BEFORE:
"Yeah," says Ali with a smile, "It's been a few years. But. Boxing's like riding a bike. Once you learn how, you never forget."
"Oh, I have no doubt she still remembers how to do this," says Serinda. "And, I have no doubt she can still do it pretty well. Thing is, she can't do it as well as me. Because, she never could."
ROUND ONE:
O'Dell: "Back at ringside, and that's 'She's Kinda Hot' by 5 Seconds of Summer, and here comes the star of 'Final Destination' Ali Larter!"
McCarthy: "You know, about twice a year, Weirdo actually brings a GOOD fighter in here, and Larter is one of those. This girl is a three-time champion and she's top shelf, and I don't care HOW old she is. Nothin'. But. A. Number!"
O'Dell: "Ali getting a great response from the crowd as she comes down the aisle and into the ring. She's helped off with the robe to reveal a yellow bikini and a body that looks nowhere NEAR 42 years old. And, that's 'Foxey Lady' by Jimi Hendrix you hear pounding through the arena, and here comes 'The Hottest Player In The Game', Serinda Swan!"
Tess: "And, with all the changes going on among the bigs at Front Street, no question Serinda wants to come out and get a 'W' tonight..."
O'Dell: "Swan all business as she comes down the aisle and climbs into the ring. She's helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve to reveal that red bikini we've seen before and the fans clearly like. And, we're about ready to go. Time for some picks. Tess likes Serinda. Mac?"
McCarthy: "Larter's a REAL fighter. She'll beat this Dancing Hooker!"
O'Dell: "Cassie?"
Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"
O'Dell: "Another split panel. And, again, we'll see who's right. Ladies going to set up at range early. No surprise, as both blonde and brunette are good boxers. Larter finding with the jab, quickly following on with right hands. Ali getting into a nice rhythm pretty quickly here, tossing the brunette to the defensive."
Tess: "Looked like Swan wanted to do some recon, but Larter's got different ideas."
O'Dell: "No doubt about it. She's after it within the first minute of the fight, and, she's getting on a roll. And, when you watch her putting punches together like this, you know why she's a three-time lightweight champion. She's a slick and skilled as it gets, and she's using all of that on Serinda at the moment."
Cassie: "Swan playing counter puncher right now, but it's out of necessity, not desire."
O'Dell: "And, while she's scoring some points that way, she's not coming close to keeping up with what the blonde's doing. Instead, Larter's in control of this thing, dictating pace, distance, and geometry and building up a very big lead in this stanza. Five seconds to go. One more flurry from the blonde and there's the bell. Larter. Wide."
McCarthy: "And, Ali's got the 10-9 lead."
ROUND TWO:
O'Dell: "Swan stepping to to start the second. Serinda wants to get physical after Ali had the better part of the boxing in the first. Brunette banging body and head, crowding the blonde. Ali firing back in kind, landing some hard shot of her own. Looks like Larter's plenty comfortable on these terms, Mac..."
McCarthy: "Not surprised. Again, this is a girl who's held the belts three times. She can fight effectively a lot of different ways."
O'Dell: "Phone booth stuff right now. Lots of body work, but plenty of work upstairs as well. Hooks and uppercuts the punches of the day for the moment, as both ladies are looking to land hard shot in close quarters. Fighters fall into a clinch. Referee breaks them, but Swan right back in Larter's grill."
Cassie: "I think, in the short term, Ali can bang with Serinda like this, but, as the fight goes on, Swan's stronger and a harder hitter."
O'Dell: "And, that could well play. For the moment, though, it's a very close round as we roll down the stretch. Neither fighter able to gain any real advantage. Good right hook, Swan. Larter ties up. Referee steps in to break them, Exchange at range and there's the bell. Serinda's round close."
Tess: "And, we're even at 19."
ROUND THREE:
O'Dell: "Third begins with Larter using the jab and the feet to create space. Ali not going to fight on Swan's terms again if she can help it. Serinda still working forward, angling, and GETTING DROPPED! A BEAUTIFUL right hand from Larter catches Swan clean and the brunette is dropped to her back!"
McCarthy: "I TOLD you! This girl is a champion. She can beat a Dancing Hooker ANY day!"
O'Dell: "Ali to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Swan rolling to her belly. Pushing to hands and knees at six. Seven. Eight. Serinda to her feet. Referee going to give her the mandatory and then waive on Ali. Larter going to WORK now with both hands, buffeting the brunette around the ring..."
