Ariel Winter vs. Hayley Williams(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Style matchup of aspiring "young" flyweights. OK, maybe the lovely redhead Williams isn't "young" in sports years, as she'll turn 30 later this year, but, she's only got a handful of FCBA fights, and she's been plenty impressive in those. And, if Ariel, who's just months out of her teens, has more FCBA in-ring experience, that doesn't bother Williams. "Yeah. She's got more FCBA fights than me, but I was scrapping in rings when she was still in middle school. I've been places she's never been and done things she's never done."

"I'm sure she HAS done things I've never done," says Winter. "But, when the night's over, I'm going to have done something SHE'S never done, knocked Hayley Williams on her a**."

ROUND ONE:

Style contrast IMMEDIATELY apparent, as the bouncy redhead is here, there and everywhere. But, this isn't jab and circle stuff, it's less organized, less predictable. Oh, the redhead works the jab to get space, but she's reversing movement, giving ground, bouncing forward, generally making it impossible for the brunette to line her up and get any offense going. Hayley not exactly lighting up the scoreboard herself, but she's making Winter work the feet hard and not letting her get into her game. Instead, they're playing on the singer's field, and Hayley's getting the better of things. Late in the round, Winter's able to cut the ring, close, work a little body, but the redhead acquits herself well on those terms, too, banging back with, then slipping away to leg away the rest of the clock. At the bell, it's no blowout, but it's Williams with the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Williams legging. Winter trying to bring her to battle. A sort of game of cat and mouse develops. Hayley daring Ariel to try to anticipate and take chances to close and square. Brunette doing that here and there, but not opening herself up to Williams offense by doing it too often. Result is more of a two-way round. Hayley getting the better of things on the move, scoring with the jab, occasionally catching the brunette wrong-footed and landing solid combinations. Meanwhile, Ariel running up points when she's able to get the ring cut and get off with the heavy leather. Again, the redhead hangs in when this happens, bangs back for respect, doesn't get bullied, but she's taking the worst of it fighting Winter's fight. Things are tight the entire way, with Winter sealing things late by trapping Hayley against the ropes and banging out the last twenty seconds or so to even the fight at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Williams all hard-to-find as the third begins, again inviting Ariel to take chances and make mistakes. Again, the brunette shows wisdom beyond her 20 years. She picks her spots, not getting baited into getting sloppy. But, she DOES take chances. And, rolls snake eyes. BOOM! Williams wrong-foots the younger woman and ROCKS her with a nasty right hand! Winter GOBSMACKED, stumbling, nearly going down, and the redhead is ALL IN. Williams letting the hands fly, backing up a wobbly Ariel, trapping her against the ropes and giving her a pounding. Referee looking in as Winter, in a high guard, takes flurry after flurry from the determined Hayley. Williams throwing everything in the arsenal at the sturdy brunette, determined to end this this right now. And, while she looks to be one punch away, she can't find the punch. Winter's still standing at the bell. But, it's Hayley wide, and Williams is back on the lead 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Older woman pressing her advantage, letting the hands go early. Winter, with the legs not all the way back, unable to hold canvas. Redhead forces the brunette backward, making her take. BOOM! RIGHT HAND COUNTER and Williams is HURT! A perfectly-placed right hand by Ariel and everything turns on a dime. Now, it's Hayley who's in deep trouble as Winter comes forward and gets the big guns on target. Williams driven backward, giving up all the canvas she took and then some, ending up where she left Winter at the end of the last round, pinned to the cables and taking. Williams has the guard high. And the body on sale. And Ariel's buying in BULK. She's hammering away at the ribs and midsection, tenderizing every piece of meat she can find. To her credit, Hayley takes the punishment, doesn't drop the guard and lasts the round. But, it's Ariel wide and we're even again at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Now, it's Winter looking to consolidate. Well. Not consolidate. It's Winter looking to finish. Without those legs, Hayley's no longer able to bounce around the ring, and, as a result, the brunette can line the redhead up. And, that is NOT good for Williams. Hayley's in retreat from the opening seconds, on the defensive, trying to slow the younger woman with spot counters, but unable to do it. Ariel's locked on and locked in, landing hard, clean shot. A LOT of hard, clean shot. TOO MUCH hard clean shot. DOWN GOES WILLIAMS! It's a three-punch combination punctuated by a blistering right hook that sends Hayley down onto her right side. Winter's quickly to a neutral corner to watch and wait while the referee counts. Williams rolls to her belly at five and attempts, several times, to push up to hands and knees, but can't get it done. Finally, with Hayley trying to push to all fours yet again, the count passes her by and it's OVER. And your winner by KO5 is Ariel Winter!

AFTER:

Winter over to check on Williams. Hayley's her kind of girl and this was all professional, not personal. After that, it's a lot of smiling and no snark in the post-fight. "She's really quick, very athletic, and hits harder than you'd think," says the brunette. "It's no wonder she's got a record like she does. She's better than most of this division. She's just not better than ME."
