VICTORIA'S SECRET WAR IN HEAVEN PRELIMINARY ROUND 2
4. Gigi Hadid vs Elsa Hosk
(Words: Cas, Results: Lookout!)
Gigi:
(22, 5’10, 3:5 FCBA, The Fighting Academy)
Elsa:
(28, 5’9, FCBA Debut, Free Agent)
BEFORE:
Gigi stirring plenty of controversy this past month when a video started circulating online of her supposed mocking of a statue of Buddha by ‘squinting her eyes’ in casual imitation, with netizens seeing racist insinuations. The Chinese media apparently in an uproar, and a visibly shaken Gigi emerges from backstage without so much as a smile or wave to the crowds. Thankfully though this preliminary event held in sunny Hawaii, and the crowds here don’t seem the least bit bothered by Hadid’s intentions.
The question of whether Gigi will make it all the way to the end of this tournament and the actual fashion show held in Shanghai this year still remains a mystery. In any case, the lanky model must have been instructed by her team not to speak to any reporters, because she heads straight for the ring steps without pausing for questions, and starts to prep in her own corner in navy blue bikini and red gloves.
Her opponent tonight is a fellow Victoria’s Secret veteran of the runway, with gorgeous Elsa Hosk cutting a similar contrast to her opponent tonight, the Swedish blonde emerging from the curtains in baby blue lingerie and yellow gloves, home colours meant to inspire and represent. Elsa decidedly more friendly than her counterpart tonight, stopping by reporters when asked for her comments…
“Oh yes - I think it’s just HORRIBLE what she did. I mean… I would NEVER insult and offend another country’s culture in that manner, especially if I’m going to be one of their guests come December…”
Poor Gigi’s eyes are going wide with horror at the mention of her past transgressions ring-side - it seems like no matter what, she just can’t escape the controversy… Things of course heat up almost immediately when Elsa mounts the steps and steps into the ring, Gigi immediately striding towards her opponent, shoving her backwards with two hands and a “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT, B*TCH??”*
Smirking Elsa just laughs in her face but doesn’t retaliate, knows the psychological warfare already working its magic. Besides, the referee is herding Gigi back to her corner, but anger not seeming to abate that easily, and this could work either way for the American tonight. Well, let’s find out - the crowd is jeering for the referee to start so we HERE WE GO:
ROUND 1:
For all intents and purposes, both girls look the same and mirror movements as they start their jab jab jab offence seems to suggest they fight the same way as well. Gigi known for her technical show but make no mistake - this girl can brawl if she wants to. Elsa on the other hand jabbing at her opponent’s head and hitting guard most of the first minute, perhaps playing things cautious - this is her debut after all, and the Swede seems more content about staying alive rather than do something reckless here. Gigi tries to exploit towards the middle of the round, perhaps not liking this mirror dance of I-jab-you-jab-I-jab… you get the idea… Hadid wades in and around Elsa’s jab at last moment, takes the blonde by surprise with burst of punches into her body, and then tries to snap her head back with uppercut to the chin designed to knock her head out of the park and score a homerun in the very first round… no dice: Elsa weaves to the side and the blow misses by a mile. Hosk striking back with a one-two PUH GRHH PUH of leather into Gigi’s face, and just like that SHE LOOKS HURT! Hadid stumbling as Elsa has the rest of the round to have her way with her, pounding on the body danger close and slamming away at her guard, driving her back to the ropes. But the bell rings and saves Hadid from more humiliation. But what a round, with Elsa certainly dominating the audience’s attention without even meaning to!
ROUND 2:
Gigi mouthing ‘F*ck f*ck f*ck’ mid-round, determined to get her mojo back but not knowing exactly how to. Hook rising briskly looking to take another round from her under nose. Bell rings and here we go again. Girls stride to each other with arms raised high. Hosk moving decidedly faster, drawing back right cross to smash her face in and resume beating, but doesn’t anticipate Gigi’s own right hand filling her peripheral vision until it’s too late - right hand SMACKS into Elsa’s beautiful face and just like THAT Elsa’s hurt! What did I tell you with these two blondes? They’re taking turns going at each other but I suspect mutual weakness and holes in defence leave them with little choice but to turn to retreat mode once ONE particularly hard shot lands. Elsa now covering up and Gigi’s turn to advance on her, again whacking away underneath, shooting uppercuts in and out of the Swede’s toned midsection, drawing dull grunts up above. Elsa driven backwards but hands till firing off intermittent jab into Gigi’s face, but doesn’t seem to have stop-power. Gigi’s the one who crowds in close in the last minute, pressing her against the ropes and continuing to jack her fists into Elsa’s sides and cheek. Referee pries the girls apart at the bell and Gigi’s smile is clearly back on her face as she raises a hand high to the crowds. Like we said, their similarities here might be both strengths and weaknesses.
