Intro: The next bout tonight in Madison Square Garden sees two women looking to start rebuilding their careers with the turn of the year coming up, Bridget Regan meets Gemma Atkinson for the second time in their career.
Bridget is 36 years old; she stands 5'8 and holds a record of 25 wins, 22 by knockout, 16 defeats with 1 draw, she is a former 3 time FCBA welterweight champion.
Gemma is 34 years old; she stands 5'9 and holds a record of 20 wins, 18 by knockout with 26 defeats, she is a former FCBA welterweight champion.
These two fought in a welterweight title fight in 2017, Gemma would go on to defend her title against Bridget with a seventh round knockout.
So as Bridget speaks to the press outside her gym as she is about to go in, it is understandable that she looks annoyed to be asked about wanting revenge.
After taking a breath; Bridget answers "this isn't revenge for me, Gemma earned that win but this a fight where both me and Gemma are desperate"
As the press looks surprised, she continues "this is the worse run of my career and I need to be honest with myself, I can't hide behind me being part of the great R and R rivalry with Righetti, I need to get in the gym and rebuild from square one if I want to match the elite now"
When asked about if she can get back to that elite level, Bridget smiles and replies "I wouldn't be here today if I didn't think so, the day I don't think I can be part of the elite then I'd stop coming and would retire"
Gemma meanwhile talked to the press in her manager Victoria Beckham's office, smiling as she tells them she is happy to see them.
Not so much when she is asked about her form, she replies "I'd love to say that I can give you a definitive answer why I can't buy a win, I am training as hard as ever, I mean look at me" rolling up her sleeve to flex her right arm, before showing off her abs.
"I'm still the fittest welterweight no matter what Wiz says about Utgaard or Righetti claims, I just need to believe that I can win and I shall get on a run again to be the best" says a clearly confident Gemma.
Who when asked about next years plan answers "to be the best again... I am going to be the champion again" nodding to the journalists as she stands up and Victoria waves them out the room.
Fight night and Bridget comes out with Angie Everhart by her side, Bridget throws a few punches at the top of the aisle to show off her hand speed before she begins her march to the ring.
She is wearing a black sports bra with white trim, matching trunks, white gloves with black thumbs and black shoes, her brunette hair is in a ponytail.
Climbing into the ring; Bridget steps to the center of the ring and waves to each side of the ring, then heads to her corner with Angie drilling her on what the game plan is.
Gemma heads out next with Victoria by her side, Gemma has an all business look as she jogs down the aisle towards the ring.
She is wearing a white sports bra with a red rose on the left bra cup, white trunks and shoes, with red gloves, her blonde hair is also in a ponytail.
Getting into the ring; Gemma gives the crowd a quick wave but is back to looking focused as she gets to her corner and limbers up.
As the fighters come to the ring center; while they are keeping limber by shaking their limbs, their eyes are locked in an intense stare down.
When they are ordered to touch gloves, they do respectfully touch them up before they head back to their corners, ready to start 10 rounds of welterweight action.
Round 1: The fight starts off with a feeling out process, neither brimming with confidence maybe having an effect or it might be down to respect why they are testing the other out. Gemma looks to push the tempo first; stepping forwards with a three punch combo straight into the gloves of Bridget, who moves back and finds herself being hounded. The Blonde fighter tries to swing a hook around the guard, she misses though as Bridget dips under it and bumps back Atkinson with her left, then comes up with an overhand right. Now it's Bridget on the front foot, landing crisp punches to the body and up top when an opening presents itself, allowing her to take the center of the ring. A missed right off Bridget though allows Gemma to come back at her, both women end up slugging it out as they are desperate to get momentum from the off in this fight. The fighters end up clinched and grappling with each other, the round ends with the referee needing to pry them apart so they can head back to their corners, a frustrated look on their faces after a tough round to score. Round 2: It looks a more measured opening after the fireworks in the final moments of the last round, with Bridget starting the stronger with her straight punches and head movement causing Gemma trouble. Till Bridget looks to move in close; GEMMA SIDESTEPS HER AND LANDS A LEFT TO THE FACE OF BRIDGET, FOLLOWED BY A RIGHT ACROSS THE JAW OF REGAN TO PUT HER DOWN ON THE CANVAS! The Bazz corner team looks stunned as they see Bridget down, Gemma smiles as she gets to a neutral corner, 1...2...3 Bridget shakes her head, rubbing her jaw as 4...5...6 she begins to move up off the canvas, 7... Beating it and looking as much pissed at herself as her opponent. The fight continues with Gemma looking for the kill, Bridget having to retreat and use her defensive skills to try to dodge punches. Bridget ends up holding