Kelly Rohrbach vs. Taylor Swift(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)
BEFORE:
Classic body-type battle between two tall, beautiful blondes who've had no small amount of FCBA success. Swift has been close enough to the lightweight gold to taste it, while Rohrbach made her bones by grabbing the Ice Hotel in her third FCBA fight. And, as you might expect with girls who've won as much as these two have, there's no lack of confidence to be seen. "Here's the thing with Taylor," says Kelly dismissively. "She can box some and all that. But, she's really just a skinny girl who can't take it to the body. As I'm about to demonstrate."
"Kelly's overrated," says Taylor with a smile. "In every possible way. Talent, looks, boxing ability. And even intelligence. Because, as dumb as people think she is, she's proved she's even DUMBER by signing to fight ME."
ROUND ONE:
Plenty of recon in the first. Ladies set up at range and make with those long jabs. Both have plenty of leg and they use it, not loping around the ring, mind, but angling, circling, turning, all while probing defenses for weaknesses that can be exploited as the fight goes on. Few weaknesses found early. Both ladies show sturdy defenses, keeping the gloves high, getting them out and back quickly. Everybody's extremely sound, setting up punches, moving head, shoulders hands. It's a boxing purist's round, plenty to watch here even if the action isn't fast and furious. And, there's not a lot in it. Both blondes giving as good as they get, neither able to get much of an advantage over the other. Closing seconds sees the best exchange of the round, with both ladies landing hard right hands just before the bell. When it rings, it's Kelly who's, by the slimmest of margins, grabbed the points and the 10-9 lead.
ROUND TWO:
Swift getting in rhythm early. She's POPPING that left jab home now, snapping Kelly's head back with it, then following on with hard right hands. All of a sudden, Rohrbach getting lined up and, as a result, touched up. Swift's got the range and she's throwing out consistent, heavy, accurate fire that's got Rohrbach unable to get off, and, eventually, thrown completely to the defensive. By mid-round, Swift is backing her rival up with sharp combinations that have Rohrbach, if not hurt, a little buzzed. Singer has an opportunity here, and she's not wasting it. She dials things up to eleven, committing on punches, tossing flurry after flurry, backing Kelly into the ropes and spending the final 45 seconds of the round absolutely working her OVER. Again, Rohrbach not hurt, but she's definitely hurting by the bell. It's Swift wide, of course, and things are even at 19.
ROUND THREE:
Taylor's taken complete command here and Kelly seems to have no idea what to do about it. For Swift's part, the singer's found something that works, and she's doubling down on it. It's all about that left, a left that Rohrbach just can't seem to avoid. It finds her over and over again, and, when it does, bad things follow, in the form of Taylor's right hand. From there, Swift builds her flurries, scores her points, forces her rival to cover up again and again. Rohrbach's corner shouting for their fighter to move, to get off, but, while she's doing some of the former, she's doing almost none of the latter. Instead, Swift's dictating, moving Kelly around the ring, stinging her over and over again. Still, Kelly's not hurt. The legs never wobble. But, damage is definitely piling up, and it can't go on like this much longer. The bell, mercifully, ends it, at least for a moment. But, Swift's grabbed another wide and leads 29-28.
ROUND FOUR:
Rohrbach hears it in the corner, comes out aggressively. She's stepping to Taylor now. Wants to get physical. Not going to stay out on the end of that jab. It works. QUICKLY. BOOM! Rohrbach a right hand and Taylor's GOBSMACKED! That quickly, the fight turns a 180 and Swift is in full retreat. And, now it's Kelly's turn to dial this thing up to 11. Rohrbach just letting the hands GO, hammering away at a listing SS Swift, paying her back in full for rounds two and three, sending her reeling back into the cables. Swift forms the tight earmuff and hangs on desperately. She puts the body on sale, and Kelly starts buying in bulk, working over the abs and flanks, then going back upstairs to search for the finisher. Referee watches closely as Tay-Tay tries to survive the siege. Final seconds sees a BLISTERING right from Kelly that sends Swift stumbling along the ropes, but, before the ref can step in the bell sounds. Taylor's still standing, barely, but Kelly's won the round wide and evened the cards at 38.
ROUND FIVE:
Rohrbach picks up right where she left off. Swift's in deep trouble, and her fellow-blonde knows it. Kelly stepping to, sitting down on her punches, backing up Taylor with blizzard after blizzard of hard shot. Swift blocking some punches, rolling with others, but she's taking a TON of heavy leather despite her defensive efforts. Singer manages to stay off the ropes for awhile, but Kelly eventually gets her there, and things get worse. With no more ground to give, Taylor's forced into a second siege in as many rounds, and the referee doesn't look like watching much more of this. Swift, buzzed as she is, is well aware of the situation. She's jabbing back here and there, trying to hold the ref at bay while Kelly reefs punch after punch at her trying to finish this thing one way or another. But. She can't get it done. Taylor hangs on to the bell again. When it rings, Rohrbach's claimed another round wide and moved back into the lead, 48-47, but Swift's still in the fight.
ROUND SIX:
Swift giving ground again early. Rohrbach offensive continuing apace. Kelly aggressive, but sound, slowly walking Taylor back. Swift working in counter, but only here and there. Slowly, though, Taylor's legs begin to firm up and she's able to slow Rohrbach down. By a minute in, the pair are fighting on even terms for the first time since the opening round. Swift holding her ground, working the left hand, getting her box on. Kelly continues trying to force pace briefly, but thinks better of it and settles into two-way boxing with Tay-Tay. Goes like this for the next minute or so, good back and forth stuff, with Swift beginning to get into rhythm again. Final minute sees Taylor getting the better of things. These are HER terms, the ones she dominated on in the second and third, and she's taking control on them once again. By the bell, Taylor's made up the early advantage Kelly built and then some, taking the round close to even things at 57.
ROUND SEVEN:
Swift getting on a roll. Punches getting put together again like in her dominant second and third rounds. Rohrbach again struggling for answers. She can't get out of neutral as Taylor throws a flurry that forces her to cover up, and, before Kelly can respond, throws another one. By mid-round, Rohrbach's getting backed up again and Taylor's beginning to feel the oats. Everything's working perfectly. BOOM! Right hand, Swift! And ROHRBACH IS HURT! A straight right from Taylor lands on the button and Kelly stumbles backward. Taylor steps to, lands a three-punch combination and DOWN GOES ROHRBACH! Swift...um...swiftly to a neutral corner so the referee can begin his count. Kelly on her back, staring up at him as the numbers grow larger. Rohrback rolls to her belly at six. Pushes to hands and knees at eight...but can get no further! It's OVER! And your winner by KO7 is Taylor Swift!
AFTER:
Swift a pile of smiles in the post-fight. She had a rough road for a couple of rounds, but, in the end, was able to out-box and stop one of the better lightweights around. "Like I said," Taylor says dismissively, "Kelly's overrated. Oh, she landed a lucky punch, sure. But, even that didn't save her. Because, when she gets in the ring with me, one of us is a future champion, and the other is Kelly Rohrbach." |
