CAMILLE KOSTEK (26 y/o, 5 ft 8, W: 4, L: 3) vs MANDY MOORE (34 y/o, 5 ft 10, W: 28, L: 34)
(Results: Lookout!, Words: Bonzo)

Before: Young Bonzo prospect Kostek has fought a hard schedule this year, and has the tough losses to welterweight stars Tahnee Atkinson and Hannah Ferguson to prove it. A victory over less prominent new-guarder Bo Krsmanovic has brought her back into contention, and now she’s putting out a challenge to a devilishly experienced veteran. Foxfire’s Mandy Moore is a three-time welterweight champion (Bridget Regan hasn’t won more title than that, either!). Like everybody else, she’s struggled with the arrival of social media/Sports Illustrated/Victoria’s Secret supermodels in the division by 2016 and 2017, but unlike others, Mandy has fame on her side. The unexpected success of “This is Us” has brought Moore into more spotlight than ever before, and a new, more confident, more athletic Mandy has been in the ring since then. Three 2017 wins were promising, but her only 2018 foray was a loss to Cassidy Freeman…despite her fame, there’s not a lot of momentum with Mandy right now. With Kostek, Moore can prove she can compete with and beat all those smashing models…with Moore, Kostek can prove she’s already got what it takes to get past such a crafty, complex fighter like Mandy.

Camille explains: “As you know, Amanda Righetti’s a huge fan of Mandy’s, and that’s not because she’s beaten her four times out of four. According to Amanda, Mandy’s one of the smartest, most eclectic girls in the business. I hope I’m prepared for her work in the ring. Getting past Mandy would be huge…she’s one of the most interesting veterans at welter. She can punish you for every wrong move you make…I’m ready, though!”

Mandy’s got no problems with being praised, but her response’s still marked: “Thanks, Camille. I appreciate the words, sure. Of course, what she’s really saying it that she wants to make a name for herself at my expense. Veteran, crafty…she thinks I’ve reached the stage where youngsters can prove their mettle against me. Oh, Camille, you’re in for a shock. I’m bigger, I’m stronger, I’m more brutal than I’ve ever been. If she thought Antje Utgaard hit her hard, she’ll come out of this in a hazy daze…and I won’t allow a comeback. Make no mistake: Mandy Moore’s here to get back into the title business, nothing else.”

R1: First round action running low on fuel…girls stepping out wary of legit early trades/exchanges – Camille’s off-rope knockout of big, brawny Utgaard, Moore’s early KO credentials against Bjorlin and others putting the option of devastating, humiliating first-round knockouts on the table…so alert welter girls keep their right hands at bay, only feeling out with the jab as they cautiously step, circle around each other. Moore strong-legged, but mobile, working a much brawnier stance than just a decade or so…she ends up firmly in mid-ring territory, with Kostek’s lither, smaller, more agile frame stepping around her. Moore’s guard strong, broad, negotiating around Kostek’s speedy attacks – Camille’s got a fast jab, fast legs, and by late in the first minute, she’s getting to score via some brisk, chop-chop combinations, the jab followed by the right hook, triggered effectively against Mandy’s left cheek…Mandy not shocked, but clearly bothered by these hits.

Moore’s responding work unusually stiff, uncreative for such a sleek boxer like her…she leans into short, driving jabs to apply walk-down pressure, back Kostek off her, but her range’s not quite right and Camille’s allowed to step away, tuck her body in and out of the poke, waiting to catch Moore on her jawline, neck via fast, rocketing counter hooks on both sides. Moore walking forward after these exchanges, but with a slight klutz-ish sluggishness in her legs: there’s some power in Kostek’s breezy punch-work – Camille not properly managed by Mandy’s pressure, legs whirling free around the ring, dropping short, long, wide, inside body hooks inside Moore’s gut, tummy, cuffing her big girl.

No shutout, but Camille’s points accumulating to close advantage, although she’s unable to get Mandy into the ropes…Kostek making good use of her legginess, agility against a strong, slower opponent.

