Tennis Boxing from Acapulco
Eugenie Bouchard (5'10", 128 lbs) vs Ajla Tomljanovic (5'11", 146 lbs)
(Canada vs Australia)
(4-2, 3 KO vs FCBA Debut)

BEFORE: Eugenie Bouchard's fall from WTA grace has been well documented over the past couple of seasons however the Canadian stunner remains committed to her career and is regarded as odds-on favorite to take Ajla Tomljanovic down tonight. The Croatian was well poised to take the tennis community by storm before a serious shoulder injury back in 2016 stalled her progress. Based in Australia these days, Tomljanovic is ready to add to Bouchard's misery and secure her maiden boxing triumph in front of a rampant Mexican audience.

Eugenie Bouchard wears a red bikini set and black gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a braid. Ajla Tomljanovic wears a black bikini set and silver gloves. Long dark brown hair tied in a custom ponytail. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the welterweight division.

Round 1:
Tomljanovic may be a mere upstart here but she displays supreme confidence in hassling the blonde around the ring while Bouchard doesn't engage in much offense almost trying to see what the newcomer has in store for her. Ajla delivers several promising punches but fails to build a proper combo assault and gets picked off down the stretch when Bouchard begins to mount her comeback. A couple of nasty hooks catch the brunette on the nose and set her back however the Canadian lacks execution herself and misfires badly come the final minute which allows Tomljanovic to settle down in mid-distance and see out the clock.

Round 2:
More of the same in the second, an early push from the brunette gets neutralized without Bouchard soaking up significant damage before a half-hearted counter-punching drill makes Tomljanovic think better off it. However the brunette doesn't waste much time in hanging back when she realizes that majority of the blonde's punches barely graze her flesh. She leaps at the Canadian and smacks her up the middle before Eugenie delivers a strike to the liver that wobbles the other girl back. Ajla still tries to land her punches and hassles the blonde around the ring but lacks precision and allows the Canadian to stun her with a vicious cross on the chin deep into the final minute. She wobbles forward and wraps herself around the blonde's waist which prevents Bouchard from taking full advantage of that power shot.

Round 3:
Bouchard finally gets more aggressive and begins to swing around Tomljanovic's temples while the Croatian takes her time in mid-range to weather the storm but is unable to match the Canadian's mobility and gets wrapped in a head-hunting assault instead. Genie lets it rip over the top and lands several crisp punches but gets blocked off whenever she tries to put a proper combo together. Ajla gets away with a few clinching attempts that disrupt the blonde's rhythm even though Bouchard still dominates the sheer punching department. Tomljanovic manages to stick a couple of hooks from the back foot but gets walked back to the ropes come the final minute regardless and soaks up a late body punishment which makes Genie yell out in delight at the bell. It doesn't take much to boost the Canadian's confidence these days as she seeks any sort of success both in and out of the ring. Ajla might have been outworked in this round but she doesn't really understand why her opponent suddenly got so excited about it.

Round 4:
Genie tries to trap the brunette in close range again however misfires over the top and gets clobbered with a vicious double cross on the nose instead. Ajla steps it up and leans on the front (left) leg to deliver the juice that rocks Bouchard's head and staggers her in the middle of the ring. A wild hooking follow-up catches the Canadian on the chin and sends her into a tail-spin on the spot. Ajla suddenly crashes down on the stunned foe and thumps her back to the ropes in bulldozing fashion which leaves Genie yelping out in her struggle. She tries to mount a comeback but keeps misfring and Ajla firmly pins her butt-in-ropes with a jabbing galore. She splits the blonde's mitts several times and hauls in more head-hunting success while Bouchard remains trapped on the ropes and resigns into clinching her dominant foe. The referee lets her get away with it for the time being but Ajla vows to finally expose the former Wimbledon finalist as she argues her case with the man in charge.

Round 5:
No clinching here in the fifth as Tomljanovic delivers a hooking BLAST that destroys the blonde's guard literally seconds within the bell and picks up immediate control. Bouchard gets glued to the spot as she soaks up more juice straight up the middle while Ajla cranks it up to the point we only hear the blonde's moaning as she tries to escape the heat. Can she do it? No, she can't and gets pounded back to the ropes where she slumps on jelly knees while the brunette gets vocal in her delivery. She tears a bloody patch over the Canadian's left eye and the relentless pounding eventually breaks Bouchard's resilience WHO TAKES A KNEE just short of the half-distance mark. Ugh! She stares down at the canvas and takes an eight count before getting up. However she remains trapped along the ropes with Tomljanovic resuming the assault. Genie's high guard survives another onslaught but there's no proper comeback to speak of and Ajla picks her off at will which threatens to open the cut over the left eye even further.

Round 6:
Ajla works around that cut early in the sixth while Eugenie simply tries to brawl it out and seemingly catch her foe with a lucky punch but the brunette's methodical punches take their toll and drop the Canadian to her heels before too long. Bouchard groans out whenever she gets hit and soon has to yield real estate with Ajla shouting "C'mon" when she wobbles the other girl off her stance. Genie's guard fails to embrace the Aussie charge on the long run and she trips back to the ropes before Tomljanovic suddenly shifts her focus and tackles her to the body. Bouchard is overwhelmed by the pressure and reverts back to blatant clinching however there's no stopping Ajla anymore as she cleans out the blonde's midsection and leaves her gasping for air at the bell. Another classic death stare from Tomljanovic seems to convince her she's got the Canadian right where she wants her!

Round 7:
Bouchard's physically spend now and can't escape another head-hunting blast anymore; moreover the cut above her left eye begins to bleed again once Tomljanovic secures a quick connection and snaps the blonde's head back repeatedly. Eugenie can't keep her gloves high enough either and gets trapped in the center of the ring with Ajla working her over and leaving little doubts as to what happens next. Bouchard's groans are getting louder and she sinks on her knees one last time before a brutal left hook slams her on the jaw and removes her from further misery... the legs simply collapse from underneath the embattled blonde AND SHE CRASHES DOWN ON HER BACKSIDE!!! She rolls onto her back and shakes her head before covering her face behind the gloves. She's simply had enough here and the ref duly waves it off. KO7 Ajla Tomljanovic!!!

AFTER: This is another bitter pill for the Canadian stunner to swallow and it's safe to say she might never reach the heights from her Wimbledon final and Top 5 ranking days anymore. Modelling for Sports Illustrated still becomes a viable option as seen from her recent Aruba shoot but even Nike has pulled the personal line of clothing deal back and issued a "performance-based" contract. And performance remains the biggest problem for Bouchard who has to rely on wild card entries to tournaments she once was supposed to win with ease.

Meanwhile future looks a little brighter for Tomljanovic who's finally gotten rid of the injury bug and is on the way up in the rankings again. If she puts a string of results like that together she can become the next WTA "go-to-girl" because she has all the tools to make it happen.

Final result: Ajla Tomljanovic def. Eugenie Bouchard KO7.
