Before: “It may have been way back in 2011,” says Ashley Greene, “but don’t think I don’t remember losing that fight with Rachel McAdams. By one lousy point—two if you realize that’s what I needed to win instead of tie. I didn’t even get the tie. It has burned me ever since. Now I hear Rachel could be retiring soon. This is my last chance to do something about that injustice. I am glad she at least had the decency to accept my challenge.”
“I’m sorry, Ashley,” replies Rachel McAdams when her turn at the podium comes. “I had no idea losing to me meant so much to you. I certainly would have agreed to a rematch a lot sooner. Sadly, I don’t think this will turn out any better for you than it did back in 2011, but do your best near and try not let losing get to you.”
“It’s not getting to me. It’s just unfinished business,” Ashley retorts. “This is my last chance to set things right.”
“Whatever you say, Ashley, but it won’t help you beat me,” Rachel said with assurance.
“That’s what you think.” Ashley says with equal assurance.
Fight night finds both fighters look cool and assured. Ashley is in an aquamarine one piece swimsuit with black gloves and boots (aquamarine laces), Her hair is in a simple pigtail. Rachelo is a red and black one piece swimsuit with red boots and gloves (black laces). Rachel has blonde hair tonight. It’s bobbed and wetted down. Brisk ring instructions. Quick gloves tap. Fightes ae in their corners. The bell rings.
R1: Rachel attacking quickly to the body. Quick, smacking hooks to the belly and ribs. Ashley working Rachel’s ribcage, but she adds some surprise shots to the head just to keep Rachel off balance. Rachel responds with some strong hooks to the belly that tips Ashley forward. Then she steps to one side and drives a hard right to the side of Ashley’s head. Ashley goes reeling away, but quickly pulls herself to block Rachel’s attempt to follow up. Rachel circling Ashley who tries to keep with her. Rachel keeps pressure on to the bell and salts the round away by a wide margin.
R2: Rachel and Ashley circling and firing shots from mid-distance to start the action this round. Then Ashley moves in behind straight shots to the forehead to knock Rachel back on her heels. Rachel jabbing hard to slow down Ashley’s advance and makes some progress. Then Ashley goes to Rachel’s midsection with deep, raking hooks. Rachel doubling up and gasping for air. Ashley smacks Rachel’s cheeks with rights and lefts. Rachel rallying with a clip to Ashley’s chin, but Ashley answers with more punching to the ribcage. Rachel slowly gives ground but its an orderly retreat that keeps the round close at the bell. However judges give the round to Ashley Greene.
R3: Ashley returns to working Rachel to the midsection and she’s putting a lot of power behind these shots. Rachel not wanting to hold in against this kind of punching falls back to give herself some distance. Ashley following with the retreat and keeps her leather on Rachel, though she is raising her sights by bouncing shots off the sides of Rachel’s head. Rachel obliged to duck down behind her gloves and she’s not getting off a lot of counters. Ashley keeps up the pressure to the bell and Ashley wins the round wide.
R4: Rachel begins with some aggressive shots at Ashley’s head, but then comes down to strike at her midsection with the hook. Ashley responds with a fast right uppercut to the chin and a swatting left to the jaw. Rachel hit hard by these blows and goes stumbling back. Ashley moves forward snapping quick ones to the face and then down to the body when Rachel moves to cover her first. Ashley settles in to work Rachel’s stomach hard and try to back her into the ropes. Rachel sliding away from the ropes and fights a running battle with Ashley along the ropes before Rachel veers to mid-ring. Ashley stays close and gets in some more shots to Rachel’s head. Rachel protects her head and again leaves her body open for Ashley to work over. Ashley able to rack up a lot of points to the bell, but Rachel still standing though she looks worked over and breathing hard. Rounds goes to Ashley Greene wide.
R5: Rachel again the aggressive one to start the round, but this time she works Ashley to the body and hangs close against her. Ashley seems to find this awkward at first and eatc a lot of McAdams’ punches before she really get her own body punching shots going. Now these showing a lot of intensity, elbows churning in and out like pistons and punches driving hard into straining bodies. Ribs and stomach getting nearly the attention and Rachel pours it on late. Ashley trying to answer, but falters and pulls back just before the bell rounds. Close round bu Rachel McAdams wins it.
R6: Ashley coming in hard, determined to push Rachel back with a sustained body attack, but running into stubborn resistance from the older veteran. Blazing action back and forth, but then Rachel stuns Ashley with deep shots to the solar plexus. Ashley momentarily frozen by the shock of these blows and Rachel goes right for the chin. She swats that chin around like it was a speed bag in the gym. Ashley starts wilting as her knees buckle and Rachel finishes with the ol’ one-two left hook/right cross combo. Ashley’s eyes go blank, arms fall to her sides and she just topples forward to crash against the canvas. Rachel coolly steps over the fallen Ashley and walks to the neutral corner. Ashley struggling to get up as trhe referee counts. She can’t seem to get her body to obey desperate orders to stand up. She realizes she isn’t going to get up. She hangs her head in misery as the referee’s count reaches:
“TEN…YOU’RE OUT!
THE WINNER: RACHEL MCADAMS DEFEATS ASHLEYT GREENE KO6.
After: “Tough luck Ashley,” Rachel McAdams tells her defeated opponent while visiting her as Ashely Greene sits slumped on her stool. “You’re a good fighter. I’ve always known that. Cheer up, I may not be around much longer and you can find opponents you can beat.”
“I wanted to beat you,” Ashley says sourly, but then she smiles. “Thanks for giving me the chance. I guess I should have quit while I was complaining about losing to you by two points.”
“Yes, a knockout is a decisive kind of win, but you did give me a lot of trouble Ashley. You just hang in there and you’ll find plenty of fresh young jobbers to beat up,” Rachel said cheerfully.
Rachel then leaned down and shared a hug with Ashley as she did she whispered: “Some day maybe I’ll tell you how I was hung up on Neve Campbell, but she kept getting the better of me.”
Ashley GreeneL “I may just take you up on that. Save me a rocker on the porch of FCBA Old Boxers Home.”
“I’m not ready for that just yet, but I’ll keep your request in mind.” Rachel said and they both laughed.
As Rachel McAdams walked away she sighed: “I am really going to miss being in this ring. I hope the end doesn’t come too soon.”
The fight was a lively contest between two fine bantamweights. Rachel McAdams showed her toughness by taking a lot of punching from Ashley Greene and coming back strong to win it. No doubt this was a painful loss for Ashley Greene, but there are plenty of bantams around who are not named “Rachel McAdams: she should certainly be able to beat. Word is growing stronger that once Rachel McAdams turns 40 on November 17th her active days in the FCBA will be drawing to a close. This will be a sad day for her many fans, who are also curious about just what her future plans might be…. |
