Before: “Wow! I’ve barely been here a year and I’m fighting a former bantamweight champ!” Kira Kosarin happily exclaims to the press in pre-fight. “Isn’t this sport cool! I mean I’m only on my 6th fight and here I am fighting a proven winner. I know I’ll be the underdog, but, hey just suppose I win! I can see the headline now: ‘K.O. Kira Takes Out Savage Shay Mitchell! Upset of the Year!’.”
Shay Mitchell bemused by all this: “Well, I don’t think I much like being called ‘Savage Shay’. It’s not like I am bloodthirsty or something.”
“Would you like ‘Sweet Shay’ better?” Kira helpfully inquires. “And, you know, I just love knocking out you Puncher girls. I put Sasha Pieterse and Vanessa Ray on the deck. All I have to do is beat you and Troian Bellisario and I’ll have made a clean sweep of PLP bantams. At least I think so. You girls aren’t hiding another one are you?”
“Melissa Benoist,” Shay said with some irritation.
“Oh, yes, her, well, I was ready for the best bantams the Punchers can offer, so that’s why I’d rather fight you and Bellisario. But I’ll get to Benoist eventually.” Kira said chattily.
“I am sure she will appreciate that,” Shay said drily. “I think it is only fair to remind you that the most impressive win you’ve had so far is Blake Lively. I am NOT Blake Lively. I think you will discover why you are the underdog in this fight.”
“I guess so, but everyone loves an ‘Underdog Kicks Bad Girl Butt’—not that I think you’re a ‘bad girl’—but you know, it’s a classic meme,” Kira continues.
“I am most certainly not a ‘Bad Girl’—though you are turning me into an ‘Irritated Girl’ with all this trash talk,” Shay snapped.
“Oh, gosh, sorry, I didn’t realize you girls have no sense of humor. That’s what Cassi Scerbo of the Bazz Fight Club was telling me at the FCBA Halloween Party,” Kira observed innocently.
“I would not be listening to Cassie Scerbo. She really is a pest,” Shay grumbled.
“She said you got too mean I should soak your lingerie drawer in butterscotch pudding. She’s got this thing about butterscotch pudding you know.” Kira replied informatively.
“That better not happen,” Shay said growing even more irritated.
“Oh, I would never do that,” Kira assured her, “but I think it would be funny to wake up one morning and find your thongs and bikinis floating in pudding.”
“Well, I wouldn’t and I warn you. I don’t appreciate having my panties threatened,” Shay retorted.
“Oh, of course. Well, like I said. I would never do such a thing. I will just settle for ruining your evening by beating you up. I think that would be perfectly fair,” Kira said.
“I look forward to stuffing my glove in your big mouth,” Shay huffed. “I have heard more than enough out of you.”
“Then my work here is done,” Kira said, “I will see you in the ring and maybe they’ll have to call you ‘Suffering Shay’ after I get done with you.”
“You better get out of here before I decide to start the fight early!” Shay seethed.
“Oh, the Front Office would hate that, See you ‘Sweet Shay’ don’t let the butterscotch get into your briefs!” Kira giggled and exited as Shay turned red and all but stomped her foot before exited the stage herself.
So far as is known, no Shay Mitchell undies were found to be soaked in butterscotch pudding before the upcoming PPV, but the veteran was not in a good mood as she came to the ring. She was wearing a shiny black one piece with cut-outs with red boots and gloves (black laces). Shay’s hair is pulled back in a ponytail. Kira has chosen a black one piece with sheer sides. She had white gloves and boots with black laces. Her hair in is a ponytail. Shay looking Kira up and down with evident distaste. Kira smiling as though pleased she’s gotten under the veteran’s skin, but doesn’t blink under Shay’s glare. Referee seems a bit nervous as he hurries through instructions. Glove tap turns into a loud SMACK heard in the furthest reaches of the arena. The two ladies then march to their corners. The bell rings.
