BBU Flyweight Championship Cheryl Cole (Champion) vs Jade Thirlwall (Challenger) (Lioness Club vs Frankie's Foxes) (20-18, 15 KO vs 5-2, 5 KO) Results: Lookout!; Story: Vassago
BEFORE: The battle for Tyne & Wear flyweight supremacy reaches it's climax here tonight in the Metro Radio Arena as Cheryl Cole defends her BBU championship against fellow Geordie Jade Thirlwall who infamously annihilated the former Girls Aloud singer back in December 2014. Back then several pundits questioned whether that results officially changes the boxing guard up in the North but Cheryl has defied all the odds going on a successful rampage across the Atlantic. Meanwhile Jade has also ventured onto the American market but hasn't achieved an elite status like her fellow Geordie opponent.
The stakes are ultra-high tonight, one could say that Cheryl's revenge mission is even more important than actually defending the belts. BBU TV's Denise van Outen claims that Thirlwall handed down the biggest beating of Cole's career and that says a lot given that Dannii Minogue trounced her in equally brutal fashion not once but twice back in the day.
Cheryl enters the ring full of confidence and vows to knock Jade's head off tonight but the younger brunette is up for the task: "I've wrecked her once before, I can do it again! Just let me at her!"
Cheryl Cole wears a black bikini top, leopard print knickers and white gloves. Long dark brown hair tied in a half-up ponytail. Jade Thirlwall wears a silver bikini set and blue gloves. Long light brown hair with blonde flashes tied in a high curly ponytail. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the flyweight division.
Round 1: Both girls waste little time in cranking up the action as the punches fly thick & fast during the opening minute. Cheryl's well known for putting the hammer down early and she seemingly tries to slam dunk Jade with a single punch alas the younger singer displays great movements and ducks underneath the assault only to target Cole's exposed midsection instead. Indeed, Cheryl's almost too occupied on offense and allows Jade to channel plenty of success downstairs however one must remember how the first match-up quickly blew up in the veteran's face. Still, Cheryl applies the swaming attitude even though she fails to dismantle Thirlwall's guard and most of her production bounces off the stubborn guard. Jade's body strikes make the champion think better off it come the final minute as the action slows down a little but it's the Little Mix singer who delivers the last meaningful series as she rips into Cole's liver area and wobbles her on her heels right at the bell.
Round 2: More Geordie heat on display in the second as Cheryl races out of her corner to connect with Jade's face and this time the South Shields lass fails to cover up for the assault which drops her on the heels and fuels the champion's head hunting galore. Uh-oh! Cheryl snaps Jade's head back & forth and gets a little vocal as the punches cash in numbers; Thirlwall has to yield real estate and escapes the swarming stanza but Cole is right after her and bulldozes her into the corner where she smacks more crisp punches straight up the middle. She bends the Little Mix brunette forward and avoids getting clinched while pounding away at the tummy. She makes Jade yelp in pain but there's little that the challenger can do to avoid such a rough treatment and it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Cole is indeed an improved fighter compared to December 2014 when she admittedly suffered an upset loss at the hands of the fellow Geordie. The dissecting of Jade's midsection is only halted by the bell and she looks a bit uneasy when walking back to her corner where bandmates Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards try to calm her down.
Round 3: Cheryl believes she's rattled Jade's cage with that impressive performance in the second but the Foxes have come with a different plan here in the third and the champion is forced to chase the younger singer around the ring during a hectic but otherwise ineffective opening minute. "You bytch! Come out and fight!", Chezza begins to lose her temper and tries to lure the fellow Geordie into a proper attack but Jade takes advantage of her superior agility and frustrates the Newcastle audience with overly defensive approach. Cheryl's short fuse eventually leads into one of her countless jabbing approaches to go awry and she loses her footing while only grazing the challenger's flesh; Jade jumps into a counter-punching drill and blasts the older brunette across the mouth before adding a quick strike to the solar plexus. Ugh! Both girls clash in close range again on the two minute mark but it's Thirlwall who finds a better punch and uppercuts Cheryl's chest before flicking a left cross on the brow ridge. The champion can't find her range as she lags on the heels and Jade cleans out her tummy in a furious jabbing display which wobbles the older woman back to the ropes when the clock expires. Game on!