Gemma after taking a left across her cheek, the Brit is frustrated as Bridget is stopping her momentum. They are separated and Gemma continues to stalk Bridget, her efforts though are mostly fruitless as Regan is clearly not as badly hurt as she hoped. The bell rings with Gemma nodding over to Victoria, both probably hoping this isn't a wasted chance as she sits on her stool and stares out at Bridget. Who slaps the turnbuckle in frustration herself as she sits down, Angie telling her to calm down and focus on getting the fight back in her control. Round 3: Gemma comes on the hunt from the bell; throwing more measuring punches aimed at the head of her opponent. The Brit manages to land a jab between the mitts of Regan, then lands two cross punches to push her opponent onto the back foot. But as she looks to push on; Gemma misses with a left hook as Bridget slips under it and comes up with an uppercut that knocks Atkinson back. It's Bridget starting to control the action as she works the body of Gemma, backing her to the outside of the ring. Gemma manages to force Bridget back to the outside with a straight to the nose of the American, followed by a left across her cheek. With Gemma driving Bridget back across the ring with three punches knocking the head back, sweat flies off the head of Regan. The round ends with Gemma looking a little more relaxed, getting a smile from Victoria as she sits down on her stool and gets washed down. In the Bazz corner it is a bit more tense, Bridget nodding as Angie goes through what she needs to do more, she bumps fists with Angie as she stands up. Round 4: Gemma again takes the center of the ring, jabbing at the head of Bridget, who is moving around the outside of the ring with her head moving around more. As Atkinson misses with a left cross because of Bridget sidestepping her, it leaves Gemma open to a right to the side of her head. Bridget is now focusing on counter punching, allowing her to catch out Gemma more with straight punches drilling into the cheek of the Brit. As Gemma looks to be getting annoyed due to her not landing as cleanly, she tries to swing a right hook that misses and leaves her open to an overhand right across the top of her head. Gemma stumbles a step to the side; Bridget goes on the attack with four punches slamming into the face of the blonde to knock her back. It leads to Atkinson pulling Regan into a clinch, with a trickle of blood coming from her nose, the referee steps in as both women try to pin the other to the ropes. Once apart Gemma again looks to get into the face of Bridget, who simply dips under a straight and drills a straight into the abs, followed by an overhand left to the side of Atkinson's head. The bell rings with Gemma looking over at Victoria with a confused look, Victoria telling her that she needs to slow down and focus on landing instead of this swinging for the fences she is going for. While Bridget looks happier but clearly knows she needs to keep on top of this fight, Gemma has already proven she can stop her so she can't let up. Round 5: The fighters both start off the way they did earlier, trading stiff jabs off the others cheeks as they look for an opening to work from. It soon appears as Gemma misses with a straight and gets caught across her nose with a right, making her cry out as more blood flows. Bridget flows up with two more strikes to that bloody nose; SHE LANDS A RIGHT ACROSS THE CHIN OF GEMMA TO ROCK HER, A FOLLOW UP HOOK PUTS GEMMA DOWN TO HER SIDE! Blood drips from the nose of Gemma as she looks glassy eyed, 1...2...3 Bridget stares down at Gemma and looks ready to charge her, 4....5....6 Gemma manages to turn to all fours, 7...8...9...10 but she hasn't the strength to get up and is counted out!
Winner Bridget Regan KO Round 5
After: Bridget gets the big win; it shows as raises her fists into the air and let's out a bellow of joy, Angie gives her a thumbs up in the corner to show how much she enjoyed the ending.
Gemma meanwhile has Victoria over to her, helping her stand up and over to her corner so that nose can be fixed up as tears can be seen running down the face of the beaten fighter.
Both women get cleaned up by their corners, with the Bazz corner buzzing as Angie and Bridget talk about the fight, with Bridget jokingly wiping her brow as she admits "she had me worried in round 2"
That won't give Gemma much to smile about, she has her head down and a towel covering it as she hides her expression, hiding the tears dripping off her face as this was supposed to be the fight that would set things right.
Instead she stays in her corner as Bridget heads to the ring center, Gemma not looking up as Bridget's hand is raised and her name is announced as the winner.
Gemma tosses the towel off and storms out the ring, looking like she wants to tear someone or something apart to release her rage.
Bridget shrugs her shoulders as she watches Gemma go, just wanting to celebrate with Angie and the fans as she goes for a lap of honour inside the ring.
Once she finishes up, then she leaves the ring with her waving to the fans on the way to the back, the biggest smile she has had in a long time after a fight.
It'll be interesting to see what next year holds for both women, Bridget has something to work from compared to Gemma, can she use this result to head back towards the welterweight title? |