R2: Mandy shifts up a gear, returns with jab-and-grab from her classic arsenal – fight changing tack immediately. Moore aggressive, fast-stompin’…she jab-jabs a back-pedallin’ Kostek, mostly to the rack with thumping, shoulder-powered oomph, then pulling her left arm over Camille’s right shoulder, grabbing her girl inside just to annoy, use her up, stall any momentum. Camille blubbering protests when she’s locked all tight inside a stronger woman’s grasp…ref wades in late, late, late. Other scenes: Kostek getting shoved back into ropes, or walked down by the authoritative jab, as Mandy leans into SO dangerous right hands, tying up all around her blonde at her own will.

This is why the called Mandy a puppet-master back in the day…she’s sleek, but so very brutal, really bringing her weight, power forward inside these clinches…when Kostek’s allowed to step/march forward, Moore fades the pressure, walking blonde into the gap, then socks her upside the head via righty uppercuts, clipped effortlessly all the way from her hips. Takes Kostek many moments each to right herself, get back from those thundering shots down her body…usually enough time for Mandy to wrap her blonde girl up, pulling down Kostek’s right arm inside, work strong right hands into a slackening Camille’s paunch. Good, effective right hand power…heartless inside clinch control: just a wide, dominating Mandy Moore round, veteran style.

R3: Kostek trying to be aggressive, get back on top: she’s stepping into Mandy via a stiff jab stick against Mandy’s brawny uppercuts, hoping to follow up with her own right hands. Moore’s stance supple, her knees bent, licking out her jabs from the tummy while trying to take half-steps back to relieve the pressure from Camille’s thundering punch-work, the left foot sliding on canvas, moving away from Kostek’s right hand range in just the right moments. Blonde paying a price for her hawkishness: Mandy’s jab clouts her thick, right hands rub into her tummy, ribs or rack. Patterns evolve: Moore’s jabs win early exchanges and put Kostek off her stance, then brunette right hands slosh home and put Kostek a little hurt, glassy-eyed, not reading them well or too late, then Mandy’s there for the punch and clutch, wrapping up a baby-stepping Camille inside her clinches.

Moore’s being brutal in there, ringing Kostek’s jaw via inside pulverizing right hands, then walking a sullen blonde beauty around the ring, with Camille’s buttocks wobbling under the strain. Kostek stumbles around when pushed off or separated by ref, not mounting serious offenses...down the stretch: Camille leaning in righty, walks into Mandy’s own crashing right hand…head swivel, torso snapping back and forth…blonde girl’s getting saved by the bell in another wide, impressive Mandy Moore pressure round.

R4: Camille’s a banged up blonde beauty after three, the signs of devastating Mandy whacks pretty visible: lips puffy, a number of cuts, fissures across her cheeks, jaw, temple, her legs a little rigid, no longer stepping around as fast, flexible as early. Flat-footed pressure from Mandy, one-two, one-two…she’s walking Camille down, the jab thick/precise, right hands sloshing big and dangerous….Kostek forms earmuff stances at ropeside positions, trying to slide, negotiate out of Moore’s relentless pressure, her torso attacked viciously by Mandy’s ringing, rising crosses, short and thumping rights-to-bod. Off-the-ropes hook, Kostek! It breaks the momentum…Camille finally rolls nicely along with one of Mandy’s left uppercuts, short-drifting a sweet righty hook upside Mandy’s head/ear. Moore stops punchin’, forms guard…Kostek taking steps out, jabbing to Mandy’s tits, with a good thumping effect on brunette’s strong body.