Round 4: Jade has found another wind in her sails and tackles the Geordie's finest to the body to immediately stack the champion on her heels. Cheryl got beaten to the punch and she still gives away too much speed and agility to a girl nine years her junior but Thirlwall's defensive struggle was never predicted to last for much longer. Either way, the injection of pace still caught the former Girls Aloud member by surprise and she gets truly hacked to the body as Jade's so committed to her attack she actually headbutts her foe after leaning onto her too much. The referee doesn't force a break as he prefers the girls to settle it the Geordie way but Chezza gets clipped on the chin again and finally wobbles to the ropes with Jade thumping her to the body in relentless fashion. The champion begins to groan in discomfort and clinches the South Shields operator but it doesn't stop Jade from blasting Cole's breadbasket into a mush and at the bell we have one aching BBU flyweight champion with the Metro Radio Arena audience cheering the Little Mix singer a little louder than before.
Round 5: Lioness Club head trainer Mel B. urges the champion to stick to her roots and simply attack Jade on all fronts. Easier said than done and the challenger's speedy approach has given Chezza a handful tonight despite the fight still being an open contest. Both women tangle in the center of the ring as they seek no respite from the high-octane action however Jade's left arm gets wrapped by Cole's elbow and the challenger gets half-turned to the side before the champion stuns her with a vicious cross on the nose. Another one finds the brow ridge and wobbles the younger brunette to her heels with a whimper! Cole moves onto the front (left) leg and hauls in more head-hunting series that forces Thirlwall on the back foot and into evasive action. Still, she tries to jump on the counter-punching drill and gets involved into a classic brawling display down the stretch. That's a tactical mistake according to Denise van Outen and Cheryl make her pay for that when she tears a patch above the right brow ridge with intense hooking that slice through the high guard a little easier than before. Jade gurgles in her efforts to deliver the head strikes herself but gets blocked off and when Chezza digs her elbow into her tummy, she gets caught out by a ripping cross to the liver that folds her into spasms and allows the champion to pummel her back to the ropes thereafter. Only the bell halts the champion's offensive drive and the ref has his hands full while trying to wrestle Chezza back amid more verbal abuse between her and Thirlwall's bandmates in the Foxes' corner.
Round 6: The see-saw nature of this contest leaves little room for complaints and sparks fly early in the sixth again as both girls square off in the center of the ring. Cheryl reverts back to the head-hunting pursuit while Jade slips through with some body shots. It's a battle of strenght more than anything else as they abandon their defense and pour punches into each other in a classic flyweight slugfest brawl. Jade makes the champion scowl when she drills her tummy but leaves that extra room open upstairs and Cole's painfully effective as she adds to the swelling above the right bridge and then NAILS the challenger with a left hook on the ear. Ugh! Thirlwall half-spins to the side with a whimper but also sinks on her knees and for once she doesn't find the footwork neccessary to avoid the looming leather rush. And Chezza delivers the big strike when she SLAMS a left/right combo on the nose before adding a brutal uppercut on the chin. Oi, Jade! The Little Mix singer bellows out into spasms and rolls down the curtains with both arms but there's still time for Chezza to smoke her with another hook that sends the gumshield flying off to the boards... The challenger goes all timber AND CRASHES DOWN ON HER BACK amid a wild cheer from the Metro Radio Arena audience!!! And it's a nasty one as poor Jade struggles to embrace the dizziness and can do absolutely nothing to escape the ineviteable moments later!!! KO6 and STILL your BBU flyweight champion Cheryl Cole!!!
AFTER: Cheryl shouts repeatedly at the fallen opponent and plants her foot on top of her tummy before Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock can do anything about it. The reigning champion keeps shouting at the Little Mix entourage but she's gotten her revenge tonight and has every right to be proud of her performance: "How about that! She's frickin' toast! There's only one true Geordie Queen and I guess we're done with the impostors now? Gawd, I'd wanted this soooo much!"
Denise van Outen believes this result might remove any doubts regarding Cheryl's Fighter Of The Year status at the upcoming BBU Awards but the Geordie stunner has little time to enjoy her epic title defense as she's scheduled to fight Ashley Tisdale over in America next weekend. On the other hand Jade needs to be revived by both Perrie and Leigh-Anne and only Mel B. advice prevents Chezza from tackling the Little Mix gang on her own. Still, the damage has been done and Jade's presence as the top Geordie fighter in the BBU suffered a lethal blow here in Newcastle tonight. There's simply no stopping Cheryl Cole around these places and she might have finally earned herself the honor as the true #1 star of the female celebrity boxing in the UK at the expense of Jenna-Louise Coleman and fan-favorite Samia Ghadie. Roll on #GeordiePower!!!
Final result: Ch Cheryl Cole def. Jade Thirlwall KO6.
