from throwing in a pile of reserves looking to end it in the seventh. For her part, Watson is game. And, that's about all she can be. She's buzzed and wobbly and the former champion simply won't give her the time or space to shake any of that. Instead, Hudgens deals out a three-minute beating as vicious as it is thorough. She pummels every legal part of Watson's body, crossing the proverbial Rubicon about half way through the round with some shots into her rack. By the final minute, we have a fighter on the ropes taking yet AGAIN. But, try as she might, Hudgens can't finish Watson. Emma hangs on desperately to the bell. When it rings, 'Nessa has her shutout and a 66-65 lead, but Watson is still standing.
ROUND EIGHT:
More grit from the Brit. Watson's spent a lot of time in the woodshed in the last couple of rounds, but, heading down the stretch, she's in this thing and knows it. And, she knows she needs to start digging. So, she does, and, as Vanessa applies the pressure again, Emma sets her feet and begins firing back. And, all of a sudden, it's ON! We've got a FIREFIGHT in the center of the ring and the already-pumped crowd is on its feet as the two brunette beauties throw bombs at one another. Things sit dead center for about 30 seconds, but, it's Emma who starts to gain the advantage, forcing 'Nessa to cover up, even backing her up with a couple of good shots. Watson's wrestling control of this thing from Hudgens and DOWN GOES EMMA??? Place going batcrap as yet another turn of fortunes happens via a perfectly-placed one-two from the former champion. A short hook to the chin and a straight right to the face send the Brit to her back. Hudgens to a neutral corner, waiting and watching, and, while she'd never admit it, hoping, too. Watson struggling to get to her feet as the count mounts, but, she can't do it. It passes her by and it's OVER, and your winner by KO8 is Vanessa Hudgens!
AFTER:
Hudgens plenty scuffed but not acting it in the post-fight. "Sure, she landed a couple of lucky shots," says 'Nessa. "And, that's my fault. I KNOW how much better than her I am, so I got a little sloppy. But, when it came down to it, I was simply too good and too tough for a soft girl like Emma, and that's why she ended up where she always will against a fighter like me, flat on her back." |