R1: Kira and Shay plunge right into it as soon as they get into range at mid-ring. Both start with a hammering attack to the body. Shay doing her best to push Kira back, but the younger woman digging in and punching back. Kira starts slipping some quick overhand shots that slide over Say gloves and into the Puncher’s face. Shay goes after Kira’s face, but Kira’s moving that upper body well and getting in more counters to make Shay pay for her aggression. Kira then works Shay’s ribs before a sudden shift to her chin. Shay losing steam late as she grows more cautious. Kira trying for the head, but Shay able to block most of these and holds Kira off to the bell. Judges award round to Kira, but it is a close margin.
R2: Shay not liking Kira’s aggression and she seeks to crush it early. Shay out quickly, circles around Kira with her dukes up, and then pulls a sudden counter circle. Kira is off balance and Shay blasts her with a right to the jaw. Kira sent reeling back, arms pinwheeling until she hits the ropes with her back. Shay pounces as Kira desperately covers up and huddles against the strands. Shay churning punch after punch into Kira’s left side as she presses her right side against the ropes, Shay moves to the side and tries to get through Kira’s face-in-gloves, but she can’t seem to break through. Shay does succeed in pushing Kira along the ropes and seems to be aiming to get her into the nearest turnbuckle. Kira seems to realize this danger and stops, She then has to endure Shay’s rain of leather to the bell. After the bell, Shay steps back looking more frustrated than satisfied. A groggy Kira peels herself off the ropes and trudges to her corner. It’s a shutout round for Shay Mitchell, but she’s not too happy because the rookie was still standing at the bell.
R3: No surprise that Kira is defensive as this round gets going. Shay in close, punching hard to break Kira down, but Kira’s countering well. Shay gets a glove stuffed into her mouth and her cheeks are reddening from Kosarin blows. Shay tries to adjust and still keep up the pressure, but Kira seems to regaining her confidence and is slowly moving back to the offense as she blunts Shay’s attacks. Shay fighting back hard, but Kira’s now working the belly and ribs and making Shay fall back before trying to come in again. Brisk back and forth as the two grind it out, but Kira continuing to tag Shay’s cheeks and forcing her to the defensive. Kira able to grind out a close win as the round comes to an end. Kira giving Shay an “I’m back!” grin and Shay doesn’t like it. She takes a step towards the impudent rookie, but referee jumps in and restores order.
R4: Shay looking very determined as she comes out this round, but Kira looks equally determined. Shay strikes first with some straight rights and lefts into Kira’s breast line. Kira knocked back, but instead of responding by going jugg herself, she makes a feint at Shay’s chest, but then smacks her with a hard right to jaw. Shay knocked back, but recovers quickly and uses her jab to break up Kira’s follow up head shots. Kira starts to circle, looking for chances to strike at Shay, but Shay is moving with her an even more sharp-eyed. Suddenly both think they see openings, Kira steps forward to drive a right into the center Shay’s face, but Shay moves her head to the side so the punch whistles passed her ear and brings a counter right smashing into Kira’s temple. DOWN GOES KIRA! Lights out as Kira just crashes forward like a rag doll and lies sprawled on her face. Shay now has a look of satisfaction as she heads for the neutral corner and the referee moves in. As bad as the impact on the canvas was, it does seem to have brought Kira back to some degree of her senses. She pushes herself into a kneeling position and kneels there shaking her head. Then, as the referee reaches “EIGHT!”, Kira rises until she is fully on her feet at “NINE!” Fight resumes, but Kira not about to give Shay another chance. Kira maintains and keeps Shay at a distance by backpedaling away with some skill. Kira survives, but the knockdown assures Shay the round by a wide margin.
