Ariana Grande vs. Avril Lavigne
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout)
BEFORE:
You wouldn't think there'd be a lot at stake in this one, as one fighter is ranked 114th, has lost eight in a row, and hasn't won a fight in almost exactly two years, while the other isn't ranked at all, has NEVER won a fight, and hasn't even been in the ring since June of 2010...but, you'd be wrong. There's plenty of importance involved here for both fighters, as the former, Ariana Grande, is trying to get a once-promising career back on track, and the latter, Avril Lavigne, is making what's certainly going to be a final effort to have some in-ring success after spending the last seven years in the Front Street front office. And, both fighters are well aware of what this fight could mean.
"Yes, I've had some bad results lately," says Ariana. "But, I'm still the girl who beat Dove Cameron and AJ Lee. As far as Lavigne is concerned, the only bigger question than why she left the cushy job she had at Front Street is why in the world she'd want to make a comeback fight against ME."
"She really does think a lot of herself," says Avril with a smirk, "For a girl who's lost eight in a row. Yes, it's been awhile for me, but I KNOW I can do this. And, tonight, I'm going to prove it. Finally. I'm going to prove it."
ROUND ONE:
Ariana gets on her horse immediately. She's bouncing, circling, snapping jabs. Avril needs to find a way to slow her down, but can't come close to doing it. The younger girl is just so quick and athletic. As the round goes on, Grande gets more aggressive. She's stopping, popping, putting together long, hard, accurate flurries, peppering the Canadian with leather. Avril covering up, trying to counter, but not managing to do it. This is not good. Lavigne looking waaaayyyy too slow to compete with Grande. And Ariana knows it. She's all about movement, dancing around, sticking the jab in Avril's face, even taunting the blonde Sugar Ray Leonard style late in the round, sticking out her chin and pulling it back when Lavigne tries to punch. It's domination for the brunette and humiliation for the blonde in the first, with Grande having taken it wide when the bell rings.
ROUND TWO:
Ariana right back to dancing, jabbing, circling as the second starts. Avril, who looked more than a little flustered in the first, is keeping the hands up, trying to work the feet and cut the ring. Grande making that all but impossible with her quick, fluid movement. Question now becomes the blonde's psyche. There has to be plenty of scarring there from all the other opportunities, ones she thought she could take advantage of, only to find herself, once again on the canvas or on her knees. Jab, jab, jab. Into Avril's face. A stop. A quick flurry forcing Lavigne to cover up. Then, Grande back to moving. Avril trying to stalk, get the ring cut, finally does. Goes body. Ariana fires back, landing a hard right and AVRIL ROCKS HER WITH A LEFT HOOK! Ariana stumbling, staggering, and Lavigne lets loose a barrage of leather with NINE FREAKING YEARS OF FRUSTRATION BEHIND IT AND DOWN GOES ARIANNA! Grande is down! Grande is down! Avril quickly to a neutral corner to watch as Ariana pushes up to left elbow and haunch...AND CAN GET NO FURTHER! Grande can't beat the count and it's OVER! It's OVER! And you're winner by KO2 is Avril Freakin' Lavigne!
AFTER
Crowd just going NUTS. Everybody in the place, save for the hardcore Grande supporters feeling good for the Canadian, who stands, mid-ring, with tears pouring down her face. Nine years. Nine years of frustration all ended by that vicious final flurry. Tears still unashamedly flowing during the post-fight interview. "I can't tell you how good this feels," the blonde says, smiling, shaking her head. "I can't tell you. All this time. No wins. A failure. The punchline of jokes. All this time. But, this isn't the end. Count on that. This isn't about one fight and getting one win. This is a COMEBACK. CALL it a comeback, because that's what it is. This is the beginning. Don't leave your seats. Because it's going to be a great ride!"