ROUND 3:
Round 3 and already both girls look winded. Still, they’re back in each other’s faces like *that*, both trying to do familiar hat trick and go big from the get go. Elsa shaking up the sequence with a couple of heavy hands straight to middle of Gigi’s guard, and a nasty right hand gurgling her as it lands on tummy. But Hadid refuses to be driven backwards, comes right at the other blonde with a heavy hook combo to her face, and Elsa gets first taste of boxing power applied to the head as Gigi simply knocks her face left and right. Girls end up clinching again middle of second minute, wrestling with each other in the center of the ring. However this time the referee sees no significant action as both girls continue to push and tug on shoulders and not landing many blows except for hiss and huff of hot air on skin. By the time the ref resumes there’s only 30 seconds left on the clock. Still, not stopping the blondes from lunging back at each other: Elsa throwing jab combos at Gigi’s guard, then going after her body with meaty under hooks to the sides, but Hadid takes advantage and again goes after the blonde’s unprotected face, finally having some effect as a nasty right hand pivots Elsa completely off balance and she goes crashing into the ropes. But bell rings and Gigi’s denied her knockdown! Surely a close round for either girl going to Hadid with that last super attack!
ROUND 4:
Gigi clearly switching into survivor-mode as she’s more hesitant to brawl this round, instead letting Elsa come to her and keeping the blonde at bay with long jabs. Smart strategy here - Hadid knows she’s in the lead and maybe just needs to outbox her rival. Elsa looks pissed off, however, as she realises what’s happening, picks up the pace towards middle of the round and just goes BARRELLING towards Hadid with shocking and powerful blows. Gigi not ready for the storm as she has to hastily deflect or absorb the torrent of hooks thrown at her forearms and then plugging gloves landing on her tummy. Particularly nasty blow bunches her up and that’s the opening Elsa’s looking for, getting in close and just BURIES her to the belly left right left right, eager look on Hosk’s face as she just drives her elbows in and out and roots Gigi to the spot. This b*tch’s going nowhere! is what’s going through her mind. Hadid mewing and groaning, but has the sense to clinch forward, wrapping arms around chest and denying those tummy torturing punches. Elsa now growling with frustration as she’s the one being pushed backwards, her prior exertion now allowing Hadid to dictate terms. Gigi showing her skill and experience here, letting the time tick away as she tries to rest and recover from damage, sucking in air on the blonde’s sweaty shoulder. Not her round, that’s for sure, but she manages to stave off a potential rout in the fourth.
ROUND 5:
Slow round to start as battered bodies strain and groan just from standing back to feet. Still, mutual disdain pushes the girls forward. Gigi by the way ignoring the jeers and insults through all these rounds so far, the Chinese visitors living up to their reputation for rowdy behaviour, occasionally shouting at ill-opportune times and distracting Gigi from full concentration on her foe. Girls fire off jabs again once they get in range, taking turns snapping punches into button noses and grazing the lips and chin, whittling each other away bit by bit. Elsa suddenly goes big with a right swing from the side, and Gigi barely has time before she bobs back and the hook sails past. She takes the opportunity to swing a skilful return hand under and up, SMACK on the chin of Elsa! Elsa dazed as her momentum all screwed up: body still rotating on heels whilst head snaps backwards. She stumbles back trying to retain her balance. And this is Hadid’s freakin’ chance: here she comes, not letting Hosk get away with burying lefts and rights into her midsection, retribution on her mind as she pounds in and up, drawing dull groans from the Swede as she tries to cover up with both arms but can’t stop the attacks. Hadid going full throttle as she continues to attack the body, then final blow to the chin LIFTS Hosk into the air as she’s KNOCKED onto her back! KNOCKDOWN!
Classic Gigi-style, if we haven’t seen it before. Make no mistake, effective and aggressive as always, this girl is. No wonder she’s been tipped as the next big thing by various media organisations. She returns to corner and catches her breath, trying her best to ignore the torrent of shouts and screams and protests ringing in either ear behind and around her. F*ck if she cares - she’s the one standing and Elsa Hosk is the one still squirming on all fours on the f*cking ground. Referee counting her all the way to the end, reaches 10 and Elsa’s body still trembling from shock as she doesn’t make it pass her knees. It’s over!!
Official Decision: Gigi Hadid defeats Elsa Hosk via KO5!
AFTER:
Chorus of both boos and cheers meet Gigi’s victory here tonight - she looks too tired to give a crap anyhow, raising a celebratory fist to the audience before immediately making to leave the ring. If anything, Hadid’s proven her naysayers wrong tonight - she certainly looks like a champ and has every right to be part of the Victoria’s Secret fashion line-up, if we had any say in it.
Elsa Hosk on the other hand not having the most spectacular debut tonight, but what do you expect when you go up against a top-ranked fighter like Gigi? Some pundits already expressing their positive impression of the toned and hard-hitting swede - if she can go toe-to-toe with someone like Gigi, she certainly has a future here in the league. For now, it’s Gigi who advances in the bracket, facing off against Russian vixen Irina Shayk in the next round of the VS tournament.