R5: Shay smelling blood, comes bouncing out of her corner, clearly ready to finish off Kira. Kira’s gotten a lot of attention from her corner crew during the break and she comes out moving a lot better than observers were expecting. Shay trying some hooks to the belly to bring down Kira’s guard, but Kira not buying. Then Shay tries a fast circle around Kira, but Kira moves even quicker to block the move and then brings a beautiful lightning strike right uppercut into Shay’s chin. DOWN GOES SHAY! Shay caught flush, totters back and then comes down hard on her butt. Shay looking up at Kira with dulled, blinking eyes as Kira looks down at her for a moment before trotting over to the neutral corner. Shay shaking off the chin shot lets the count go to “SEVEN!” before she starts to rise and is safely on her feet by “EIGHT!” Action resumes hay tries to respond with an aggressive jab as Kira comes back at her. Kira forcing Shay back, but she can’t quite get her on the ropes as she clearly would like. Shay steadying herself to ride out the rest of the round and keep Kira from taking her down again. Kira now has a matching knockdown on her side of the judges’ cards as wins the round wide.
R6: Shay striking back in the new round. She across the ring fast and tries to overwhelm Kira with quick punches to head and body in alternating blows. Kira struggling to cope with the ever-shifting attack pattern, but she hangs in and sticks to her jab. Shay trying to ignore the counters as she tries to keep the pressure mounting steadily, but Kira striking at first the right eye and then left which disrupts Shay’s advance. Then Kira goes to the belly with some hard hooks that have Shay tipping forward as she gasps for air. Shay’s looking momentarily confused and in that moment, Kira drops down and brings a right up from around her ankles and into Shay Mitchell’s chin. OMG! Shay’s boots lifted off the canvas as her body arches backwards, her mouthpiece goes flying and her arms drop to her side. Shay CRASHES on the canvas with her head and shoulders landing first and then rest of her body following. Ringsiders swear they feel the ring shake from the impact. Kira Kosarin just standing there looking down in astonishment at the sleeping Shay. Referee then shoos Kira to the neutral corner and starts to count. Shay is slowly stirring, eyelashes fluttering and chest heaving, but it’s clearly not going to get her up on time. “EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN!...SHE’S OUT!”
THE WINNER: KIRA KOSARIN DEFEATS SHAY MITCHELL KO6!
After: “WOO WOO!” cries the victorious Kira Kosarin “I KNOCKED OUT ‘SAVAGE SHAY!’ SHE’s ‘SLEEPY SHAY NOW!’”
Fans seem to love it and cheer the rookie with wild enthusiasm. Stablemate Evangeline Lilly and Bonzo assistant trainer Nadia Bjorlin came into the ring to hug Kira on her big win. Kira was keeping her eye on Shay Mitchell who had been helped to her corner and seemed to be awake, though clearly not very happy. Kira had her gloves removed and hastened over.
“Now, Shay, you don’t want to leave without me showing you off to all my fans—which seem to be growing thanks to you,” Kira said ignoring the icy looks she was getting from Troian Bellisario, Melissa Bemoist and trainer Nia Peeples.
“Okay, okay, you earned it,” Shay muttering getting to her feet.
“You are so going to pay for this!” Troian hissed at Kira.
“And that goes double for me!” Melissa chimed in.
“Oh, gosh, it’s so lovely to be object of so much Puncher attention,” Kira replied gleefully. “However you two will just have to wait. This my time to show off my Big Win. Come along ‘Sleepy Shay’, we got us a Walk to take!”
Kira then got an arm around Shay’s hauled her around the ring. Kira was smiling and waving like a pageant queen showing off the First Runner Up. Shay seem to waver being sullenness and mortification at having been defeated by a mere rookie. It was certainly a night neither Kira or Shay would soon forget.
This definitely has to be called an upset, though “Upset of the Year” might be a bit much. Kira confirms what her win over Blake Lively showed: she’s getting better now with every fight. Not much time left in 2017, but she and Bonzo’s Gym will be looking forward to a very hopeful 2018. A disappointment for Shay Mitchell, but maybe she was just the next fighter to find out how good Kira Kosarin has become. We expect her to bounce back soon and we would not be surprised to see a rematch with Kira in the year ahead. Meanwhile Kira can savor the win and ponder her next move.