Tess: "Referee watching this very, very closely."
O'Dell: "He is, indeed. Swan firing back here and there, but mostly taking. She's backed to the ropes with twenty seconds to go. Larter just WINGING away now, looking to finish this thing. Brunette hanging on. Referee looking in. Five seconds to go. There's the bell. Swan survives, but it's 10-8 for the blonde, who's now in control."
Cassie: "And up 29-27 on the cards."
ROUND FOUR:
O'Dell: "Fourth begins with Larter cleaning up on Swan. Blonde looking to finish the brunette, who's still plenty wobbly. Serinda giving ground, jabbing back here and there, working to stay off the ropes as Larter looks to drive her there. Former champ all business now, ladies, putting together a clinical clean up."
Cassie: "All the while looking to finish this thing, and, she might not need a knockout to do it."
O'Dell: "Not the way she's dominating the round. Brunette backed to the ropes now. Larter getting off punches in bunches. Swan firing back with a nice combination of her own, but then suppressed by heavy fire from the former champion. Ali digging a little body, since the brunette is in a high guard..."
Tess: "Another quick combination from Swan. She's going to make sure the ref doesn't stop it if she can."
O'Dell: "And, as we head down the stretch the blonde all about either making him do that or putting Swan on the canvas. Larter banging away with everything in the arsenal. Ten seconds to go. No question it's going to be Ali and by a wide margin, but Swan's still standing at the bell."
McCarthy: "But, Larter's now up 39-36."
ROUND FIVE:
O'Dell: "Larter back to work in the fifth. Blonde may be over 40, but she's still got plenty of stamina, no doubt. She's put in a TON of work over these last couple of rounds, and she's not slowing down at ALL. Instead, she's continuing to fight lead here, continuing to throw accurate combinations at Swan..."
Cassie: "RIGHT HAND, SERINDA!"
O'Dell: "And Larter is HURT! Ali stumbling after a NASTY right-hand counter from the brunette and DOWN GOES LARTER! Short right hook sends the blonde crashing to her right side! Serinda quickly to a neutral corner as the referee begins his count. Three. Four. Five. Larter to all fours at six. Seven. And the blonde to her feet at eight..."
McCarthy: "All she needs to do is get out of this round and she'll still be ahead."
O'Dell: "Referee gives the blonde the mandatory and waives on Swan. Serinda now a woman on a mission. She's letting the blonde have it with both barrels, driving her into the ropes, working her over with heavy leather. Larter defending well, countering in spots, in no danger from the referee. Ten seconds to go. GOOD right hand from Swan shook Ali, but there's the bell."
Tess: "And, as Mac points out, despite the 10-8 round, Larter's still up 47-46."
ROUND SIX:
O'Dell: "Second half begins with Swan on the attack. She's stepping to Larter and getting physical with the blonde. She's banging away to both head and body, backing up the older woman with heavy fire. Ali trying to hold canvas, banging back in spots, slowing the brunette's advance, but not stopping it."
Tess: "Again, sound defense from Larter, slipping punches, blocking, catching some with the shoulders."
O'Dell: "Experienced veteran who's definitely not easy to hit. Swan digging some body now. Larter ties up. Referee breaks. Ali moving a little better, circles away. Serinda steps to, BANGS a left hook to the body and DROPS ALI WITH A RIGHT HOOK TO THE CHIN! Swan quickly to a neutral corner..."
Cassie: "That one was pretty close to on the button...Serinda might not need to hurry."
O'Dell: "Ali flat on her back, eyes closed. Referee's count at three. Four. Five. Six. Larter sitting up at seven. Trying to get to her feet. Eight. Nine. Not going to be able to do it. TEN! It's OVER! Larter unable to beat the count and it's OVER! And your winner by KO6 is 'The Hottest Player In The Game', Serinda Swan!"
McCarthy: "She got LUCKY!"
AFTER:
O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"
Tess: "I have our winner, Serinda Swan, and, Swanny, that was a heck of a fight..."
Serinda (nodding): "Knew it would be. Girl like her, multiple champion. She's going to give you a test. I knew I'd pass it, but, blondie over there doesn't grade on a curve."
O'Dell: "Lots of movement with the Front Street bigs lately and rumors of a new signing. How's that affect you?"
Serinda: "Not at ALL. I just keep working, keep getting results, and let everything else take care of itself." |