Highly competitive stretches of the round ensuing mid-ring: Kostek creates ranges now, her jab suddenly alert, and more precise, as she’s walking Mandy into some stick, and eases the pressure of Mandy’s jab/grab attacks. Moore’s getting flushed to chin a couple times when leaning in with the thick jab, though she’s able to stand thru it via her leg power…Kostek’s still banged up, but so much more mobile as she’s sliding back, hooking her brunette across the torso, mostly to ribs, flanks. Different visuals: Camille learning what to do against Mandy’s untidy, overwhelming attacks, aggressively moving, stepping all around the ring and making Moore pay for her encroaching excursions. Down the stretch, Mandy adjusts, allowing more regular toe-to-toe exchanges, with many one-punch shots blasting against alert guards. All in all, round four’s a stabilizing round for Camille that might have changed the course of the fight, to a point, as she returns to the scorecards, with Mandy soul-searching the loss of her dominance.

In between rounds, in the Bonzo’s Gym corner: “Mandy hates your jab now, make her walk into it again and again – you got her now!” – at Foxfire, there’s just mild concern: “Gotta get back tummy leverage on Camille, frustrate her, bog her down…no more regular exchanges now, Mandy!”

R5: Mandy ferocious, trying to stake her physicality against smaller Kostek…Camille answering the jab and grab attacks by putting her palms on Mandy’s shoulders, as girls shunt and shift those bodies towards and from the ropes in messy, tummy-to-tummy exchanges, the ref a little overcharged by all that big-girl weight moving around. Kostek surprisingly effective throughout these trades, holding up well against Mandy’s heavier frame, leaning forward while clubbing her brunette across the neck, ears on separation via battering rights, striking first there. Mandy’s ring magic starting to look a little out of place when Camille’s right hand brings in the brutality…Kostek steps into her foe aggressively now via short, choppy right hands while Moore’s stepping backward, jabs pinging, right hands waiting. Second minute winds down: Camille’s bodying up on Mandy Moore, storming her brunette to ropes, with Mandy hugging up on her!

Kostek strong, determined here – she’s chup-chuppin’ the right forearm across the ledge of Mandy’s jugs, as Moore shouts in pain…wild-swinging righty hammering Mandy to the ribs. Brunette sitting in the ropes….and MANDY GOES DOWN! Moore trying to lean out of the damage, a battery of short, heavy left jabs leaves her right side all vulnerable, her mouth punched open in shock…and Camille shifts to the left, crushing the right hand into Mandy’s face! Tumbledown: legs fixed, torso toppling…Mandy collapses parallel to ropes, rolling groggily onto her back as the ref shoves a wide-eyed Kostek off. Stamina, will-power, you name ‘em…it gets Mandy off the deck at six, seven, but big Mandy’s not the same.

Moore trying to hold foe off via short, pumping jabs, but she’s in the ropes inevitably early in the third minute, as Kostek reaches under her arms, hoists her upright, then drives in wild, swinging haymakers into Moore’s proud breadbasket. Mandy forms crossed-arms, with Camille trying to wrestle ‘em apart, just a-hoistin’ thick-ish, uncompromising rights behind Mandy’s elbows, into her tummy. Poor Mandy’s getting rag-dolled, unable to stop the onslaught…and Camille’s feeding her right hands…one, two, three concussive wallops against Moore’s unprotected face unhinging her, skull all jolt-jerking on impact. AND THE REF STEPS IN, cradling a teary-eyed Mandy Moore into his arms as Camille jumps off, jugs-a-jumping, yelling “yes, yes, yes”…that’s a TKO5 Camille Kostek!

After: No doubt about the finish…big Mandy’s in no shape to continue fighting. Kostek suffered immensely tonight – at one point, it looked like she would stand no chance against bigger Moore’s expert ring mastership. Just like in her fight against the even more physical Antje Utgaard, Kostek was able to find the one thing you always need at welterweight: the one punch power that can turns things around.

Her second victory in a row after Krsmanovic, this opens up some opportunities for Camille, although there’s rumours swirling about a decisive match-up against stable-mate Katrina Law coming up who’s unwilling to let Camille take her place at the gym: “I respect Kat, sure, but she’s been talking about me behind my back. I really hope Bonzo’s Gym will allow us to settles these things woman against woman.” For Moore, this loss is another set-back, as an ever more successful, ever more physical Mandy’s unable to transform those things into actual ring success.
