BEFORE:
"Look," says Kate with a smile, "It's not like I have anything to lose, right? So, I'll just go in there and let her have it with everything I've got and see what happens."
"I guess there might be girls who've earned the right to look past someone in the FCBA," says Jane, "But, I'm not one of those girls. I can only look at the girl right in front of me. That's what I've always done, and it's worked pretty well so far."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and that's 'Holding On For Life' by Broken Bells, and here comes our first redhead of the night, the lovely Kate Mara!"
McCarthy: "And, like I said the LAST time she came down this aisle, you can file her under 'typical Dancing Hooker opponent, because she has NO FCBA wins!"
Cassie: "In Kate's defense, she's only had three FCBA fights..."
McCarthy: "And, she lost them ALL, which is exactly why Weirdo has booked her to puff up the record of another of his overrated fighters!"
O'Dell: "Mara into the ring and helped off with the robe. She's wearing that orange number we saw the last time she was here. And, that's 'Pleasant Nightmare' by Alih Jey you hear behind us, and that means 'The Marin County Marauder', Jane Levy is on her way to the ring!"
Tess: "Levy's a girl who doesn't get a ton of press. But, she does a ton of WINNING. She's 19-1 in her FCBA career, and she's definitely in the thick of things in the Front Street flyweight division."
Cassie: "And, if she wants to STAY there, she needs to take care of business tonight."
O'Dell: "Levy into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve. She's wearing that peach bikini we've seen before, and we're about ready to go. Time for some picks. Tess likes Jane. Mac?"
McCarthy: "ZERO FCBA wins. Levy."
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "Ladies in agreement for the first fight of the night. Let's see if they're right. Opening bell sees something we haven't seen before from Mara. She's not jumping all over Levy early. Instead, Kate willing to stay at range and do some boxing. And, Levy's got to be surprised by that..."
Cassie: "Has to be, because Mara's fought in the FCBA three times, and, all three times, she's come out guns blazing..."
O'Dell: "Levy willing to box with at the moment, and that's not usually Jane's game. The Front Street redhead likes to close and bang, and you have to wonder if Kate's fight plan took that into account. One way or another, we're not seeing a slugfest right now, which is what most folks were likely expecting coming in."
Tess: "No, but both fighters actually look pretty comfortable on these terms."
O'Dell: "Indeed, they do. We're heading down the stretch in the opening frame, and there's not a lot in it. Both fighters able to put punches together in spots and neither able to impose will on the other. Ten seconds to go. SHARP exchange there and both redheads landed hard shot at the bell. Close. Mara."
McCarthy: "And the tomato can goes up 10-9".
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Second begins the way the first ended, with both redheads playing against type, working at range instead of looking to close and bang, and, again, the result is two-way boxing in which each fighter is able to get some offense rolling, but neither is able to take control of the fight..."
McCarthy: "If Weirdo's corner people KNEW anything, they'd be telling their girl to get AFTER a girl who hasn't made it to the half way point of a fight in her FCBA career!"
O'Dell: "Right now, Levy content to box with, and, again, she's doing well at it. Mara holding her own, just as she did in the last round. Jane, a former college athlete, moves very well, and she's keeping the gloves high, getting them back quickly, showing some excellent defense that's making Mara's job difficult..."
Tess: "But, Kate's still scoring."
O'Dell: "That, she is. And, one wonders whether THIS Kate Mara might have a little more success than the one who shoves all the chips into the middle of the table immediately. Twenty seconds to go in round two. Ladies going to run out those final seconds doing what they've done the entire fight, getting their respective boxes on, and there's the bell. Close again. Levy."
Cassie: "And, we're even at 19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Into the third now and MARA GOING ALL IN QUICKLY! It's like someone flipped a switch and the older redhead charges Levy and lets the hands fly! Jane being backed up, covering up, taking fire from seemingly everywhere as Kate looks to take control of this thing in a big, big way..."
Cassie: "This just came out of NOWHERE..."
O'Dell: "It certainly did, but the change in tactics is working. Levy's on her back foot, giving ground as Kate gets rolling, putting punches together, stepping to, suppressing her rival's offense with barrage after barrage of punches. Jane jabbing back here and there but looking like trying to ride this thing out at the moment."
Tess: "And, that might be a good strategy, because Mara's sitting down on absolutely everything."
O'Dell: "Indeed, she is. Levy working to stay off the ropes and managing to do that much at least, but she's been in reverse since the opening seconds of the round and Kate's keeping her there. Final seconds of the third running off, and they can't elapse quickly enough for the younger redhead. There's the bell, and Mara BOUNCING back to the corner after claiming the third wide."
McCarthy: "And, believe it or not, the tomato can's back on top, 29-28."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Into the fourth now and Mara right back at Levy and now Jane holding ground and throwing right back and we've got a FIREFIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RING! Ladies letting the hands go in a big way as neither is going to give an inch in front of the other. Some BIG punches landing in there, Mac!"
McCarthy: "And it's not going to last. Can't trade like that for long before..."
O'Dell: "RIGHT HAND, LEVY and Mara is HURT! A straight right from Jane sends Kate stumbling backward! Levy charging forward, banging away, driving Mara into the ropes and letting her have it with both hands! Kate pinned to the cables, keeping the gloves high. Jane responding by going body in a MAJOR way!"
Cassie: "She's doing some serious digging in there, but Mara not dropping that guard..."
O'Dell: "She is NOT. The older red-head taking the punishment and keeping the gloves high. Jane HAMMERING away downstairs, going back up, then back down. She's trying to end it, but not at the expense of punishing her rival and rolling up points. Five seconds to go. Good right from Levy and there's the bell. Jane. Wide."
Tess: "And, we're even at 29."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Levy after Mara as we start the fifth. She's determined to press the advantage, definitely looking to finish now. Kate still a bit wobbly, giving ground, keeping the hands up, looking to slow the Front Streeter down with her jab. Jane not having any. She's walking through Kate's punches, putting the pressure on..."
Cassie: "Definitely the right time to do that. You've got the girl in trouble."
O'Dell: "Levy digging some body. Kate tying her up. Jane levers Mara and ROCKS HER WITH A LEFT HOOK! Kate staggered! Jane stepping to and letting the hands go. Mara wobbled with a right and and DROPPED WITH A LEFT UPPERCUT! An absolutely WICKED left hand from Levy!"
Tess: "And now might be the time for my BFF to sing..."
McCarthy: "THAT we do NOT need!"
O'Dell: "Jane to a neutral corner. Kate flat on her back not moving at all. Count at three. Four. Five. I think Tess is right on this one. Referee's count is just a formality. Seven. Eight. Still no movement from Mara. Nine. TEN! It's OVER! And your winner by KO5 is 'The Marin County Marauder', Jane Levy!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Jane Levy, and, Jane, little bit of a curve ball early...and then another later..."
Jane (nodding): "Yeah. Obviously, you don't expect her to box, because she really hasn't done that. But, you know, she CAN. And, she showed some of that. Then she kind of reverted to form. But. These are the kinds of things that happen in the ring, and you have to be ready for them."
Tess: "And, you WERE ready and you adjusted and got what's a pretty important result, considering how competitive Front Street's flyweight division has become lately..."
Jane (smiling): "Yeah. We've got some talented girls here, and, somehow, I'm under the radar despite the fact that I'm 20-1. But, I can't worry about that. I control what I can control and let the rest take care of itself." |
