Eiza Gonzalez versus Amber Heard(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Blonde/brunette poster fight has some interesting implications. Gonzales is, no question, in a slump, having failed to grab results in her recent outings, leaving some to wonder what her future is in an Odds and Ends lightweight division that includes Adriana Lima and promising Courtney Tailor. Heard, meanwhile, spent 2017 working her way back from oblivion and into The Fighting Academy, but a recently loss to personal bete noire Zendaya Coleman has blunted her momentum. So, yeah, both of these girls need a win. And, both are determined to get one this evening. "I don't have anything personal against Amber," says a hard-eyed Eiza. "She's just in my way tonight. And, that's not a good place for her to be."

"Eiza," says Amber with a gorgeous smile, "is one of those girls who's been called 'promising' for a long time. Well. 'Whom the Gods wish to destroy, they first call 'promising'."

ROUND ONE:

Eiza likes to work at pageant distance and she loves that long left jab. And, when the brunette beauty gets it on target, she's a tough out. Everything can flow off that long left, which preempts the offense of her opponent, gets her the distance and geometry she wants, and allows Eiza to work her right hand and build up combinations. And, in the first round, that jab is WORKING and it's causing MAJOR problems for the blonde beauty. Gonzalez is catching Heard with the left again and again, piling up points and keeping the older woman on the defensive. Heard has absolutely no answers. She's working hard, trying to get something going, but she can't. Instead, she's being preempted and forced to cover up for almost the entire round. At no point is Amber hurt, but, she can't get off her back foot as Eiza dominates from bell to bell, grabbing the first wide.

ROUND TWO:

Heard HEARS it in the corner. And she listens. Amber moving the feet more, angling now, making it hard for Eiza to find her with that left hand. Complexion of the fight changes completely. We go from one-sided to a good, two-way boxing match. Eiza's still putting punches together off the left, scoring points that way. Heard, though, is now able to get some offense going. She's building combinations of her own, forcing the brunette to cover up in spots, giving as good as she gets. It's good tactical stuff, with plenty of movement and lots of skilled boxing. And, there's not much in it as the round rolls into its final seconds. Then, Heard lands the best punch of the fight so far, a straight right hand. It doesn't hurt Gonzalez, but it does back her up and force her to cover up, allowing Heard to get off a BIG flurry that proves the difference on the cards. Amber grabs the points close to even the fight at 19.

ROUND THREE:

More of the same. Good, two-way boxing between blonde and brunette. It's all about tactics and positioning, as feet move and hands go out and back quickly. Both fighters showing some good defensive skills as well, picking off punches, slipping others. It's impressive stuff, frankly, showing just how talented two girls ranked between 40-50 actually are. It's clear both blonde and brunette have plenty of ability. They just need work and a break or two. But, tonight, one of them is going to get a much-needed victory at the expense of the other, and neither is willing to be 'the other', which becomes clear late in another close round. Both fighters decide to make an effort to grab the round late, resulting in several SPIRITED exchanges that send heads snapping back and sweat flying. And, neither fighter steps back an inch, instead firing back right to the bell. Again, it's close, but, this time it's Eiza, who leads 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Even more two-way action. Becoming clearer and clearer that these two are well-matched. Amber stepping to a bit more in this stanza. She's not exactly crowding Gonzalez, but she's working closer to middle distances, not allowing Eiza to work as much at range, where that deadly left jab is at its most effective. For her part, Eiza has some tricks to get more of that distance, including a drop step that allows her an extra instant to get the left on and combinations started. Plenty of movement and work for geometry in evidence as this one goes on, with both fighters able to get some, but not all, of what they want. For the third consecutive round, we roll into the final 30 seconds with the issue very much in doubt. And, this time, Amber DOES close, working some body, forcing Eiza to back and cover with a series of hard combinations that allow her to claim the points and even the fight again, this time at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Amber likes this whole "close and bang" thing, so she doesn't wait until the late stages of the round to try it. Instead, she comes forward right from the opening seconds getting physical with the younger woman. And, for the second consecutive round, it's a winning strategy. Heard's found something here. She's working some body, then going back upstairs, forcing Gonzalez to cover up, then hammering the body again. Eiza's in reverse from almost the entire round, allowing the blonde to take control of things. She's landing lots of hard, accurate shot, bullying Gonzalez around the ring. Brunette trying to hold canvas, but can't get it done. She's being reduced to countering in spots, while the blonde gets off lusty. Final seconds of the round sees Heard rolling up the score with Eiza trapped on the ropes and taking. At the bell, it's Amber wide and with her first lead of the night, 48-47.

ROUND SIX:

More aggression from Heard. She's getting ALL physical with Eiza now, and Gonzalez doesn't like it a bit. Brunette on the defensive immediately, working hard for some space, but not getting any. Blonde banging away, body, head, back to the body. Brunette giving ground, covering up, trying to find a way to slow this down. Amber's confidence growing with every second as she gains more and more control over the fight. BOOM. Straight right hand followed by a CRUNCHING left hook and DOWN GOES HEARD! Where did that COME from? It's a scintillating counter followed by an absolutely NASTY punch from Gonzalez and it drops the blonde to her back, Eiza quickly to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Referee counting down over a glassy-eyed Amber. Heard finally rolls to her belly, pushes to her feet, stumbles, goes back down to her knees...and it's OVER! The count passes the game but gobsmacked blonde by and it's OVER! And your winner by KO6 in turnabout fashion is Eiza Gonzalez!

AFTER

Eiza shaking her head, smiling in the post fight. "Wow, that was big. I mean, she was really rolling when I caught her. Just managed to get my feet set and I caught her really clean. I knew I had her when that left landed. No WAY was she getting up from that. Who's next? I can't wait to do this again! Who's next?"
